So, I'll be the first to admit that I am a huge fan of the classic role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, especially the older versions of the game published by TSR. That being said, I also like 3.5/Pathfinder and 5E as well.

I want to start a forum-based D&D campaign in the vein of old-school D&D as it existed back in The '70s when the game first came out. As such, I intend to use the original rules released back in 1974, also known as OD&D or Zero Edition.

Specifically, we will be using the core "White Box" rules exclusively at first, and as the game attracts more players and grows in scope, I will incrementally add more materials from the four main supplements to the campaign, such as the additional classes, races, and spells.

I own the core rules and all four supplements for OD&D on PDF, and they are available for sale on Drive Thru RPG.

BUT if you are strapped for cash, you can also use the open-license game Full Metal Plate Mail as a substitute for the core rules, as it is an open-license retro-clone that can be legally downloaded for free and is very faithful to the original boxed set's mechanics.

The game itself is a Wide-Open Sandbox campaign set in the "Implied Setting" derived from the core rules and the map from Avalon Hill's Outdoor Survival

More about the OD&D Implied Setting can be read in this excellent fan-made document linked below.

For dice rolls, we will be using an online dice roller, linked below.

The game itself is very much rooted in the wild and open-ended weirdness endemic to early D&D.

It's more about rulings rather than hard rules and the game is more subject to Rule Zero and DM decisions.

The following materials are currently in play at the moment

  • Dungeons & Dragons (1974)
    • Volume I: Men & Magic
    • Volume II: Monsters & Treasure
    • Volume III: The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures

These materials will be added later as the campaign expands and progresses. Remember, the signups are always open and I am always looking for new players. The more, the merrier!

  • Supplement I: Greyhawk (1975)
  • Supplement II: Blackmoor (1975)
  • Supplement III: Eldritch Wizardry (1976)
  • Supplement IV: Gods, Demigods, & Heroes (1976)

All players start out at Level 1, and the following races and classes are in play.

  • Races
    • Human
    • Dwarf
    • Elf
    • Halfling
  • Classes
    • Fighter
    • Magic-User
    • Cleric

Humans can be any class up to any level.

Dwarves can only be Fighters up to Level 6.

Elves can be Fighters up to Level 4 or Magic-Users up to Level 8.

Halflings can only be Fighters up to Level 4.

This may seem restrictive at first, but more options will be added as we include more supplements, as well any any Rule Zero-based exceptions for non-traditional PC's.

As a Game Master, I can and will make exceptions to the current rules.

Non-traditional player characters were very common back in the old days, and the core rules even provide a brief example of a Dragon PC.

In the example mentioned, a Level 1 Dragon being a baby dragon that would grow stronger and larger as they leveled up.

I can make similar exceptions for PC's that fall outside the current lineup of races and classes if you PM me the concept ahead of time for approval.

And now, here's the standard character sheet.

Ability Scores are determined by rolling three six-sided dice for each ability.
