1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

[up][up] I can confirm that accessing the beta test site was very random. It popped up a few times by itself at random and after that I would check it by directly entering the URL.

If any Admins and Mods see this post, then take the time to please read and consider. I think I've already said this to another Mod and I don't know if she responded or spread the word among the other Mods and Admins, so I'll probably repeat it here. It would be better to dispel peoples concerns by giving us in depth progress reports and not just saying "we working on it" in some way or form. Remember Mighty No. 9? Communication between backers and developers(not to mention with in the development itself) was borderline nonexistent. The result: An at best okay game and at worst unpolished Megaman knockoff. It would help reduce complaints if you gave tropers more in depth progress reports and accurate guesstimates of when you believe you can get the problem resolved. Also, what new functions was this overhaul supposed to come with anyway?

This is just plain dumb. But I sat through several issues on Fanfiction, and I can sit through this! I really would like the old style back, though. Maybe you could include it as a slider?

ssjSega [tup] Said it before and i'll say it again. The lack of communication has been shocking. They have taken the Youtube/Facebook route to business and that is just unacceptable. Either they don't want to speak to us, which is insulting, or they are embarrassed - which is understandable and something that I can forgive provided that they start to get over that embarrassment soon and speak to us. They may be the owners, but we are the wielders of the wiki magic that built it.

Oh, "bad coding" is the go-to excuse this time around for conveniently not letting people to use the old layout?

@thatsnumberwang: difference is that even if Youtube suddenly springs a new design on you, it's rather easy to say that you do not want to use the new one and immediately go back to the old one. With maybe a pop-up appearing once when you choose to go back to the old, asking you for feedback on why you don't want to use the new design.

[up][up][up]If they were talking about the 2.0 thread, you could search the forums for "2.0". If not, I'm not sure which one they mean.

[down]drew, I just noticed that when I edit to add arrows in forum posts, after adding one it sends you to the end of your text when before it sent you to the start. Obviously this is an inconvenience if you want to add more than one arrow. Is this intentional?

We are just about to release several bug fixes and minor design updates based on feedback here. Also working on a list of what was changed initially and bug patches. Still a lot of work to do, but we will get there.

I also noted the preview button isn't working yet.

Also, guys, be a bit more patient. It was a bumpy rollout, and it will take some time to work everything out. Already logins seem to be fixed, as well as editing and page locks, so there is definitely progress.

And thanks to the mods for providing a patch notes.

[up][up][up] Yeah, that's kinda sketchy that there wasn't any proper documentation until now.

Still, at least we're being told that some fixes are (hopefully) being put into place.

[up][up][up]There was invisible beta going for (supposedly) months that didn't pick up blatantly obvious issues and you are saying people should just be patient?

How about not releasing something that is clearly broken and untested? Unless TV Tropes is now run by Friend Computer, ofc.

If you aren't going to remove this new UI (Which you very likely won't, sadly.) can you at LEAST change the Thread Watch so it ONLY shows threads with new unread posts in them so we don't have to scroll down through a list of 100+ threads ?

Well, clearly the beta testing was insufficient, but now they are live testing, and fixing bugs as they go along.

If the bugs persist for several more weeks, THEN its time to get out the pitch forks. But giving them a week to fix things is not all that unreasonable. Its easy to say: fix it NOW, but it DOES take time.

OK, it seems like most of the issues reported after my last megapost are already on the lists. I'll make another bug collection tomorrow unless one of my colleagues prefers to do it.
