1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

@TairaMai: yeah I've noticed that too. It appears to indicate the last post you left off when you close the tab the page was on.

Basically they've honestly made the look less garish (never was a fan of pink to indicate moderators, glad it's yellowish with a red border actually.)

EDIT: damnit, Irene beat me to it.

The You Tube embeds are busted because it's using http rather than https for the You Tube URL. Since tvtropes.org is being served as https, it's not going to allow http iframes.

There are other http elements on the page that make Edge and Chrome note that the connection isn't fully secure.

Jun 26th 2018 at 8:57:08 PM

I'd like to second/third that in night mode, the blue colored text (basically every trope/link on the page) is more difficult to read than the previous green. I'm using mozilla on osx.

Re: Rollback: incredibly unlikely to happen

Well, maybe, but when an update is such a horrendous train wreck, it should probably at least be considered.

The link on the right side of the page that says "New overhaul", under Bulletins, is still not working. "File not found." That seems symbolic.

When making a post on Ask The Tropers, pressing enter doesn't create a new paragraph like it used to. Everything just stays in a single paragraph.

  • The mobile view is very hard for me to maneuver around, the notes are the size of normal text instead of the small font used, and the bullet points are cut off from the left.

  • When I go to a page, e.g. the Black Mirror NF page, there's no Image Pickin' thread notif even though I am logged and, as of typing (June 27, 2018, 12:00 EST), is still ongoing.

  • I couldn't open a hooked crowner on the Image Pickin' threads.

  • It's an eyesore.

Related to the above, is ATT currently supposed to have you go to another page to read a reply? It used to open within the same page itself. Not sure if this is a bug or intentional.

Buglist v. 6:

  • So it seems like the preview button disappears when you're editing a post you already made in the forums.

  • So Im sure by now just about everything I have to say has been said, but in case it hasnt: I would really like to be able to change the page Im on in a thread without having to scroll all the way to the bottom. Previous setup had page buttons at the top and bottom, and that was very user friendly.

  • Also, as someone with color vision deficiencies, I greatly prefer having a check mark next to newly updated threads over the current blue vs gray thread titles.

  • Latest version of Chrome, latest version of High Sierra, 2013 Macbook Pro, for device context: The only problem I'm having that looks like an actual glitch is the thing where my profile shows a broken image instead of my avatar.

  • Red links aren't red anymore, so the Darth Wiki page isn't doing it's job. I'm on chrome if that helps. Is this happening for any of you?

  • I've been trying to find a way to search for posts of tropers like you could before, but I have yet to find a proper way to? Perhaps I'm missing it, but it's no longer next to the ability to search the forums.

  • "Wide load" seems to be bugged so that turning it off actually turns it on and vice versa.

  • Also these page preferences don't seem to carry over whenever I refresh the page or go to a different one.

  • line breaks made with backslashes at the end of a line are broken, which I would like to assume is the bigger issue of the two.

  • Pages with TRS or IP discussions do not show links to the threads.

  • It's not only the spoilers button that doesn't work for me. The "show folders" button also does not work on Internet Explorer. Does Tv Tropes no longer work on IE?

  • To specify on the spoilers sitch, Show Spoilers is on in my profile settings, every spoiler is visible... But the mobile sidebar says it's switched off. Actually, every switcher on the doesn't work, visually. Functionally, it prolly works fine.

  • The site's formatting is still broken on Chrome on a 2016 ASUS ROG laptop running Windows 10. Clearing my cookies did not fix this. The login button is still non-functional. Firefox on that same laptop does not experience these errors.

  • These are on the most recent version of Firefox:
    • The preview button on the edit page doesn't work; nothing pops up, even with the option to block pop-ups in my browser definitely off.
    • Trying to go back and fix an edit shows a locked page; if this is a feature to keep people from spamming edits, fair enough, but when the preview page is also broken, it makes it a pain to go back and try to fix errors. It also shows up if you click the edit button on a page to, say, check the formatting of the work-up language, but don't actually change or save the article.
    • Footnote links are showing up as the same size text as the regular article text. It looks odd as anything.

