It's the 1970s, and crime and corruption rates in Hong Kong have skyrocketed. This is not the only problem plaguing the city, however, as great amounts of ancient magic has begun to seep back into the world. Ghosts, demons, and other strange creatures have all been spotted in the city, looking to use the situation for their own ends.

Unscrupulous individuals are already hard at work trying to take advantage of the sudden reappearance of the old magics. Central to their schemes are locations with a good Feng Shui resonance. By taking these locations for their own, they will be able to gather good fortune and cement their power.

Opposing these villains are the citizens of Hong Kong, whether they be honest cops, newly-awakened mystics, children eager to solve mysteries and get in over their heads, scientists studying strange phenomenon, or average people. Whether they know of the high stakes or not, they have chosen to protect the Feng Shui sites.

Basically, this is an RP inspired by the Tabletop RPG Feng Shui and, of course, Hong Kong action movies. It will be mostly freeform, so people can make up their own plots, but will have one overarching conflict throughout.

    Rules
  • All TV Tropes forum and RP rules apply here.
  • No Godmodding of any kind (Ghosting, Autohitting, Powergaming, etc).
  • Please maintain a civil atmosphere at all times. (Don't start drama, etc.)
  • Power levels are pretty flexible, since I feel the "No Godmodding" rule gives everyone a fighting chance.
  • One character only, unless you're going to start a plot and need more characters.
    • Make them if and when you can handle them.

If you're interested in joining this RP, great! Simply pick one of the factions below to base your character on. Don't worry, you can change it later when we start playing. (But, be warned, as changing back to your original faction may not be possible.)

    Factions
  • Concerned Citizen: These are the ordinary citizens of Hong Kong who got pulled into the conflict, but are still out to do the right thing. They may be reporters out to tell the truth, cops out to stop corruption, vigilantes, etc. [HEROIC FACTION]
  • Mystic: This is a person who, through abilities that got passed down through the generations or something else got the ability to see and communicate with ghosts and spirits, as well as perform magic. Some have had a lot of experience with the whole business, while others have only just learned of their latent power. Previously, they were seen as superstitious, but the sudden reappearance of magic has proved this wrong. [HEROIC/VILLAINOUS/NEUTRAL FACTION]
  • Unscrupulous Individual: These are the people who seek to take over the Feng Shui sites and gain power from them. From corrupt police to Triad members to power-hungry officials, these people are real pieces of work. [VILLAINOUS FACTION]
  • Supernatural Creature: These are the ghosts and whatnot that have reappeared following the resurfacing of magic. They work towards their own goals, whether it be to fulfill a dying wish, gain more power, or play pranks on unsuspecting people. [HEROIC/VILLAINOUS/NEUTRAL FACTION]

Once you've picked a faction, fill out the character sheet below and I will approve you as soon as possible.

    Character Sheet
  • Name: (What their name is)
    • Faction: (What faction they belong to)

  • Abilities:
    • Powers: (what your character's powers are, if they have any)
    • Weaknesses: (What your character's weak points are)
    • Skills: (What skills your character has)

  • Name: Matsuki Kyonori
  • Faction: Concerned Citizen(?)
  • Abilities: Matsuki seems to have higher than normal physical abilities, being harder to damage, hits abnormally hard, heals faster than most humans, and is resistant to most magical effects. This can be chalked up to his heritage, not that he was aware of it.
  • Powers: He could potentially develop into powers in the same vein as his father, but he's quite averse to that.
  • Weaknesses: While he is enhanced in a number of ways, he lacks any sort of outright explicit powers beyond that.
  • Skills: Trained policeman, driver, capable at detecting the influence of the mystical (though not through his own choice).
  • Equipment: Handgun, taser, and miscellaneous equipment.
  • Appearance: Matsuki is a young man of Eurasian looks - bushy smooth black hair on his head and slight Pretty Boy looks, he has light blue eyes and a somewhat pale countenance. He has a muscular build, at around 205 lbs, and stands at about six foot one. He mostly wears his police uniform, replete with a badge. He wears a necklace around his neck with a picture inside showing his mother and the crossed out image of his father. When he is near the supernatural, his left hand shows a strange blue phoenix tattoo, which burns and severely aggravates him.
  • Personality: Matsuki is a definite case of someone who is more good than lawful, most often choosing to do what is right over what the rules are. This gets him a decidedly "maverick" reputation in the police. While he cannot be bribed, he is entirely morally inflexible. If someone commits a murder, they must be dragged in to face justice - or in more extreme cases, be met by lethal force. He is harsh on the job, but is significantly more lighthearted outside of it. Matsuki has a troubled relationship with his family - he loves his mother, who is severely mentally troubled (requiring several kinds of medicine), and despises his absent father. "The question isn't what my father did - it's what didn't he do." Making the whole issue more complicated is that Matsuki looks exactly like his father, almost like a twin. This severely impacts his view of himself, and he engages in strenuous exercise to basically work through the problems in his head.
  • Background: A son of a family that moved to Hong Kong from Japan to escape "political scandal", Matsuki was the much put upon older son - it seemed he was the only one willing or able to defend his mother. His father was basically a monster, and the first thing Matsuki learned of him was that his father also occupied other "roles" in the family. And that he was the product of an entirely disgusting "breeding program" his father instigated. However following an incident, the infamous patriarch Matsuno Kyonori abandoned the family and ran off, supposedly due to old enemies. Matsuki grew up and joined the police force, so as to eventually bring his father to justice.

