1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

I don't like how the twice indented bullet lines now go under the bullets. It looks messy.

Like so: (From RWBY/Tropes A To B)

  • Abusive Parents:
    • From the start of the series, Weiss heavily implies that her father, Jacques, was abusive towards her and possibly her sister while they were growing up. He received a lot of stress from dealing with the White Fang's terrorist acts against the Schnee Dust Company, so he often would come home from work in a less than pleasant mood. Once we see him in Volume 4, he's revealed to be a merciless sociopath who only cares about the family name - which he, in fact, married into and took for himself - and has no qualms about disinheriting Weiss for disobeying him one too many times.
    • Mercury implies his father, Marcus, is this as well as being an alcoholic. Later in a flashback episode, when Cinder first meets him, Mercury is found severely injured, his face is bruised and his legs are bleeding and nearly crippled, and he has just finished killing his father.

While the single ones don't go under the bullet.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: According to Pyrrha, the friendships she has made in Beacon are this for Jaune. He approached her knowing nothing of her Famed In Story status and combat prowess, completely sidestepping one of the main reasons of her Lonely At The Top woes. In turn, her interactions with the Butt Monkey made Pyrrha look more approachable to other people, which helped to partially subvert her Attractiveness Isolation.

See?

It looks strange so I don't think it was like that before...

I just think the whole interface is tiny and ugly. I get that y'all wanted the old dark blue back, but did you have to make the whole interface look so tiny?

Probably not.

Peace out, peeps.

[up] they are

Also, those with complaints about the forum "back" button: technically it's still there. If you're at the top of the page/hit the useful new "Top ^" button at the bottom (even if the arrow is far misaligned in its box), you'll see it shows the thread hierarchy in the form of "Forums > Wiki Talk". Clicking Wiki Talk will take you back there, as will Yack Fast in those thread, etc.

Separately, the Mark All As Read button in the main Forum page is too close to the Following button, I've accidentally clicked on it a few times already which would be bad if it actually worked.

It seems like that T Vtropes doesn't work on my Chrome unless I use the Incognito tab or Firefox. IT works on Firefox but I am not sure about Edge.

They definitely are. I mean, I mean assume they're reading them, and reverting the site to its previous version at the same time. A little unlikely, but hey.

Every time people make edits, the page is locked. I have no idea on why it is happening. It is a glitch. Please make it stop!

The "Mark all as read" button doesn't seem to work at all. I'm also not a fan of the new "Mark as read" buttons, unlike before they require interacting with a prompt and don't bring you back to the main page of the forum.

I'd also like a more obvious indicator of unread posts in a forum. The green check marks were much easier to see that the current bolding.

A lot of things seem to have had an extra click or step added to them, which seems like the reverse of what we want.

Some of the "Open/Close All Folders"tabs appear in places that mean they can't be clicked. Happened here: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Funny/SaturdayNightLiveSeason42

Also, the 'default: folders open' tab in profile doesn't seem to be defaulting keeping folders open.

Also, redirects and some external links such as to imgur do not seem to be working.

Although congratulations on allowing markup help to appear in the initial post and not just when you edit the post.

I also think the loss of checkmarks is a real problem-even with normal colors, it is difficult for me to see at a glance what threads are unread, and I do not think that is acceptable for people with average vision, let alone some of the self identified Tropers here with impaired vision.

At least two tropers have experienced editing a page that subsequently shows up blank, despite the source text being there.

honestly i'm not unhappy with the site design, but the way our posts are laid out is jarring to me. the lack of a clear box around the entire post makes it hard for me to read.

also: 1.8. why don't we have quote buttons yet?

I may have said this before, but I don't mind the redesign. The bugs, glitches, and inability to do basic tasks that I could do previously is what's ultimately a deal-breaker. I just hope that the admins are listening to people's complaints(with how many came up in a few hours it seems impossible for them to ignore) and actively try to fix this issue.

Also, why do I get the nagging suspicion that this extremely controversial and glitchy overhaul is going to get its own tropes page when this issue is fixed? My best guesstimate is someone's going to make one just so nobody repeats this mistake again.

I'm glad I discovered this thread, because for a good twenty minutes or so, I thought it was Chrome being goofy on me. But darn did I pick a wrong time to index characters. Hopefully everything gets cleared up soon.

This is has probably already been brought up, but a certain point, if you're logged in, refreshing will log you out. At least this happened to me twice.
