1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

@ Ghilz: I'm on my account right now and I can't even edit my own stuff! Where's the complaints thread on TV Tropes? Where is even the place where you can ask questions about the site?

Guys calm down, the log outs are probably just to fix anyone still under the "Logged in under someone else's account" glitch.

Didn't one of you suggest they do this exact thing earlier?

Wait what?

Last buglist from me since it's about bedtime here in Switzerland. Older buglists are in the header, new ones:

  • it seems like the bulletin form is expectingprotocol-relative URLs this the non-relative link does not work
  • the software is confusing the temporary edit lock that happens when you edit an article with the page locking system that moderators use. They need to look different to avoid confusion
  • Edit Profile is unstable
  • Timezone list in Edit Profile is ordered in a strange way. It's in alphabetical order, but the timezone names seem inconsistent.
  • are passwords being stored as plaintext? I think that would be a security flaw.
  • My avatar doesn't display while I'm on edit profile. I get an error icon as placeholder.
  • In Night Mode, Septimus' first list of complaints has white text on dark blue. The second list is white text on cyan, which is unreadable. (n.e may be an issue with mod mode)
  • Show Markup Help works, nice. The link to Extended Markup Help leads to an Inexact Title Page.
  • ads weren't good before, but now some of them are outright porn...
  • there's no way to go back to, say, the video game section from the Pokemon thread without scrolling to the top
  • when I save my post, it goes "Sorry, no discussion with that id exists"
  • Preview function for the forum only exists when you create a new post. Not when editing an existing one, or when creating a new thread
  • having a hard time telling which pages I watched are edited or not. Before it was marked as red meaning it got edited and not read and once it's checked out the red button disappears. But now that the site got updated, I can't tell which pages got updated and are all blank.
  • there's no longer an Edit button in the top left corner on a history page.
  • nightvision makes it clear that pinned posts on threads have a quirky piece of tape looking like it's holding them up. This is invisible unless you're looking for it when the site is white
  • Editing wiki pages above a certain size appears to give me an HTTP 500 error, or it just puts me back on the edit page, even though they're not also giving a "too big and should split warning".
  • Is there option to extend the time period of the new pages filter in Recent Changes? It's a real pain to check the new pages when the list resets at night,
  • When you search in Night Mode, the search results appear in a white box which can be quite blinding in the dark.
  • logged out and every spoiler is visible with no apparent way to hide them for non-Tropers (on my computer, at least). Clicking them like you used to be able to do also does nothing. It kind of defeats the purpose of Spoiler Tags when you can't hide the Spoilers.
  • Uh every time I try to make a new post, a previous saved draft I already used keeps appearing so I have to manually delete it each time.
  • Plus I seem unable to save any new drafts now.
  • The names on folders are not centered.
  • Clicking the profile leads straight to the main site page.
  • Wide Load should absolutely do more than just add a half inch of space on either side, especially when there's another half inch of space left unused.
  • The folders blend in too much with the pages they're on, especially when they're open. I don't want line breaks that blend in, I want buttons that stand out!
  • When editing To-Do Lists putting an apostrophe causes a "\" to appear in the edit preview between it and the letter before it.
(It doesn't show up when you actually edit though so it's merely weird instead of debilitating.)
  • new folder design, but I'm seeing it overlap the text above in a handful of places, like on the page for Star Wars, where I'm seeing the I-Q folder overlapping the paragraph for Functional Magi.
  • not a fan of going from dark grey and green to black and blue for background & text in night vision mode
  • the forums no longer jump to the first unread post on a page
  • the —— line doesn't show up on some wiki pages anymore unless there's an empty line between it and the next line of text/a header. But it shows up on others just fine without a empty line following it.
  • I liked it better when read threads disappeared from your watchlist - having them remain there is distracting.
  • you now need to open a separate page to view replies to a thread, which is extremely inconvenient
  • I just tried to open my profile in a new tab by clicking "open link in new tab" after right clicking my profile icon. It took me to the Add Post screen you see when trying to post in a thread.
  • the new CSS forces some very awkward breaks in example text to display longer URL links on their own lines
  • Marking boards as read isn't working for me
  • My main gripe is how headers are affected. It's white text on a light gray bar that make it damn-near impossible to see (night mode)
  • random logouts
  • They got rid of the green bar that appears when you have a new private message too.
  • Awesome, Funny, and Tearjerker pages now just share Heartwarming's pink aesthetic instead of the unique color schemes of yellow, blue, etc.

I'll ask another moderator to compile bug lists for the night, but tropers can do so as well.

The "Featured Trope of the Day" has changed for a third time. You'd expect something "Of the day" to last 24 hours.

Just got logged out again and my head is sore from the amount of bemused shaking. I agree with Catmuto. It is late where I am and I am going to bed. Hopefully I can wake up tomorrow to a website that actually works and a statement from the admins as to what was wrong with the previous version of the site and why this beta was considered acceptable to blight the people paying your bills with. So, I've seen this come up many times in the thread before, so I feel comfortable asking: Was this layout even bugtested at all? For something that was allegedly in development for months, it seems like it was rushed out the door in a couple of weeks. It can't be due to a deadline—this is a passion project for a bunch of nerds on the internet after all—so it really just seems more like Creator's Apathy.

follow-up on the flag/star TLP function, I've now found it. However, there's three distinct issues with it: 1. it only displays next to the name and laconic on the main page, not on the draft itself, which is the place where you're likely to think 'I want to watch this', 2. It's now called an upvote (shown as [tup]), which obviously has positive connotations when I might be following it for negative reasons (e.g. it got unlaunched), 3. IT DOESN'T WORK

[up][up][up] Apparently it was in beta for a while. I don't know how many tropers are in beta or how their testing is taken into consideration, though.

Also joining the 'logged out' train.

I have zero desire to do anything on the site but refresh until the old layout is back or these issues get fixed.

I know it was beta tested since I helped. I wonder if the problems encountered have to do with implementing the design on the site itself.

Quick update - we are compiling all the feedback here and prioritizing fixes, which will take us a few days to get through.

We deleted all session cookies, forcing everyone to log back in.

To many of your questions, yes, we tested as best we could, but this site is massive and many of you use older, or less common, devices that we might not have tested - we will get to those bugs.
