1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Sorry I was told there was a place where I could vote for the old design. Anyone know where that is?

To anyone who's had the problem of pages getting locked while you try to edit them, you can bypass this by typing the URL of the Editing version of the page into the browser's search bar.

Unfortunately, this does diddly squat about the Editing page refreshing instead of saving your edits.

The browser I'm using is Firefox, just in case that bit of information will be any help in fixing this update's horrendous amount of bugs.

Before I claw my eyes out, is there any way to change this retina-incinerating "Material" atrocity back?

Also, what the hell happened to the carriage return in my forum signature?

@windleopard Here is a link to the Crowner asking whether this update was a mistake: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/crowner.php/SingleProposition/ChangeLayoutBack#jm3jgpl8

Currently has 131 upvotes and 10 downvotes as of this typing.

I was once told that the majority rules, and it's clear as day that the majority wants the old version of the site back.

Also, why are all the articles and prepositions in linked titles capitalized? Articles and prepositions should not be capitalized, even in titles, unless they're at the beginning. This is why auto-punctuation is a bad idea.

That edit trick seems to get around the problem of the blanked but locked pages.

You guys probably should've waited a bit before rolling out this overhaul... Anyway, here's the bugs I found just bugs me:

  • My profile doesn't show the avatar, just a generic image error picture.
  • My signature shows up on a single line, even when they're on separate lines in the signature editor.
  • The forum colors don't show up, either.
  • Redirects don't work.
  • The background of the "Create New" tab is a garish red. It doesn't work well with the black text and is kind of an eyesore.
  • The date I joined is incorrect. I joined on March 26th (I'm pretty sure it was the 26th), 2016, not Apr 4th, 2012.
  • The edit button doesn't show up on the page history.
  • This one isn't a bug, but could add the little red bullet back to the watchlist? That worked a lot better than the current "everything with a new edit is a slightly darker gray" format.
  • Also on the watchlist, the latest edit for the Trope Pantheons is incorrect: the latest edit is by the system, not thamagicnugget2.
  • This one also isn't a bug and has been around for a while, but please untranparent the grin for the Funny icon, as switching to Nightvison just makes it look weird.

Also, I don't know what you guys are talking about, but the preview button has never showed up when editing a post for me.

I think my favorite thing about the overhaul is how the bulletin concerning it consists only of a broken link.

The namespace indexes glitch up the sidebar, see this.

Also, please remove the "The Main namespace is too big to display." message from the Main namespace index and just display the pages, since it's much smaller than it was, and it has 700+ less pages compared to the YMMV namespace index, which does show pages.

No “Show Spoilers” is a HUGE con, but the new design is somewhat easier on the eyes. Will they be bringing it back? They seem to replace it with a totally useless left-handed sidebar (I'm not left handed), I have to click every spoiler when browsing.

Can't login without Javascript, but turning Javascript on causes the front page to vanish. Honestly, I'm not sure how I managed to log in at all, all I know is that it took a long sequence of changes to my settings that I don't feel inclined to go through every time even if I could work out what they were. So I guess this is goodbye...

Yeah, I might as well add my two cents to the issues list (though I understand the layout will be switched back soon given the state of the crowner).

  • First off, selecting text (easier on desktop than clicking on spoiler items) does not show spoilers any more. I really wish it would again!

  • Second, the 'Show Spoilers' switch doesn't show up in the Display panel, so I can't toggle Spoilers on and off depending on which page I'm on (a lifesaver if I'm browsing the trope page of a work I'm currently watching).

Ook.

Features disappeared: The forum page listing isn't also on the top anymore.

Features that still should be added: A way to view more than 25 posts per page on the forums. A quote features would be nice, but isn't necessary.

EDIT: Also, for my signature, why is it all one line? The asterisk doesn't seem to work for that anymore?

EDIT 2: Do redirects not work anymore??? (Already noted). Also, where's the thing that allows you to search forum posts by troper?

Found another issue that seems to not have popped up in the bug lists of the mods: if I view tvtropes on my laptop on chrome, there is the lefthand sidebar switch in the sidebar. However if I use chrome on my phone, it still shows the show spoilers slide instead.

Indexing doesn't seem to be working.

I just made a work page, Bob Le Flambeur. Prior I had already ensured the link was on the Roger Ebert Great Movies List and the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list. After I just made the page, I put it on the index for French Films and Films of the 1950s. I then did null edits for all four indexes. None of them are showing up on the Bob le flambeur work page, and the latter two aren't even showing up on the Related page. Nor is the Jean-Pierre Melville link showing up on the Related page.

So I was just trying to edit the character page for Lisa, nothing major, just some clarifications and the addition of a couple tropes, and when I saved the edit the entire thing was gone. This has never happened to me before, and nothing in the edit history makes it at all clear what could've caused it.

Was told to repost this here, and so I did.

Indexes also not displaying properly. The aforementioned Palme d'Or index is not showing up on any of the work pages. The Lost Weekend, Marty...doesn't show up.
