1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

I have to admit that I greatly prefer how it was before, but I'm not going to just say "Change it back".

A lot of effort was put into this update, and I think there's potential to help it out a lot.

Bugs and issues just need to be straightened out, and we can help out by reporting what we find.

People make mistakes, and people can correct those mistakes.

Other things I've noticed that seem off...

Whenever I go to edit my profile I find that there's an area that I can highlight to show the option to change your avatar or upload a new one.

That's very good, but it's a bit of a problem because there's no indication that it's there unless you highlight it (I'm assuming your current avatar is supposed to be visible there, but it doesn't seem to be).

Also the icons seem to be close together and the area it pops up seems a little finicky for some reason.

I miss the boxes around posts. The little bubble that makes it look like your avatar is talking is actually neat, but it needs to be a whole box that is uniform with the rest, similar to the previous version of the site.

And I'm not particularly found of how the "most recent post" thing is in night vision. It's near unreadable, but I'm pretty sure people have mentioned this before.

I haven't had this next thing happen to me personally, but some friends of mine have apparently been struggling with their posts being posted. I'm not sure of the details, but I felt I should mention it.

I will let you guys know if I find any other issues or recall any others I've happened upon.

Another display problem summary post:

  • Quote spacing
  • Quote indents
  • Bullet indents
  • Bullet spacing
  • Image sizes, with borders
  • No spoiler toggle
  • Line breaks don't work properly
  • Weird alphabetization on related pages
  • Note tags are plain text
  • (mobile Chrome) the first few options on the main menu are gargantuan and take up about an eighth of the screen each
  • The arrows you press to navigate a thread only appear at the bottom of the page (previously they appeared at the top as well).
  • Forum posts are no longer numbered.
  • The number of the last page on a given forum thread no longer shows up.
  • Indentation of numbered bullets is inconsistent with regular ones, and how much indentation there is seems to depend on a number of factors, including:
    1. The nested level of the numbers (#, ##, or ###)
    2. Whether a second-level list is under a first-level number or a regular bullet
    3. Whether the list is inside a folder or not.
  • The before and after boxes in History are way to near each other, some text I've seen also goes outside the box as well, they need to be expanded a bit.
  • (Firefox) Cursor disappears in text box for PMs and editing.

Anything else? And try to include your browser and OS.

A lot of effort was put into this update
There was? I mean, I would agree, if this update didn't occur out-of-nowhere and was done within a few hours. And, you know, didn't look like basic, boring... stuff.

@Deadbeatloser 22

No offence, but that's going to keep happening, because the Wiki has a (longstanding) issue with communication (Since its foundation really).

You're going to keep getting those posts so long as mod and admins remain in this near-radio silence state.

Give people info. Concrete info beyond "We're working on it." and "It's being looked at" and other vague statements.

What's the plan? Reverting or forging ahead and addressing the (so far) 7 pages of bugs 1 by 1?

How long is this gonna take? 2 days? a month? a year?

What's the priorities right now? And what are the benchmarks trying to be achieved.

Heck, we don't even know WHY the site was completely changed. You can't expect your user base to get no info and not lose their shit as the wiki's very basic and core functionalities aren't working.

Like you guys, Mods and Admins, haven't even bothered to issue a working bulletin yet. It's still the one with the broken URL.

Forgot to mention earlier, Firefox 61 on Win 7/64 is also getting hit with the 'close tabs/browser, get logged out' deal.

In Firefox: does not seem to be mentioned, but my Email is now considered 'unverified', and no option to verify. Does that mean if I get kicked with another login error I might have no way to recover my account?

Pretty much agree with Ghilz up there, just give us some more info about this and specifics about what's happening beyond just "we're working on it".

Also, I've seen several people mention that this version is cheaper to run which is (probably) one of the reasons for the change, and honest question from someone who doesn't know a lot about this kind of thing, just wondering what specifically would make this cheaper?

Can we please get a unified list of problems? Having seven kind of disincentive-izes people from reading them...

Anyway, there's a display problem with second-level bullet points when the text goes to a second line. The text lines up with the bullet point rather than with the text on the first line. This may have been mentioned in one of the seven lists but it's not exactly specific to the problem I'm talking about.

[up][up][up][up][up][up][up] Well, if they didn't put any effort we wouldn't even have this much... Stuff like this isn't easy to do.

Not to mention that things can go wrong, and they are taking what we say into account.

I'd like to be optimistic and believe that they're trying their hardest to improve the site.

I think it got lost in the shuffle, but can someone tell me why Game Show is no longer functioning as an index? Most of the pages on it like Double Dare (1976) are displaying the "This page has not been indexed" tab.

It even has the "index" flag set but it's not working somehow.

If they did this to save money then they are going to fail even more in the long run, if these issues aren't fixed or addressed soon then people are going to leave the site and they won't be making any money.

Problems with the forum search: In addition to the fact that using quotes makes it glitch, there's also no way to specifically search for thread titles any more, making it unnecessarily difficult to find individual threads.

Firefox, Windows, latest of both.

I honestly don't think the new UI itself is too bad. I think I'd be okay with it once the bugs are ironed out and some of the glaring contrast issues are fixed.

Well, what do you know? Editing works now, so I was finally able to fix the spelling error on Dirty Old Man that was bugging me so much.

I think it's safe to say that progress on fixing the update's problems is being made.

Peace out, y'all.

I don't mind the new UI too much as it seems to work mostly the same as the old one but for some reason the preview button on the page where you edit things has stopped working for me.

I don't mind the blue, but I absolutely hate how the folders look now. What was so wrong with the yellow bars they were before? Or were those 'expensive'? If they are trying to make this look like a phone book, well, job accomplished. I guess it's nice for people who go here mostly via cellphones, but not for people like me who use a full PC to view this place.

[up][up][up]That might be the reason for the shrunken images, too, actually. ...In fact, it would explain why a lot of stuff looks uncomfortably small now.

How about we keep the smaller images for the mobile layout and the larger ones for the desktop layout? It's a decent compromise.

Edit: Really not appreciating the fact that I have to make an extra click just to edit my post now.

[up][up][up][up]Yeah, I'm fine with the visual changes to the sidebar and homepage, but the folders are what's killing me. Honestly, if they had just changed them to match the new color scheme I wouldn't be even slightly peeved. Honestly, these look so much sloppier then the older ones.

Wait what?