That Friend Nobody Likes
#7: Jul 10th 2018 at 8:21:40 PM

  • Name: Matt Smith
  • Faction: Himself.
  • Abilities:
    • Powers: Matt has a book filled with occult rituals. They can do practically anything, but it has limitations. We'll get into those under weaknesses.
    • Weaknesses: The book seems to have a mind of its own. He can only open it to the pages it wants to show him. Also, it's written in a bizarre pidgin of German, Chinese, and Irish Gaelic that is almost impossible to decipher.
  • Skills: Matt is an extremely skilled swordsman and metalworker. He's also the only person who can understand the language his occult book is written in, though he's hardly fluent. He also speaks English, German, and Russian with fluency.
  • Equipment: Just the book, a short sword, and some money.
  • Appearance: Matt is pretty much The Nondescript. Average height, average weight, average eyes, average hair. He looks about twenty.
  • Personality: Matt is extremely introverted. Dealing with people is not his strong suit. He loves books, and will get really pissed if someone tries to talk to him while he's reading. He is otherwise slow to anger and not easily scared. He rarely expresses any emotion at all, to be honest.
  • Background: Matt was a college kid in the United States when he found a mysterious book in the library. His family life and college life were actually rather boring before that point. He opened it and discovered the bizarre pidgin language it was written in. He immediately became obsessed with it, and spent months with very little sleep attempting to decipher it. He eventually did, but his obsession only grew when he discovered the book's true mysteries. He became increasingly isolated, and seemed to forget how to interact with other humans. His college expelled him. He eventually attempted a ritual in it, one that granted skill. Unfortunately, he did not have anything in mind when asking for "skill", so the spell had to improvise. The only thing it could find was a nearby fantasy novel, so it took the protagonist's prodigious skill with the sword and metalworking and gave it to Matt. His nondescriptness was the result of him botching another ritual before he got the hang of the whole "occult rituals" thing, and totally not the result of lazy writing. Matt... does not know why he's in Hong Kong. He is almost utterly unfamiliar with Chinese culture and would rather be someplace where he knew the language like Britain, Canada, Australia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or even the Soviet Union, but the book seems to want him to go here for whatever reason, and who is he to object...

