The (American) War on Drugs is used as the backdrop of a lot of different stories. From the streets of Baltimore in The Wire, to the violence in Mexico depicted in Sicario and Traffic and games involving both sides of the law. This thread is for people's opinions on it, personal experiences or anything else involving the war on drugs.

Note: when I say: American War on Drugs, it is the United States and Mexican Governments fighting the cartel or other groups who manufacture or sell narcotics.

Rewatching a lot of The Wire lately. The series remains extremely timely. In many ways, unfortunately, I feel it's timeless. It still says a lot about the modern state of policing and the war on drugs, none of it good.

I think the war on drugs is incredibly crappy and should be abolished immediately.

I mean throwing someone in jail for what they put into their bodies is just wrong plus the violent black market and other consequential crap is just dysfunctional.

That mindset’s gonna be hard to use on like in Singapore. Marijuana’s illegal to use there and having some amount with you means harsh jail sentences, including death.

[up] All the more reason to think it's crappy and should be scrapped.

Good luck with that — pretty much all of Asia is in agreement on heavy punishment for drug possession because of how damaging the Opium Wars were to China in the 19th Century. It's probably the only thing you will get ready agreement among all countries.

Seems to me like people are mixing up US and Asian experiences with "wars on drugs", anyway.

I have always wondered if the Asian continent's legal perspective of drugs may be a bit colored by its take on traditional medicine from the region.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes
