1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

At the very least I'd like the "open/close all folders" button to be moved back over to the left and made more visible.

Notice how this image has a white outline around it:

This is affecting all other images on this site, so is there a way to remove that outline?

The outline on the page is due to the previously reported image shrinking bug. The quoteright block is 350 pixels wide. The image no longer is that size.

@thatsnumberwang: It's disgusting. I'm past insulted at how bad this thing was implemented, I am pissed off. Now, I don't read the forums much, so I don't know if this overhaul was mentioned before it was being implemented (I'm assuming it was), but it wasn't for me.

Not only did this lead me to get worried when I suddenly couldn't log back in several hours back, THIS is what appears after that worry? And the wait? This... piece of... fugliness? My blackberry's Settings menu is prettier and more colorful than THIS. If they at least altered the folders back to how they were in the previous version... even if they are this dark blue, at least it would LOOK better.

@rmctagg09: That's been there for ages. *shrug*

I'm personally not a fan of going from dark grey and green to black and blue for background & text in night vision mode; makes an unpleasant contrast to me. Even regular text is unpleasant.

Subpages/tabs/whatever buttons at the top of the page (YMMV, trivia, that lot) no longer being solid colour is odd. I'm not sure what to make of the new folder design, but I'm seeing it overlap the text above in a handful of places, like on the page for Star Wars, where I'm seeing the I-Q folder overlapping the paragraph for Functional Magi.

I'm not sure if y'all got this or not, but I'd still like it if we went back to numbered pages for forum threads instead of typing a certain page number into a search bar.

So what's improved?

As far as I can tell? Nothing. This is the worst, most universally-hated site redesign I've seen since Youtube first implemented Google+ integration.

EDIT: Also, new report - the Night Vision "blindingly bright 'new post' color" issue is still happening, only if it's my post it goes away after I edit it. Discovered this on accident while correcting a typo in this one.

When I tried to log out from my Message tab it went to a different account and I saw someone else's P Ms. I didn't look at the name and tried logging out again and it logged me out. The profile pic was a character in a yellow wizard's hat (I don't remember the character's name). Has this happened to anyone else?

More of a Qo L thing than a bug but the forums no longer jump to the first unread post on a page, which sucks.

This is what, the third complete visual overhaul TV Tropes has had since the Kickstarter? I don't get the point of completely redoing the site this many times. All it does is disorient and frustrate. What was the point of making the previous layout if you were just going to throw it all away?

I half-seriously wonder if the edit-locking thing is in place to prevent people from adding this update to places like So Bad Its Horrible and They Changed It, Now It Sucks!

I have an issue in night vision mode. When I read a thread, the last unread post is highlighted. The problem is that in night vision, the highlighted post is bright-white with white text. This is unreadable in Night Vision if I don't highlight it.

Something I just noticed is that the ---- line doesn't show up on some wiki pages anymore unless there's an empty line between it and the next line of text/a header. But it shows up on others just fine without a empty line following it.

Complaints I have:

  • The forum posts are very cluttered now - I liked it better when the entire post was in a box.
  • The new folders for trope pages are...ugly. They don't really stand out, and just seem to blend into the page.
  • I liked it better when read threads disappeared from your watchlist - having them remain there is distracting. I'd rather not have my watchlist clogged up with stuff that hasn't updated in years.
  • On my iPhone, there's no longer a button to return to the thread watchlist at the bottom of the forum thread - I have to scroll all the way back up to get to it.

So yeah, sorry guys, but I'm not a fan. Now, I don't want to be presumptuous, since I don't know anything about website design...but is there a way to get feedback from users on the new design before it's implemented for everybody? I mean, maybe you were already doing that, but I personally find it hard to believe that people were fans of this.

Edit: Apparently, there was a beta, I just didn't know about it. My bad.

My previous post was just pure complaining, but here is an objectively worse thing if you want constructive criticism: on Ask The Tropers, Wishlist, and Bug Reports, you now need to open a separate page to view replies to a thread, which is extremely inconvenient. Also, when editing large pages, the text editor lags and is too big (so instead of the text editor's scrollbar, I have to use the main scrollbar to scroll down).
