1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

I just want to know the reasoning, the design philosophy, behind this shift. Cause on the surface it looks like a straight downgrade.

I've seen goddamn government sites that more functional and better looking than this...

So consensus overwhelmingly wants the site changed back...

When can we expect that to happen?

Consensus of what? As has been said many times, the crowner by its very nature is going to be heavily biased in favor of the opposition, because they're the only ones who would have any motivation to seek out the crowner in the first place.

[up][up] It's unlikely that it can.

I just logged out, and instead of the "you're now logged out message" that I got before (even after the update), I got a "thanks for confirming you're email" (their typo) message... is this just a glitch? Have the messages accidentally swapped? I never had an email attached to my account, can a mod check if there now is one somehow?

Should we make a list of pages that have been blanked due to edits?

I apologize for my behaviour back there. That being said, the current admins really don't seem like they know what they're doing.

Here's what I feel are the three things that led to such confusion and frustration:

1) Money. It seems like each update has been made to reduce running and server costs. Probably could've been avoided if the site had a Patreon page. I don't have any real experience with Patreon whatsoever but this might solve this one problem.

2) Failure to communicate. At least, properly. They probably could've given more advance warning that the site was getting another update.

3) Beta testing. The beta testing for this version of the site was very private, and very minimal, as explained in earlier pages. Probably could've been avoided if the beta testing was open to the public, in the sense that any contributor could provide design input. In turn, this prolly would've solved the communication problem.

I don't know if this has been brought up but is the removal of the ability to edit a page from the page history a bug or intended?

I didn't see it on the list of already reported things, but I noticed that the tropes listed on at least some "related" pages are strangely alphabetized. I sometimes see clumps of trope page names that are somewhat correctly alphabetized in regards to each other, but are interrupted with pages that start with another letter of the alphabet.

For instance, my current pet work page is related to hundreds of trope pages, including some starting with A and Z, but the first twenty or so to show on the "realted" list are a mess G-pages, F-pages,H-pages and E-pages.

On a full Sincerity Mode plus side, I like the way trope subpages that are linked to the work are now organized by trope name, and those at least seem to be alphabetized correctly.

And finally, I want to add something I have the impression to not have seen enough of on this thread, though I've been mostly reading the report compilations and the replies after the seventh one:

Good luck to you, everyone working hard to fix the various issues that have been reported![tup]smile

Summarizing some of the display problems (which should probably be kept separate from the wiki-breaking bugs):

  • Quote spacing
  • Quote indents
  • Bullet indents
  • Bullet spacing
  • Image sizes, with borders
  • No spoiler toggle
  • Line breaks don't work properly
  • Weird alphabetization on related pages

Anything else I missed?

For some reason, the Game Show page is no longer functioning as an index (i.e., all of the pages it are showing the "This page has not been indexed" code at the bottom).

I don't know if this is intentional or not, but on mobile Chrome, the first few options on the main menu are gargantuan and take up about an eighth of the screen each. Seems very excessive.

According to the entry on the Obvious Beta page, when TVT's "update" back in 2015 turned out to just be, well... an Obvious Beta, they reverted the site back to whatever the current layout at the time was. I'm guessing that's what we can probably expect to happen here. At least, I'm hoping so.

And when I hit Save Draft, it just says something along the lines of "Sorry, no discussion with that ID exists," or some kinda crap. Also, when I close outta TVT and reopen it, I have log right back in all over again.

[up]x7 Indentation of numbered bullets is inconsistent with regular ones, and how much indentation there is seems to depend on a number of factors, including:

  1. The nested level of the numbers (#, ##, or ###)
  2. Whether a second-level list is under a first-level number or a regular bullet
  3. Whether the list is inside a folder or not.

Friendly reminder: Inundating this thread with "when is the old layout going to be restored" or "why hasn't the old layout been restored yet" posts is not helping matters.

The difference here is that this time the underlying database of the site was changed entirely, which would both take much longer to roll back (though I don't think people would mind) and more importantly, the old system cost more to run.

  • The before and after boxes in History are way to near each other, some text I've seen also goes outside the box as well, they need to be expanded a bit.

  • There's a problem with indexing an episode on Recap pages, after making an episode page, it doesn't appear in the index at the bottom after editing.

Your receipt. You can keep the freakin' change.

[up][up][up] Considering how much the old site cost to run, I think people would be more sympathetic if there had been any warning, beta testing in the designated beta testing areas, or really any feedback at all before the rollout.

If money really was the issue, then why not make a Patreon? Someone mentioned it already, it could work as an option to help support the site.
