Anyway turns out the box office third week drop was worse than Bv S.

  1. Ant Man And The Wasp Quantumania grossed 12.5M on 3rd 3-day weekend at US #Box Office Terrible Legs so far, harsh -60.1% drop from last weekend. (vs #Eternals 11.1M, -58.7% #Fifty Shades Of Grey 10.6M -52.6%). In contrast Bv S got a drop of 54percent. It's unlikely this makes more than 450-500 million. And this film is definitely not making even as much as the first film. Like this is an utter rejection by the audience.

Why are you using Batman v. Superman as your barometer? That movie made $873m. It outsold Thor: Ragnarok, Wakanda Forever, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It was a pretty fucking successful film.

A better (and more poignant) point of comparison would be Ant-Man and the Wasp. The estimated box office total for the weekend is $12.5m. If this estimate holds, then despite opening $30m stronger than A&W did, Quantumania's third weekend will actually fall far short of A&W's $16.5m third weekend.

This will be the first weekend where Quantumania's box office take fails to surpass A&W's. And with Quantumania falling short this early in its theater life, it creates the possibility that Quantumania may not outgross A&W in the final tally.

That said, $450-500m feels too low. The movie's already at $420m and has ~13 weeks still ahead of it.

Also, its international percentage is picking up. It was at ~49% first weekend but has risen to 55%. It's not dropping as fast internationally as it is domestically.

Oh because that was the previous lowest box office drop for a superhero film in its third weekend. Don't get me wrong that did do better.

Superhero film box office expectations from the big studios is weird. I know that the Sony was disappointed in the box office of Amazing Spider-man 2 which went past 700 mil. I know that WB considers Batman v Superman a disappointment despite what looks like a giant success. Studios either are not telling how much money was spent outside of the production thatll deter the profit margins or are setting their expectations off the rocker, which could likely be both.

Im wondering how much Disney expected out of Antman. Even though he’s obviously not a frontrunner superhero, this was the start of phase 5 and Disney had enough faith for their next Avengers movie villain to show up. It did recoup double its budget, but I am 50/50 on it being considered a hit by them. Less expecting them admitting that it wasnt

Dont let the ads that say its the number 1 movie be an indicator, that should already be said..

I kind of wish that MODOK had been the sole Big Bad of this movie, as opposed to this movie being used as a vehicle to introduce Kang.

That or Kang's role should have been as a minor Greater-Scope Villain with little screen-time the way Thanos was used in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Its funny but with how understated the multiverse is it makes me think this part being called the "Multiverse Saga" is a bit unfitting.

It doesn't really feel as major as it should compared to the Infinity Saga since that was a more simple relying on the Infinity Gem macguffins.

There's little actual multiverse travel and it doesn't really go all in on the concept of multiversal versions. Like it brings to mind the problems with Doc Strange 2, the dimensional hopping is only to like two universes and the alternate versions aren't in the movie much.

[up][up]Pretty much.

If I were to picture a rewrite with MODOK as the central villain, perhaps he could be used in respect to Scott and Cassie's arc. Scott's afraid of Cassie following his steps as a lawbreaker, Cassie's gung-ho for the vigilante life. But encountering the man they thought dead, who broke into their home and tried to murder a child, has them facing their fears and confronting how dangerous a superhero life really is. Yet like ants, they're stronger when they work together.

This is actually an awful box office. Films have to make 2,5 X their budget before they get any profit. To cover advertsing costs as well as the fact theatres get half of the money from sales. It making only double its budget is terrible. It's meant as the tent pole of their new phase too.

I do wonder how Marvel is actually going to react to this.

They've delayed The Marvels could be connected or not.

Given the pipeline they've got going there's limited amount of course correction they can do.

Seems to me they've fallen into the same overbudgeting trap that doomed Dc's Justice League but there's not much they can do about that for things already in production.

There's only so much they can do when they have so many projects actively in development. Armor Wars has been in development hell for quite some time.

It really depends on how they'll handle new stuff after Kang going forward. Loveness seems pretty confident on how he'll handle the future Kang stuff so its unlikely he change stuff due to this or anything like that.

Theirs no way it reaches that. It already got blown away by Creed III (Go Majors.) and in the following weeks we have: Scream VI, John Wick 4 and Super mario bros.

I think Feige will reconsider Loveness with this film losing money.

Y'know, I do agree with the general consensus that having M.O.D.O.K and Kang in the same film might not have been a good idea the more I think about it.

It's sort of like having Fawful act as a henchman for Andrew Ryan: they're great characters on their own, but they really shouldn't be in the same universe, much less the same room.

[up] Doubtful, since Loveness has mentioned he's already writing for Kang Dynasty and is working with Daniel Destin Creston.

Fawful: This villain team up has all the quality of a blind deaf golf player who stinks at this game. And Andrew Ryan is the bad breath of that loathsome player.

Im just here waiting for the guys wholl say “but Black Widow and Eternals werent big successes too” when those movies had the special circumstances of being released during a plague.

Do you think that we reached the breaking point with audiences? I know that there will be people wholl defend anything major franchises related for some reason and this site is already filled with MCU lovers, so finding objective opinions here is a death sentence. Though even audiences arent receiving this movie at least as well as theyre supposed to, I think Disney and Feige would find that concerning. No, this isnt a “MCU is doomed” idea but box office doesnt lie.

Too early to say if its breaking point. BP 2 did well, Antman 3 did not. If it turns out to be the start of a pattern then maybe it is time to discuss an MCU breaking point but not yet.

Doubtful since I would trust James Gunn enough. That would be a really funny idea of Gunn sabotaging the quality of the movie so he can make the upcoming DC movie look better by comparison.

Guardians like BP 2 still has the acclaimed main creator still going at it

And Guardians is one of the more acclaimed series under Marvel's banner

If Gunn's nails this then he probably has the strongest trilogy in the franchise. Alongside the Captain America and Spider-Man series.

It helps that the first two movies don't have a crossover event sandwiched between them like many of the other MCU trilogies.

Guardians 3 is pretty much guaranteed to sell. The first movie made $771m on a $170m budget despite being a dangerous and experimental concept, and the second movie made $869m on a $200m budget. It's been a pretty consistent franchise so far, with no major shakeups behind the scenes.

I'd be stunned if it didn't sell well.
