1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

I think its pretty clear by now that the join date is just a generic placeholder, guys. Maybe the original dates are lost? I have no idea what their database looks like right now, but with those bugs, it does not bode well.

Senor Cornholio - The period before that was the Wild West days. You honestly wouldn't have recognised it. Troper Tales and page after page of creepy tropes about children and sexism fetishes are something that we were glad to lose. Those were examples of good updates.

The redirects don't work. Sometimes, when we go into a thread, it says it's "private"

Also, when I checked the liveblog page, the order of the liveblogs was fucked up. Like, changing the orders on the list didn't work.

A new bug list, old one:

Other problems:

  • uncovered spoilers are now only noticeable by having a dotted line underneath, and not being an uncovered 'box' of spoilers
  • but red links on the preview appear blue, making it harder to verify if they're written correctly.
  • The code for linking to a URL seems to not work on different parts of the website. For example, I can link a URL◊ just fine in this forum post (according to the preview option, at least), but trying to do the same exact thing in a crownerjust produces broken links.
  • the blue "This is the last post you read" overwrites the red "Moderator speaking in Mod-voice" post color.
  • I try to log in on Safari, the login box doesn't show up. (by Mr Media Guy 2; it works for me)
  • The final action/crowner icons are now put at the end of thread titles instead of the start, making them hard to pick out at a glance.
  • In the mobile version, the “show options” button on crowners doesn’t work.
  • Can someone please resolve the post number issue? As someone who has multiple forum posts bookmarked for easier access, this unnecessary change is just preventing me from accessing them, and it is driving me nuts.
  • On mobile, there is no formatting. It's literally black-on-white text and images if I'm lucky. No sidebars, no test boxes, nothing. (Demon Duckof Doom)
  • Every time we try we get the message "you're trying to change too much of this Wiki page", despite just trying to add a single trope.
  • In the Image List Link, the search buttons are not aligned with their text boxes.
Same issue for the search buttons in Trope Finder / Ask The Tropers / Bugs / Trope Launch Pad. Basically anything that uses the "magnifying glass" search button.
  • Some issues with P Ms. One, it seems like the red icon does no longer link to the message page. Two, it seems like it's counting both incoming and outgoing messages.
  • our avatars are now displaying in 80x80◊ when 100x100 was just fine in the old layout.
  • not seeing anyone's forum badges anymore. This is unacceptable, as people paid actual money for those.
  • Index tags disappear the lines between items.
  • The badges are the same size though the images are smaller, which means they're stacked one on top of the other vertically and push the next post down quite far.
  • The editing page no longer has a separate scrollbar for the editing window and for the page as a whole.
  • and apparently the forums don't recognize paragraph breaks anymore
  • Also, has the maximum width for images been shrunk? I noticed that most images in general have shrunk, but those in character pages have really shrunk. As in, most of them have gotten so small that it's barely possible to see details
  • Further to one of my previous posts, which mentioned indented text as an aside, if you have a note inside double or more (—>) indented text (which is already barely readable), the note text is literally too small to read (e.g. by the page quote of Telenovela).
  • Also, new forum search! I kinda like how you can search posts containing a certain word now... but would be nice if they showed in chronological order or had an option to, in general more options than just restricting it to "search by forum" Also "search post by user" (at least for yourself) would be nice
  • Cannot view my profile like I could before by clicking my profile icon in the top right. The menu extends past the screen. I tried zooming in and out, but that didn't do anything.
  • The new forum search looks like a cool idea, but needs work. Searching for a phrase in quotes treats the quote character as a word in its own right, and returns all posts that contain a quote character.
  • er, if I try to scroll down the page, it scrolls the edit window (scrolling the edit window is obviously fine).
  • The new layout for related pages puts each namespace under its own heading, leading to every trope that is big enough to merit splitting the page getting its own heading.
  • the green ticks on unread threads were a really handy visual cue compared to the blue/grey distinction that is harder to see.
  • can't get crowners to display once they've been hooked to a thread. Like, they're auto-collapsed, but the show-hide button won't uncollapse them.
  • custom titles don't seem to be working anymore. They work on the pages themselves but all links show the uncustomised titles.
  • Redlinks for some namespaces seem broken. I see redlinks to nonexisting pages in the Literature and Creator namespaces as red as usual, but ones to the Music namespace are shown as blue instead of red.
  • No line breaks in the edit history, making it difficult to tell what's going on.
  • Desktop Chrome is still broken for me. The front page’s formatting is broken to the point of unreadabilit the “login” button either does nothing or on rare occasions logs me in as another troper.
  • Level 1 and Level 2 headings look the same, as seen here. Also there's no space displaying between separate quote "paragraphs", as seen here.
  • The profile menu (Profile, Messages, Logout, whatever else there was) seems to open upwards instead of downwards, and the menu is cut off by the top of the page.
  • the buttons from before are missing and are instead hidden under the "..." thing
  • posts are no longer encapsulated in boxes
  • post number is no longer displayed.
  • there's no longer any checkmark icon for threads that have not been read recently.
  • When I try to use "tab" to switch from typing my username to my password, it freezes up and pressing enter again makes me unable to enter anything. (Senor Cornholio)
  • add star/flag option on TLP seems to have disappeared?
  • page histories, separate bullet points are no longer separate and lump together into a wall of text.
  • The 'random trope' and 'random media' also end up kinda running away from the mouse, settling in a place where only the bottom parts of those graphics are visible.
  • light grey used for people's location and relationship status is so pale it's really hard to read without straining or switching to nightvision mode
  • sometimes I add a post, it save, and it brings me back to the version of the thread before I posted, without my post on it. I need to reload the thread (either by going back and re-selecting it) or refreshing for the thread to show my post.
  • I tried to Follow pages (including this forum) and it hasn't saved any of them. (Emerald Sky)
  • The page where cut requests are processed does not work. I tried to process some cuts after the update, only for it to do nothing when I confirm the action. Not only is the item still listed, the page also remains.

