1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

I too have been shoved onto the logout train. TV Tropes, why fix something that isn't broken? ://

As a whovian I have to say it: “You’ve had this place redecorated haven’t you? I don’t like it!”

But seriously, I don’t mind the new design, my only complaint is the text size in the sidebar of the mobile site, could we maybe bring it down a bit?

Basically, when I try to log in on Safari, the screen darkens and...that's it. It's like the little login box is SUPPOSED to pop up, but never actually does.

Also getting the “you are attempting to change too much of this article” notice.

This is a smaller issue, but I think it bears mentioning: on the wiki’s dropdown menu, the “edit page” logo overlaps the text (I can upload a screenshot if anyone requests).

Agree about the text size in the sidebar on mobile.

Also, have just discovered that I'm getting the "Please disable your ad blocker"-message when not logged in even though I have TV Tropes whitelisted and am not having any issues with it when logged in.

Using Chrome on a desktop PC, if that helps.

Sorry to double post, but the random media button seems to be missing on Mobile

The most pressing issue, since the random logins has been fixed, seems to be the editing prevention notes and randomly edit locked pages which have brought up repeatedly. I have not been prevented from editing any pages I try to but have seen some of the new page locks others have mentioned. (using Firefox on a Mac, OS 10.13.4)

  • Attempting to preview page edits does not do anything.
  • Poor visibility of various features in Night Vision due to garish pale backgrounds with pale writing including my own most recent forum post (unless I edit it) and at least one mod post.
  • New formatting for bulleted lists makes for poor readability (at the ** to *** bullet range)
  • Redirects aren't working

"Quick update - we are compiling all the feedback here and prioritizing fixes, which will take us a few days to get through."

Okay, maybe I'm missing something, but if it's going to take days for the site to be fixed under the current update, wouldn't it be easier and faster to just roll the website back to pre-1.8?

I'm not a fan of this overhaul, and I would like the option of being able to use the old version of TV Tropes.

Derkhan, even before the update I got the disable your adblock message when I wasn't logged in even though I have no adblock. I think maybe if a page loads without having fully loaded the ads, adserver, and the datafeed of the ads, it thinks there's an adblock.

Hmm, thanks for the feedback, good to know. Didn't have that issue before.

[up][up][up] No, the site needs to be live to see if the bugs have been fixed and if they've caused any new ones. It's normal for such a process to take days. In the worst case, the devs need to comb the code line for line to see where the issue lies.

Also, you can test and beta a site as much as you like before going live, at the size that TV Tropes has there will be bugs and there will be issues upon launch. The best you can hope for is that those issues are minimal and the site as a whole works. Between the thousands of people using TV Tropes, there are almost as many different devices, O Ss, browsers and personal settings used to access it and no beta can test for all and every one of those. Instead of throwing hissy fits it usually does the job to state calmly where the issues are so the devs can work out the kinks and everything can go back to normal. The less people are screaming and taking up the devs' attention with pointless demands, the faster they can comb through to the actual problems and get to fixing them.

Hey, so thanks to the new update, I can't login or view TV Tropes properly on Chrome, and I have to resort to going incognito in order to do so. Others seem to be having the same problem as I, where the website looks like absolute shit on Chrome, so I'm relieved I'm not the only one.

I just got logged out for no reason I could determine.

I've thought a bit about this, and I think the things that really irk me the most design-wise are a) how ridiculously small the images have gotten, and b) the way the folders look now. The old ones stood out against the background, these ones don't and blend in instead, which... is not good design. The end result is that the site ends up looking like Finder window on an old computer, and that's not a particularly good thing.

That being said, the recent activity and newest trope launched being shown on the main page are good features. They don't come close to making everything else worth it, but insofar as they go I like them.

Oh, and the forum still can't seem to manage paragraph breaks very well.
