1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

The mobile site doesn't work on my phone browser; it doesn't load properly, as seen here.

Since drewski asked for more specific information, I've got an LG X Charge and I'm using Opera. I'm pretty sure it's some problem with Opera specifically, 'cause I tried Chrome and it worked just fine there.

When I was trying to edit the Jurassic World page, it unfortunately came up blank. And when I tried to make some adjustments in the character sheet for The Asterisk War, it got me stuck on the edit page whenever I tried to save it.

So to summarize: This update broke the site. Some of the most basic functions are simply not working. We can argue about cosmetic changes, but when every browser has massive difficulties just editing the wiki, we can objectively consider it a failure.

You know, in spite of all the sh'te, I've got to say, this thread is really bringing us all together, ain't it? So many handles and faces here that I never see elsewhere on the forums. ^_^

Just like the last redesign, there's no nav menu on the bottom of forum pages right now (at least in Chrome on Android). So when I've finished reading a thread and want to go back to my watchlist, I have to either step back in my history (not a big problem if I only viewed one or two pages) or scroll to the top of the page.

If all of my watched threads are going to appear in the watchlist in reverse chronological order of last post, just with check marks to indicate which ones are unread, I can get used to that, but I think it makes the "Watched Threads List" page redundant.

I like Soble's view on the situation, as much as it sounds like it's leading to a revolution.

Using Title Search doesn't seem to work, at least on mobile. Anything you search for gives no results. It also say not to put quotes around search terms, but that pops up even when not using quotes.

Boy am i excited to have an entry about this redesign be put on the Obvious Beta and They Changed It, So It Sucks page with the entry on the latter being listed as a justified example.

Also i don't know why but i can use the site on Chrome just fine despite several people saying that they need to go incognito or use other browsers/devices to log in.

Also i have a question about the site regarding something that happened before this terrible update. Why do i need to wait almost HALF AN HOUR to save any edits i make on pages ?

Can you imagine if something like this happened with your favorite restaurant?

You walk into the building, only to see it looks completely different. A lot of your favorite items have been removed from the menu, and when you try to order the stuff that's already there, the staff claim they no longer serve it despite it still being on the menu.

As for me, I don't particularly care about the new look, what I care about is the bugs. If half the site's functions weren't broken right now, I think I'd be fine with this interface, but as it is...

[up][up][up] If that happened, it's likely nobody would ever visit that restaurant again... They Changed It, Now It Sucks!, after all.

I fear for the fate of this website...

Fast Eddie permanently banned adding quote buttons to the site.
So? He's retired and handed over all actual power to the new admins, i.e. he's completely powerless to do anything if said new admins decide to add quote buttons.

Spoilers can be individually clicked to show/hide when logged off again and I was able to edit a page (Fanfic) without it locking me out. They're slowly fixing some of the bugs.

Edit: Pages other people have edited are still locked though.

I wrote up a quick userstyle for Stylus that changes around the proportions of the site a bit, and restores shrunk images to their original size. Doesn't cover the whole site, and still has a few rough edges (e.g. it sometimes causes the site to switch to the mobile menu on desktop). Intended for use with Wide Load + Lefthand Sidebar.

It seems once someone edits a page no one else can, instead of no one being able to edit at all. Progress?

You guys are acting like it's the apocalypse. I find that funny.

What I don't find funny is how you act like the admins are ignoring their job. Did you know that coding a massive site like this is really fucking difficult? Not only that, they are aware that there are bugs that they haven't been able to catch with the beta. And they really want actual input of problems, not people whining that the site doesn't look right. Some of you are explaining problems, and that's fine. But others are throwing judgement purely based on the design alone without telling what the problem is.

Ok so the highlights on Night Vision mode are still absolutely blinding. Like, they are actually much worse than the highlights from before the site update. (I also don't understand why it's highlighting last posts, including mine? It seems a bit random)Hell, regular mode is also blinding. Is there no way to crank down the brightness that doesn't result in me reducing the rest of the site to unseeable?

Also I don't like how there's no longer a link back to the forums at the bottom of the thread pages.

I too noticed that once you close your browser (using Firefox at least) and reopen it, you gotta log into Tvtropes again. Which didn't occur in the last update.
