The trailer for Robert Zemeckis's new movie, ''Welcome to Marwen, based on the true story of Mark Hogancamp. After he lost his memory being beaten up by bigots at a bar, Hogancamp built a personal art therapy project, Marwencol, a miniature town at war where women battle Nazis.

It’s interesting to see Robert Zemeckis exploring another avenue for motion-capture again. Having alienated a lot of viewers with the Uncanny Valley in Mars Needs Moms, and avoiding motion-capture all together in his following films, this time he appears to be embracing the Uncanny Valley aspect by having the actors be in-universe action figures.

One note of apprehension is that the trailer makes no mention of Hogancamp being a crossdresser, which is the reason why he got beaten up and why most of his friends are women. There’s so far only a single frame of a man in heels, so we shall see if it’s depicted or erased.

I think it's okay to use embeds again:

Didn't know Mark Hogancamp was a crossdresser. Oof. Maybe marketing thought that was a touchy subject and are saving that for the actual movie so they can focus on what's looking like Inglourious Basterds meets Toy Story.

But yeah, I remember seeing this be featured on Cartoon Brew. It's interesting to say the least. Zemeckis wants to keep playing (pun) with motion capture, but how do you do that without weirding out the audience via the Uncanny Valley? Justify it somehow! And what better way than with toys that bear a striking resemblance to the live actors? grin

Whenever I hear about Robert Zemeckis doing anything that's not the Roger Rabbit sequel, I die a little inside.

Back to the Future: Part IV would be the only acceptable substitute.
