1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Alright, let's see what's been changed since I was gone.

Folders are now staying open, which is awesome! And I love how the spoilers option is back on the sidebar.

Problems though, still being logged out when I close my browser and I still can't change my icon. Also, no idea if this was mentioned before, but for some reason any trope links in spoilers are a lighter blue than other trope links. It might just be me, but it's a bit unsettling. But at least we're getting fixes.

[up] I was visiting DARLING in the FRANXX's main and YMMV pages and I noticed that both were locked as well. Do you have an ETA for when both pages (and other inadvertently locked pages) will be unlocked?

Please add in a way to revert tvtropes to it's old layout, the new look is terrible to look at, while the old design was soothing.

It's been mentioned before, but getting the "Preview" feature on the editing page functional again would be very nice. If you click the button nothing happens. I'm using a desktop Windows 10 Firefox setup.

Please don't actually cut Trope Launch Pad on the Cut List, I've just put it there to check if it's true that cut reasons aren't displayed to tropers or moderators.

And speaking of Trope Launch Pad, it should be a special redirect to https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/tlp_activity.php, similar to many other special redirects (like Ask The Tropers to https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/query.php?type=att) (I'm using a 2017 laptop with Windows 10 as the operating system and the current version of Microsoft Edge as the browser, but I don't think this is an issue exclusive to this device)

I'm on Safari/iOS. I can now log in on it, but the site keeps logging me out (every time I leave the site and come back, but one time, not even that needed to happen). This doesn't happen on Chrome/Mac OS. Also, on both, "Show Spoilers" won't stay on like it used to.

I'm having issues with spurious page locks on the pages related to Luke Cage.

Let's see... I've had to log in again on every computer I visit the site on (a minor annoyance, to be sure), reset my preferences on each computer (a bigger annoyance), and it's particularly inconvenient when my edits won't save because of the aforementioned HTML issue (even though I'm not adding any HTML). Oh, and one page I canceled an edit on (since I didn't want to hold it while looking up relevant info to ensure content accuracy) ended up staying locked for the better part of an hour (and then when I did get to edit it again, the HTML error came up).

And I just don't care much for the new look. That could change once the formatting problems get resolved, but for now, in the words of Mr. Horse, "No sir, I don't like it!"

On the main forum page, the FAQ subforum doesn't seem to have the same bold formatting as the rest of the subforums do when there's a new post.

Personally I don't think I like the page numbers below threads on the subforum pages since the numbers take up a line of otherwise unused space, plus the numbers aren't useful when the thread link takes you to where you last left off anyway.

For accidentally locked pages, just manually put the edit page URL in and you should be fine.

Deal me in on the "have to log back in every time I re-open my browser" hand. It's not much of a hassle since it remembers my data, but it's concerning.

Gonna be blunt and say I REALLY don't like this new design and I DESPISE the way my watchlist is hidden onto my profile and now looks like an unorganized mess, instead of just a simple, clean list that shows which articles in my watchlist were just recently edited.

The new layout for Related has made cleaning out misused tropes a breeze. I've zapped many misuses of Dude, Not Funny!, but they remain on the Related. Same for other Related. Related Main / DudeNotFunny continues to list 2471 wicks despite my removing many, does anyone else get that number or is it just me?

Previously, adding [=

I might have brought this up before, but I think this is new information I hope helps.

on mobile, if you open a folder to read the tropes in it, they get cut off and you can't read all of them.

I was trying to read the tropes for Coco (that disney film) and i opened the folder on the page for tropes a-f, but it cut off somewhere in the Es. I had to get the desktop version up to be able to read the rest of them in the folder.

Now I'm being locked out of pages that I haven't even made recent edits on. Please put this as a high priority fix, because if all pages end up getting locked (especially ones I'm following), I won't be able to make edits anymore.

I feel like this update may have been inadequately tested!

I don't have any bugs to report that haven't already been reported, but the old Night Vision was my preferred look for the site, and the new Night Vision hurts my eyes. I think it's the blue.

Related isn't updating. On new pages it still registers 0 wicks. I just made a couple of links to Mawkish Mistake, and the Related page is still at zero.

Someone just sent me a warning about indexing the new trope I launched (Mawkish Mistake) but as I explained in my previous post, I can't do that due to the glitch that is happening with the Indexes right now. Still using Edge. Did they recently fix this or was the person just unaware that this is happening?

If an add loads while the user is typing a message (adding a post, modifying a trope, etc), then the cursor is lost, requiring the user to re-select the text field.

Using Chrome. Have not tried any other browsers.

Not a bug but a gripe anyway: what happened to the edit button on the page history? That's really convenient for the times when I start history browsing and see stuff that needs to be fixed up.
