June 1, 2017: At about 8:17 A.M., a bright flash of light briefly appears in the 3rd story window of an abandoned hotel building in an inconsequential city in the middle of Flyover Country (the exact location is going to be kept vague). Nobody outside notices it, but it changes the lives of a small group of people who happen to be in the building. This is not a coincidence, for they were not in the building a moment ago. They are random, rather ordinary people from locations all over the world who were suddenly and mysteriously transported in an instant to room 313 of an old, abandoned, and decrepit hotel. However, there is one major difference between all of them: all of them are from different timelines where history diverged from our own, and no two are from the same timeline. Now, stuck in a strange and foreign world, they must try to find out what brought them here and how to get back (if they don't decide they like it more in this timeline) and avoid discovery by the authorities, which would almost certainly result in them being committed to a mental institution. They must now learn to work together and lie convincingly to locals if they want to have any chance of success...

Elseworlds is a weird RP that is not a Crossover, and also isn't the kind of story where you play an extraordinary and powerful individual, instead, you're just an ordinary person. Does that mean that you're playing a Ridiculously Average Guy/Girl or that the only thing even the slightest bit extraordinary about your character is that they're from an Alternate History? No. Instead, it simply means that, as a whole, they are just an average person instead of a crazy powerful one. It also means that, as normal people, they are going to have quirks, flaws, and things they're very talented and/or skilled at.

Anyways, although characterization is very important and is always encouraged, you should also focus on Worldbuilding the world your character is from, including point of divergence, history post-divergence, and what it's like in the modern day. You can include as much or as little detail as you like, but some detail about these things is necessary. Also, if you go overboard in a huge way with the history, please just include a link to a google drive file with the timeline instead of just cramming 3 pages of history onto your character sheet.

Anyways, if you don't really have an idea, here are some cool alternate history scenarios (in youtube video format) to get those creative juices flowing:

Anyways, here are the rules:

     Da Roolz
  • Origin timelines should be a I or a II on the Sliding Scale of Alternate History Plausibility. Some III's may be accepted, but only in exceptional circumstances (usually if the point of divergence is the only unrealistic part of the timeline).
  • No Alternate History Wanks. No Alien Space Bats. No Exceptions.
  • No Straw Utopias or Straw Dystopias. Even an alternate reality where the Axis won World War 2 will have redeeming qualities, namely the fact that even if Nazi Germany became a superpower, successfully invading the United States, let alone conquering them, would be nigh-impossible. On the flip-side, Utopia is even less likely than Dystopia, and that's all I'm going to say about that.
  • Not really a rule so much as a suggestion, but Alternate History scenarios where the Confederacy won the American Civil War or the Nazis won World War 2 are way overdone.
  • Despite the rule against Straw Utopias and Straw Dystopias, timelines that are only somewhat better or somewhat worse off than our world are perfectly acceptable, and timelines that are Sugar Bowls (such as... well... shit, I can't think of one) or Crapsack Worlds (such as a timeline where the Nazis won World War 2), while discouraged, are probably acceptable so long as they have their share of problems or redeeming features.
  • If a point of divergence occurs a long time ago, the timeline will probably be utterly different. As such, Alternate Techline is encouraged in these scenarios, whereas In Spite of a Nail is discouraged.
  • On second thought, In Spite of a Nail is discouraged pretty much all the time unless Justified.
  • Timelines must be your own. Expy realities, while discouraged, are fine, but the reality must *technically* be your own, original timeline.
  • Action-oriented characters are okay, but keep in mind that they'll probably be mostly useless, since this isn't an action-oriented RP.
  • As stated above, your character should be an ordinary person who just happens to be from an alternate timeline.
  • Don't be a dick. Values Dissonance due to being from an alternate timeline is fine, but downright evil characters are unacceptable.
  • Only one character per player.

Character Sheet:

  • Name:
  • Age:
  • Gender:
  • Appearance:
  • Occupation: your character's job/occupation before they were displaced.
  • Equipment: the stuff your character had on their person when they were suddenly somewhere else... (minus the clothes on their back, you don't need to describe those)
  • Languages: Languages your character speaks. Native language should be marked with a capitol "N" in parenthesis - like this: English (N), German, French. Your character may speak no more than 6 languages (although they may learn more later).
  • Timeline History: (you could just link to a document if it's too big for the normal character sheet)
    • Point of Divergence:
    • Post-Divergence History:
    • Modern World:
  • Personal History: Your character's background and history as an individual person.

Weird. I just googled "Elseworlds", and apparently it's a DC Comics Comic Book line or something. I'm utterly oblivious to comic books, so I apologize if the title caused anyone any confusion.
