Is Aerith being the one to summon the Lifestream at the end from something the Compilation? Because nothing about that is brought up in FFVII's ending scene.

Well, if they went the “ghost who will inevitably leave once her task is finished” route, that’d be a good time to leave.

...Is there anything in VII’s established canon that would suggest that’s possible?

Sephiroth is kind of like a Lifestream ghost in a way, though he has to act through proxies and his carrying on is very strictly an evil thing.

They could have her show up as some sort of antithesis to him.

The proxies he acted through were Jenova cells, due to how he sort of fused with Jenova when he fell into the Lifestream with her head. I'm not sure what equivalent Aerith could use similar to that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Kitase said in an interview the only reason he doesn't want to bring Aerith Back from the Dead is that it would take away the impact of her death?

Growing up, it's like a civil war, don't turn away, it's something you can't ignore...

How about expand more about the Cetra and show how her mother became the last one?

So, perhaps showing off Shinra hunting down the Cetra and trying to convince them to lead them to the Promised Land, but Ifalna going into hiding? And then Gast stumbles upon her and agrees to keep her a secret, since all he wants to do is study her, but then Hojo finds out or something?

I just want to know more about the Cetra and what they would have looked like.

I'd assume they'd have looked like humans.

We see Aerith's mom in game and she looks normal. Plus Aerith shows no outward inhuman trait.

I am wondering if the Cetra were Human Aliens or some fantasy version of that. Or just humans who had special abilities.

They were humans with a very close link to the planet,so yeah humans with special abilities and advanced technology if the ruins are anything to go by

Suddenly really tempted to reinstall 7 and do another playthrough, though the lack of mouse support is a put off

I do wonder when they almost made Sephiroth and Aerith siblings, if they were going to make him a Cetra as well.

Well, recall that originally, Sephiroth and Aerith were lovers, then siblings, and then completely unrelated.

I kinda like the lovers angle idea, personally. It could have given some extra weight to the Aerith's death scene, but alas...

I kind of wonder what would have happened if they kept them ex-lovers. I even ship them in an AU where he isn't evil and didn't kill her.

Well, it would add some extra weight to her death, for one, give murderous love triangles a whole new gold standard, and maybe give them a chance to reshape Sephiroth's character a bit from just being an insane super soldier with an oedipus complex.

I think I would have liked to see the angle of the guy who thinks he's a Cetra/Ancient, and doesn't want to kill any/everyone, but sees it as the only way to save the planet, while Aerith's arc would have been her trying to find a peaceful way to stop it by empowering Earth with the Holy materia or something. But of course, Sephy kills her because he thinks it is the only way.