  • Name: Yu Fong
  • Faction: Concerned Citizen
  • Abilities:
    • Powers: Due to a combination of good luck, well-placed shots, and a little latent magic, guns in his hands are way more effective than normal—they will always at least chip away at anything he hits, regardless of any supernatural defenses.
    • Weaknesses: Yu's tied up with the cops. Institutional politics will always screw him over if someone can get leverage there, and he's had to hand in his gun and his badge more than once. He has some leeway as the head of the Paranormal Task Force in the RHKPF, but never enough.
    • Skills:
      • Yu's a damn good guy to have in a fight. He's practiced shooting akimbo for years and he can bullseye a crow's wings from across the street with a pistol, even while diving through the air in slow motion. Hand-to-hand his bulk never gets in the way; his martial arts training as a cop comes fully to bear.
      • Fong knows his way around the RHKPF. He doesn't know how to wrangle a bureaucracy too well, but he knows someone in every department and he also knows how to act around cops and how to do everything not associated with butchering criminals too—due process, laws and detective procedure and all that boring shit that he can be functional but not super exceptional at.
    • Equipment:
      • Fong generally does stick to a normal Royal Hong Kong Police Force officer's gear—a flashlight, a taser, mace, cuffs, and of note a Colt Detective Special revolver since he's technically on an investigative task force.
      • Fong "runs" the Paranormal Task Force in the RHKPF. His only actual subordinates don't actually work exclusively for him, though, and he is the Task Force's only actual field agent. For now he only has a pair of clerks, Feng and Will, who can look shit up for him or fill out requisition forms if he shoots them a page and also if they aren't busy at the time. His reputation has gotten the PTF a lot more respect than most task forces of their type, and he's willing to use that pull. The PTF has a normal Task Force's budget but only a single person's manpower, so Officer Yu's loadouts can get kind of wild when he has prep time.
  • Appearance: Officer Yu's a bigger guy. He's paunchy and pudgy, but he keeps himself super tidy. He is 5'9.
  • Personality: Fong is uncomfortably intense sometimes; he believes a tough question can generally throw someone off-balance and give him an edge if it's Real enough. His parents' house was never very well-kept, and it was like the only thing that he sees as a black mark on their legacy, so he keeps his shit super clean and neat, always. A side effect to this is that he can't let a case just sit, and he will of course go off the clock to track down whatever leads he needs. Despite any gunfights in teahouses he may or may not have had, Officer Yu always believes in keeping the law—he thinks that preserving a peaceful state for the most people possible is the ultimate goal of the Force; if the trains run on time, the babies don't starve, basically. He's a very earnest person willing to self-reflect on things and think about clues, which was what led him to bite the bullet on the PTF—he was willing to buy into the supernatural, and at the end of the day believes that everyone wants to believe in it.
  • Background: Yu Fong, like a lot of cops, was also raised by cops. Mom and Dad were both huge badasses on the Force, and he saw their example from a young age. He grew up believing that he had a good life with a lot of comfort and security and good education because of them, and he felt like he had to give back. It started at community service and sometimes beating the shit out of bullies or whatever, but it did eventually escalate. In time, Fong became a humble hero of the Royal Hong Kong Police Force. He has solved numerous cases, but has, up till recently, tried to keep a low profile, regardless of the nature of the operations he's participated in. Up till recently he was content knowing he'd gunned his way through loads of gangsters and drug dealers all over the city, assisting in the neverending crackdown on crime in the city. When shit started getting real in the city recently however, and the masquerade first dropped for the Police Force, it was looking like some poor rookie or some guy already in the barrel with the Force was going to get assigned to the covert Paranormal Task Force. Fong took it as a very real thing though, and volunteered himself to make sure no poor saps got involved.

Is this set in the 1970s? If that's the case, the HKPF will still be Royal Hong Kong Police Force and the P250 wouldn't be adopted until the early to mid 2000s. They'd still use revolvers except if you're working with units like the Special Duties Unit or the Airport Security Unit.

  • Name: Ying Wu
    • Faction: Concerned Citizen

  • Abilities:
    • Powers:
      • Due to an extremely diluted mystic bloodline, Ying gets "the willies" when in the presence of supernatural beings. The stronger the supernatural being, the stronger the feeling.
    • Weaknesses:
      • Ying is just a regular human being that happens to have a haunted pipa. It's her only mode of offense and defense, since she has no idea how to fight.
    • Skills:
      • Ying is very skilled at playing the pipa, and her skill is further enhanced by the supernatural properties of her pipa.
      • She can also cook pretty well, having been taught by her parents. She gained a sense of how to work calmly under pressure from this.
    • Equipment:
      • Her pipa was willed to her by her great-grandfather, who passed away soon after. It never seems to get out-of-tune and has a great sound. In a letter that was included in the will, Ying's great-grandfather explained to her about how he felt weak lately and how it was up to her to protect the Feng Shui sites (which included the restaurant her family owns) from the people who would exploit them. The letter also explained that he would try to haunt the pipa to give her some extra help.
      • The pipa can incite extreme emotions when played. This can be used to calm ghosts and help them pass on. In addition, playing it in a certain way can summon the spirit of Ying's great-grandfather for help and advice. He appears as a young and spry guy to those that can see spirits.

  • Appearance: Ying is a young woman in her mid-20s with waist-length black hair and brown eyes. She wears a white collared shirt, a dark red ankle-length pleated skirt, and simple straw sandals.

