1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

When editing a page, you can theoretically scroll down the page or the edit window. However, if I try to scroll down the page, it scrolls the edit window (scrolling the edit window is obviously fine). Sometimes this is just for a few paragraphs, sometimes it makes me scroll to the bottom of the edit window before it will scroll the page — which is needed to hit 'save'. Obviously this is a major issue when the page you're editing is long.

On a separate note, editing seems to work fine for me so far.

This new layout is going to take some getting used to.

I actually remember people being fairly optimistic about the last update. It wasn't everyone (hell I don't even think it was the majority) but it was certainly more then there are right now.

Is there an ETA for how long until the bugs or ironed out, or are they going to just roll the website back to pre-update? I only ask because from what I've gathered so far, the update more or less broke the whole of the site.

Someone just hacked into my account.

Edit: Never mind, I got confused by the text suggestion in the title and location section of my profile

All of my attempts at editing are automatically canceled with "You are trying to change too much of this page" even if all I did was fix a typo.

I'm with Discar—there are way too many bugs with this new layout for it to be live right now.

I don't recall the old update from a couple years ago having any major issues, it just had some minor inconveniences.

The new layout for related pages puts each namespace under its own heading, leading to every trope that is big enough to merit splitting the page getting its own heading.

It's not just the Fire Emblem page. All the YMMV and Moment pages I've seen are edit locked.

Agreed, everything seems smaller. It's a little hard for me to see.

I don't understand why it even blocks you from editing too much of the page. You mean I can no longer mass spell and grammar check an article without logging in and out multiple times? That is just discouraging housekeeping.

At the very least an option to go back to the old colors? This dark header and white pages hurts my eyes. And Night Vision isn't any better...

Seriously, what needed to be changed?

thatsnumberwang, I agree. I like doing some housekeeping on some pages, especially if I notice several new tropes I could apply.

Can we please, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY, get the old GOOD UI that actualy WORKED and did not look ABSOLUTELY HIDEOUS back or at least have an option to change it back ?

There's literally over 5 pages full of complaints here that range from the UI being bad* to probably HUNDRENDS of minor glitches and inconviences TO PEOPLE BEING ABLE TO LOG INTO OTHER PEOPLE'S ACCOUNTS AND VIEW THEIR EMAILS ?

WHY, WHY DID YOY YOU HAVE TO "FIX" SOMETHING THAT IS NOT BROKEN !?

I'm also throwing my hat in the "old layout please" or at least a rollback option like what youtube has, so those who like this layout can choose this one and those who don't can stick with the old one.

In particular the green ticks on unread threads were a really handy visual cue compared to the blue/grey distinction that is harder to see.

I think the edit amount restriction is to discourage edit-warring. Note the word 'think'. It's ill-thought out at best, but that's the only even semi-logical motive I can imagine.

All of the pages now seem to be blocked from editing, at least for me. Is this just part of the overhaul?

1. The link to this thread in the Bulletin is broken.

2. The lack of a visible cursor while writing/editing posts is super annoying (Firefox).

3. I miss the "back" button at the bottom of forums threads that would take you back to the subforum you're in. This was very useful when reading long threads, so you don't have to go way back in your browser if you're archive binging the thread.

I agree with the others. This isn't even an issue with the look of the site and more of the bugs being so broken that it takes away any interest in using TV Tropes. If it's at all possible, the old layout should be switched back until these bugs get sorted out. The site is practically unusable in the current state it's in.

How is it that this update took months to years to come around, yet feels like a two week rush job?

I've also noticed that I can't get crowners to display once they've been hooked to a thread. Like, they're auto-collapsed, but the show-hide button won't uncollapse them.

I mean no offense when I say this, but I want to be honest—I really don't appreciate how the "new" (as in "have been here for a couple of years") admins have been treating the site. It seems to me like they're never satisfied with what they've got, putting out redesigns and new layouts regardless of how appealing or functional they are for years on end. Rushing out an Obvious Beta website with glitches upon glitches, glaring security flaws, and more than a few unnecessary changes on top of that seems to be the last straw for a lot of people.

(Also the "new post" background makes the text of that post completely unreadable on night mode.)

I'm not sure why they decided with the new design, but I don't think that's as important as the myriad of technical issues that it has had so far. I'm no computer expert(I barely even qualify as a novice), so I won't judge the people who decided on this. However, I also tend to be rather impatient and would like the problems this new format has to be solved as soon as possible. Can I know how long that would take?

Redmess - Yes, I was thinking that too.

Midna - Yes it does. I am having to refresh my page to read my own comments.

Also, it is annoying that the header is no longer sticky, so that I have to scroll up to get to the wiki controls.