I'm thread hopping, but I did read Septimus' first list of complaints. I'm gonna list my own complaints, because even if they've already been taken note of, I feel like it's worth registering that I also have them.

  • Edit Profile is unstable. I managed to change my display options, however while I was making further changes, I got logged in as another user (huh, nice to meet you gravelord or gravedigger something (nico? nikto?)). I was then logged out, but not before maybe changing their timezone, though I think the change carried over to my user. I tried making more changes, but gave up. Speaking of which...
  • Timezone list in Edit Profile is ordered in a strange way. It's in alphabetical order, but the timezone names seem inconsistent. There are cities in my country tagged under Americas/, there are some by themselves, and my country's timezones are explicitly listed by themselves.
  • While logging in was disable, I tried changing my password (because I didn't know logging in was disabled, as there were no warnings; I discovered logging in was disabled through TV Tropes' Facebook page). I don't think it changed, however I went to Edit Profile to try to change it back, and afterwards there was a pop-up message with "Your password was successfully changed to [password]", where [password] was my actual password. This worries me: are passwords being stored as plaintext? I think that would be a security flaw.
  • My avatar doesn't display while I'm on edit profile. I get an error icon as placeholder.
  • In Night Mode, Septimus' first list of complaints has white text on dark blue. The second list is white text on cyan, which is unreadable.
  • Show Markup Help works, nice. The link to Extended Markup Help leads to an Inexact Title Page.
  • Save Draft button kinda works. It takes me to a blank page with the text "Sorry, a thread with that id doesn't exist" or something similar, and when I return it saved the first few lines of my post, but not the rest.
  • This is supposed to be a bulleted list, but I don't see any bullets EDIT 2: the bullets do show up when I post, but not when I click the Preview Post button.

EDIT: and now there's a third list. And my post's background is cyan too, I can't read it either.

EDIT 2: [down] Noted.

Haven't experiencd any bugs (yet) but there's almost no indication when a thread has been updated and there's no way to go back to, say, the video game section from the Pokemon thread without scrolling to the top. Both of these render the forums hard to navigate.

I'm having a hard time telling which pages I watched are edited or not. Before it was marked as red meaning it got edited and not read and once it's checked out the red button disappears. But now that the site got updated, I can't tell which pages got updated and are all blank. I also hate how you have to find the tab that opens all tabs. Please change the site back.
