I think this image
◊ helps to illustrate the concept. We are experiencing the story from someone's flawed perspective, and the image shows that the narration is from someone's memory, which could be flawed or distorted. Alternatively, we might be able to tweak the image to better illustrate that the recollection is imperfect. (Source

Idea from The Simpsons. Namely, this scene.
EDIT: Wasn't sure whether to make the stem of the speech balloon white or use the scene itself as part of that stem, but I'm not sure how to do the latter anyway.

Would it be easier to find another alternative for that one, or for this one?
Were I to swap the quality, could something like it be used on either trope?
More to the point, is the overall concept; situation being described edited into a speech balloon pointing out from the mouth of the character describing it; worthwhile enough to try on other scenes, or scenes from other episodes?

Pretty standard JAFAAC situation. While this kind of trope doesn't lend itself to an image I actually have a replacement suggestion
◊.
