Do you have to have read the book to summon characters from it?
Creator of Heroes of Thantopolis: http://heroesofthantopolis.com/Let me raise a few points regarding your idea:
- What is considered literature? Does it mean classical literature such as Moby-Dick, The War of the Worlds and etcetera? Or does it extend to modern fiction like speculative fiction, thrillers, crime, romance, and horror? What is the line between fiction and non-fiction? Let's not get into religious books and fanfiction.
- What is the limits of their own power? You can't risk apocalypses if you bring out Lovecraftian horrors, extraterrestrial invasions and other things.
- Does a comic book considered literature? Such as Watchmen, Maus and other things.
- Are they even sentient?
Well, this is the non-exhaustive list. Anyone wants to add on?
Up in Useful Notes/ParaguayPublic Domain Stuff would be the emphasis, and it can also include books from the modern era as well.
Also that is why I am having it be that a summoner can only have one summon.
Also the summons have to do whatever their summoners tell them to. However, the summons can be vanquished if you burn their their book.

The idea looks very good. Monkey King anyone?
If there's a book you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. Toni MorrisonOne thing I love about the premise is the opportunities for Cool vs. Awesome scenarios.
Also I think Reynard the Fox should totally be in there as well.
I think with the many different characters from literature, the setting would so be a Fantasy Kitchen Sink.

I was thinking of this premise of a mon series but you summon characters from different literature like Of Treasure Island, Moby Dick, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Odyssey, Alice In Wonderland, etc.
