1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

I don't get why cheap must automatically mean minimalist, colorless design, though. Are they paying per coloured pixel or something?

I usually log in Firefox, but I wanted to see if my lack of blinking text cursor was a Firefox thing or if it was a problem for other browsers too. SO I logged in on Safari. Well, I tried to, but it said my password and username were invalid, even though I copy pasted them from my Firefox window, so add "I can't log in with Safari to the list."

Also the site looks like ass in desk top view. If this was done to save money it shows because the site looks cheap now and barely functions.

If this was how this site was supposed to look for the mobile version, I'd be okay with that. It definitely looks like it's made for being looked at on a phone... which, if that is the intended idea, is a huge slap in the face to people using computers.

As you can see on Funny.Wiki Sandbox, text colours now work on the wiki. Should pages locked because of outdated colour markup (like Laconic. All Your Colors Combined) be unlocked, then?

Looking at the seven links above, a quick bullet point count suggests there are about 270 bullet points with issues on. Allowing for duplication, we've got anything from 200 to 250 issues raised so far.

I work in website development. If I'd released something that broken to a live site, I'd be fired. This should have gone onto a test server and been beta tested by chosen group of experienced tropers, mods, admins etc. Most of these issues could then have been caught before the live release and we'd be looking at a far more manageable list of issues that didn't come up in testing.

[up][up] - There was beta testing, which started at least 5 months ago, and given that the Wayback Machine has archives of it going back to December of last year...

I was part of it, among others.

I dunno what went wrong, but apparently something did? Possibly due to higher than expected demand?

It wasn't the total lack of a beta test, at least.

Maybe the header should say that there was at least a beta, so people don't keep asking about it?

In the forums, the Add Post button should be on all pages. Shouldn't have to go to the last page to add a post (although adding a post probably should take you to the last page once you actually post).

Okay, the blue color has grown on me. Still not a fan of the aesthetic change to crowning moments, the moving of show spoilers from the display to profile, the complete change in the way folders looks, or the overhaul overall (I would like at least an option to go back to the last design), but the blue is nice.

I don't know if it was already brought up, but Quote Source is not registered as an index anymore, means that if you click at random tropes and want to look at the bottom if the quote was already put on a list, it doesn't work anymore.

Heck, use the old design, but make it blue. That'd be fine.

I have to mention this about the new location of the open/close all folders button. It moves as the page finishes loading completely, but you can click on things beforehand. Since it causes a jump, it also causes all the folders and such to jump upward, meaning you always click on the wrong folder because the dang thing didn't load itself properly in its new space.

[up][up]That's because custom titles are still broken.

Other bugs:

  • * While pressing Save Draft gives you an error, doing Add Post afterwards does give you the text you put in. I'd assume that's because the redirect is still broken.

On the more aesthetic end:

  • The "Following" on top of the Forum index and when you add a post should be changed to Thread Watchlist as that's kinda confusing when we've got another "Following" for the Wiki Watchlist on the avatar drop-down bar.

drewski already said so a couple of pages back but for those who missed it: The admins have said that they are now "Hands on deck" at getting bugs and design issues resolved. The staff needs examples of the following problems, though:

  • Spacing down doesn't work in signatures.
  • The characters "files" that contained all respective Character tropes now don't show ALL the tropes when you open them
  • Links to outside sites now have small text.
  • all the images are so tiny now in work pages. They are like, what 180 pixels wide instead of the previous max of 350?
  • Also in Night Vision Mode, when editing or writing a new post in the forum, the thread title remains blue on white.

Other than that, issue list #8:

  • To anyone who's had the problem of pages getting locked while you try to edit them, you can bypass this by typing the URL of the Editing version of the page into the browser's search bar.
  • Wide Load keeps switching to "off" every time you log out.
  • Crossover-Enthusiast: My profile doesn't show the avatar, just a generic image error picture.
  • The background of the "Create New" tab is a garish red. It doesn't work well with the black text and is kind of an eyesore.
  • could add the little red bullet back to the watchlist? That worked a lot better than the current "everything with a new edit is a slightly darker gray" format.
  • Also on the watchlist, the latest edit for the Trope Pantheons is incorrect: the latest edit is by the system, not thamagicnugget2.
  • remove the "The Main namespace is too big to display." message from the Main namespace index and just display the pages, since it's much smaller than it was, and it has 700+ less pages compared to the YMMV namespace index, which does show pages.
  • Can't login without Javascript
  • turning Javascript on causes the front page to vanish
  • selecting text (easier on desktop than clicking on spoiler items) does not show spoilers any more. I really wish it would again!
  • if I view tvtropes on my laptop on chrome, there is the lefthand sidebar switch in the sidebar. However if I use chrome on my phone, it still shows the show spoilers slide instead.
  • Indexing doesn't seem to be working.
  • checking out TLP, and the History page is unformatted, and my replies to the active drafts got cleared.
  • Redmess: getting the memory leak problem (newest Firefox and windows 10).
  • Display options are acting really strangely. They work when ticked the first time, but if you click through to a different page the effects (wide load, sticky header etc.) revert back, even though the boxes are still ticked.
  • the More button overlaps with the Follow TV Tropes icon when I'm on my Follow page (and on other pages as well).
  • Where did the "Random page in this namespace" button go?
  • The scale tags that appeared beside tropes on a works main page which told you they should go on the YMMV page seem to have disappeared.
  • whenever I try to open a folder of sufficient length, after a certain point, it gets cut off by the folder below.
  • A small positive: the new Thumpped message is pretty good.
  • Times New Roman the font for Darth Wiki page titles? The previous one was at least thematically appropriate.
  • Every draft I visit gives me the same message about leaving comments about the draft below
  • the [TLP ]draft font is unreadable in Night Vision because it's gray on black.
  • The dropdown menu [in TLP] still calls it YKTTW.
  • The new mod-post highlighting is barely noticeable at all.
  • Trying to click on the Random Trope or Random Media buttons makes them jump up away from the mouse, trying to hide behind my bookmarks. Are they scared?
  • On this [lakingsif] iPad, in the search box, the magnifying glass and word Search are overlapping.
  • in the TLP main page the number of hats a draft has is shown to the left of the bombs (both on the right of the title), but on the draft where you give hats/bombs, the bombs are on the left. It's very confusing.
  • It seems if the page is legitimately locked, one can access the editing interface via the url, but edits made will not save.
  • Ooh, one thing which I just discovered, which I like a LOT, is that the related to pages are group by category
  • The "follow" list no longer shows when pages have been updates
  • The sidebar is still too wide. It's one of the reasons I still use an adblocker.
  • On Firefox, with settings mentioned in my last post, bullet lists don't show up in Preview mode on the forums, but do show up in the actual post. Paragraph breaks also don't work, at least in preview mode.
  • I just logged out, and instead of the "you're now logged out message" that I got before (even after the update), I got a "thanks for confirming you're email" (their typo) message... is this just a glitch?
  • on mobile Chrome, the first few options on the main menu are gargantuan and take up about an eighth of the screen each
  • getting hit with the 'close tabs/browser, get logged out' deal.
  • (Viper Magnum 357) Firefox: does not seem to be mentioned, but my Email is now considered 'unverified', and no option to verify
  • when Night Vision is turned on, the white text and light bars for "Header" and "WMG" headings, as well as newly posted forum comments I've made, make them practically unreadable.
  • IIRC, second-level bullets are supposed to indent the lines past the first one, Check the last entry of the page's Color Coded Item Tiers. It looks as if the last bullet forms a new paragraph. If the first-level bullets can wrap paragraphs properly, then it should also apply to the inner bullets. Of all the formatting changes, this is the most jarring one IMO.
  • The Awesome, Awesome Music, Funny, Heartwarming, and Tearjerker now have pink headers on top? I believe the previous theme had more variety when it comes to these Sugar Tabs' colors.
  • Editing a page, then clicking Back from the browser will immediately lock the page. Clicking the locked Edit button does nothing.
  • Check the Quotes tab, first level ("Songs") and second level ("English Vocals") headings have the exact same text formatting.
  • I have no idea if I’m stuck in the mobile view or if for some reason the desktop view looks like a worse version of the old mobile view, but there’s no option to change the view as far as i’m aware of.
  • On forum search results, the titles are way oversized, they could stand being a smaller font to make the search results a bit better searchable.
  • Also, searching for anything shows every single post from every thread including that term. This is not very useful when trying to find a thread.
  • Also, when filtering for a genre and skipping to the last page of the results, it shows an empty page with "no results found" message.
  • I can't upload any images. When I try to use the old "drag and drop" method to upload (which seems to be the only way to do it — you can't copy and paste images or links), it takes you to a plain black page displaying the image, like it used to do if you tried to upload one picture on top of another; if you click "back", you return to the previous page, the image is lost, and you're given the uploading box again.
  • some of the drop down selections, like opening the relationship status in the profile section, appear as a white box with pale pink text that's impossible to see. It makes it hard to select things. Same thing happens when a new post is first made.
  • Also, Wiki Word for numbers is weird: 24 Yeah, that shouldn't happen.

Side comment, I did try to fix the bulletin link but it doesn't work even after trying. I think I've figured out what the problem is and made a report on the matter.

~Water Blap: The separate lists are mostly for the admins' convenience, but I may try collating them into one big list.