  • Was it already mentioned that embedded links appear to be borked ATM?

  • The spacing for numbered bullets (made using # instead of *) is now inconsistent. A list of only numbered bullets is indented less than a list of regular bullets, but second-level numbered bullets under a regular bullet are indented more than regular second-level bullets. See Sandbox.Herald Alberich for an example. Edit: Looking at it further, first-level bullets are fine, but second- and third-level are wonky. A second-level number under a first-level regular bullet is indented as much as a third-level number under other numbers.

  • Found another issue. When I close Internet Explorer, I'm forcibly logged out and all of the display buttons on my profile are flicked off (not that it matters. They don't work if they're flicked on or off). This never happened before the update.

  • When clicking Save Draft when writing a post, I just get the error message "Sorry, no discussion with that id exists." (on a Samsung Galaxy J5 using the Samsung browser btw)

  • Links attached to longer phrases do not wraparound to the next line and instead break the paragraph they're in, can be seen on the Viva Las Vegas! and Omega Men pages.

  • Bug: expanding the post window and then typing in it causes it to retract to its normal size.

  • Clicking on spoiler boxes when Show Spoilers is on doesn't turn the spoiler filter back on.

  • There is seemingly a memory leak with either the site or ads, the site's pages are causing a constant memory increase.

  • Also, Animals See in Monochrome seems to be having issues with inbound wiki links. Its page lists it as un-indexed despite it being on Artistic License Biology and Animal Tropes, and its Related page says nothing links back to it despite at least the aforementioned links working just fine. Is this an isolated issue or are other pages doing this?

  • New Edits page is like super short now due of now only showing one page and thus can't browse through older edits.

  • In dark mode the highlighted post is literally unreadable cause the highlight is the same color of the text.

  • When making a post on Ask The Tropers, pressing enter doesn't create a new paragraph like it used to. Everything just stays in a single paragraph.

  • The mobile view is very hard for me to maneuver around, the notes are the size of normal texr instead of the small font used, and the bullet points are cut off from the left.

  • Related to the above, is ATT currently supposed to have you go to another page to read a reply? It used to open within the same page itself. Not sure if this is a bug or intentional.

Jun 26th 2018 at 9:06:16 PM

@zealots: If I'm right, and the frontend design/layout is as closely tied to the backend as I imagine, a toggle would require reimplementing the previous design on top of the current codebase, which given the bugs in backend logic right now is definitely not where any dev worth their salt would put their man-hours.

Occasionally, in mobile view and using sticky header, the random trope/search/avatar with profile stuff will seemingly disappear, and I'll have to slide the screen right to see/use them. (on page 33 of this thread at least) Turning it off fixes the header, but it goes back again when I turn it on

  • Characters.Twig keeps on reverting when I try to edit it, even though all the other pages I tried editing when they had issues work fine now.
  • From what I can observe the pages that got blanked but still have their page source are still locked.
  • The Edit page is a bit too wide in Wide Load.

@Sixthhokage 1: Thank you for your very prompt response. Given the mountains of bugs that seem to have come with this update, I agree that sorting those out should take priority over any aesthetic concerns. As someone with little technical knowledge (at least where coding is concerned), your explanation is much appreciated. Perhaps in the future, if user discontent persists, hopefully some sort of toggle may be made available.

Pictures are still far too small, avatars and page images alike. In fact, a lot of things are too small in the new layout. So you've got this, which is... fine, more or less. But then you've got stuff like THIS.

@strawberryflavored: Has there ever been a redesign as drastic as this before, though? I've been using this site (though not officially a member) since 2009, I even have old versions of pages saved on my hard drive and none of the redesigns to date (to my knowledge) have been as drastic as this. The first time I refreshed a page and saw this, I had to check the url to be sure I hadn't been redirected to one of the TVT knockoff sites somehow.

I just attempted to make a two-paragraph entry in Trope Finder, but when it saved, it was a single blob of text.