  • Personality: Because of her upbringing, Ying is simple and straightforward. She believes in helping others whenever possible, and is worried that someone might try to take her family's restaurant by force. When things get really dicey, she has the potential to become bolder and more daring.

  • Background:
    • Ying was born into a middle-class family and grew up in relative peace and safety. Everything seemed perfect, except that her great-grandfather always seemed a bit senile.
    • Eventually, she started playing the pipa, and, with her parent's permission, entertained customers instead of helping out in the kitchen.
    • Then, she was willed her great-grandfather's pipa, he died, and everything seemed to blow up from there. She hopes this situation will blow over soon, but peace and safety in this age might not be possible anymore...

@Taco

- Yeah. I immediately figured it out. Never mind that I lived in Hong Kong from the 80s to the 90s that I saw that mistake.

And one more things, tasers weren't used by the RHKPF (Now HKPF) until IIRC the early to mid 2000/2010s.

Well, it goes two ways.

You can't hurt people unless the players write that you hurt them.

The no autohitting rule balances things out between everyone.

So I guess it's more or less even...?

And also, look at the other characters: My character has an invisible pipa-powered Stand, and have you seen Nick's character? I bet your character will fit right in on the scale of strange things in this world.

Just make it really obvious in-game that the crow is important in some way and I'll allow it.

Oh snap, you had me at faction based conflict and Hong Kong action movies.

  • Name: Victor 'Vic' Huang
  • Faction: Concerned Citizen (More of a neutral good sort of deal)
  • Abilities:
    • Powers: N/A
    • Weaknesses: Heavy alcohol reliance (though a weak tolerance), doesn't have a lot of money and overall is looked down upon by most people in the police force.
    • Skills: Victor is a master of the drunken fist, which, for most people is a martial art performed sober that imitates the staggered movements of a drunkard. For Victor, it's more of a literal interpretation of the art, requiring him to get well and truly smashed to make use of the style effectively. When sober, Victor can hold his own in a fight, but won't last terribly long. Victor is also trilingual, being able to speak Cantonese, Mandarin and English (OOC note: I only speak one of these languages). Additionally, due to his brief stint as a cop, Victor's got a knack for investigative work, which is quite helpful in his chosen field (Private detective).
  • Equipment: A crappy one room apartment that doubles as his office, the sign on the door reads "Victor Huang; PD" in Mandarin, Cantonese and English. Victor also owns a beat up car that fails to start up half the time, and about 30 bottles of Jack Daniel's at any given time, the contents of at least one are kept in an oversized hip flask on Victor's person at all times.
  • Appearance: His suit is usually dirtier than this
  • Personality: While his actions may not always reflect it, Victor's intentions are generally noble and he tries his damnedest to help out the citizens of Hong Kong in any way he can. Though his biggest weakness tends to be a general lack of motivation (which is to say, despite all the rampant corruption in the city, Victor doesn't feel like he can do much by himself), once he's put on a case, Victor will stop at nothing to ensure it's completed and that whoever hired him gets the answers they were looking for.
  • Background: The son of two immigrants who moved to Canada in the 50s, Victor decided to move back to Hong Kong in his 20s in an attempt to join the police force and in the hopes that he'd fit in slightly better than he did in the great white north. At first, everything went pretty smoothly for Victor, despite still being something of an outsider in Hong Kong he managed to just barely make it into the force after scraping through police academy. And, for a while, everything seemed to be going smoothly, Victor slowly climbed his way through the ranks before things ended up taking a turn for the worse. Through a fair few parties celebrated after his graduation from the Police Academy, Victor picked up something of a drinking habit, which eventually spiraled into alcohol dependency which resulted into him regularly drinking on the job, and thus getting himself kicked off the force. It was at this point that Victor was at his lowest, frequently going from bar to bar as his bank account slowly emptied. It was when he was about to lose his apartment and thus be forced into homelessness that Victor stumbled across a way to turn his greatest weakness into a greater asset. During one of his numerous drunken stupors, Victor encountered a scruffy older man who was also partial to drinking by the name of Li Fei-Hung. Li saw something of himself in Victor and decided to help him out of his downward spiral in a similar way to how he found himself; by mastering the Drunken Fist. After several months of training and with a good bit of help from Li, Victor finally managed to turn his addiction into something of a strength. Now, Victor is the owner and sole member of his own Private Detective agency, and with the sudden influx of crime and other weirdness, Victor is hoping that business might start booming soon.
