A Fluff Ringer
#1: Jun 16th 2018 at 7:16:27 AM

The year is 1934.

In a truly baffling turn of events, a town known as Frankfurt an der Oder has... disappeared. No, "disappeared" is a rather big understatement. Rather, a giant ominous castle grew right on top of it, swallowing the hapless city and everything gathered in it. Overnight; a populous, prospering town was but a distant history. The populace and any guests died in the castle's emergence and those who survived the catastrophe were reportedly slain by horrific monsters in a span of next few days; examples included their own dead, dogs breathing fire, animated armors... the selection was as terrifying as it was diverse. Not a single man survived...

...except for eight people that were gathered in that town at the moment of castle's emergence. Knowingly or not, they were in possession of certain items that made the castle emerge in the first place: the remains and wordly possessions of its master, one Dracula. By pure happenstance, those eight people happened to be in Frankfurt at that time; the combined power of these remains was enough to give birth to the dreaded Castlevania. Protected from the catastrophe and ignored by lesser monsters, they could breathe with relief... for now, as no doubt more savvy followers of the Dark Lord would appear to reclaim the remains and have their Master emerge into the world to sow seeds of chaos and terror.

But those would not be the only visitors to the castle; the freshly appointed 3rd Reich would no doubt want to clear the situation out and profit from it somehow. The same applied to agents of Second Polish Republic or even the distant countries like Soviet Union or UK. In the era of growing unease, perhaps this was the fabled Wunderwaffe to solve all problems...

With this intro I would like to welcome you all in my third attempt at a Castlevania RP. The general principle is slightly different from the first one, where you were special agents and qualifieds to enter Castlevania. Now, you're really just a bunch of unfortunate (or fortunate) schmucks that were at a wrong place in the wrong time. Perhaps you are just an ordinary citizen of late Frankfurt, a tourist from afar or even a paranormal investigator who is more into the magical realms, but the fact remains as such: you were woefully unprepared to have a giant castle emerge all around you. The general goal might be the usual action-packed adventure or it might be more of a survival horror, depending on what kind of characters show up and what the players would desire.

Signup sheet template:

  • Name: Goes without saying.
  • Age: Ditto.
  • Appearance: Both a written description or a picture are good.
  • Personality: The ins and outs of your character.
  • Possession: The very reason you're not yet another zombie roaming the castle and its outskirts. Somehow you have a bit of Dracula on you. You might be aware of what it is or you might be completely clueless that your shiny new ring is in fact Dark Lord's wedding ring from days past. These items not only protect you from lesser monsters - they simply ignore you or, with a right nudge, might even fight for you - but also grant you some sort of power. Go wild, but keep things reasonable power-wise: you might chuck a fireball, but it probably won't be the end of days fireball. As for the possessions themselves, here let your imagination run wild: it might be a body part, but it might also be an item of sorts or even a part of an item (say, a piece of cloak sewn into your shirt).
  • Skills/Powers: Your own individual skills you can use to fight off monsters or just survive. Those likely depend on your character's individual backstory. If your character dabbles into supernatural - or maybe even is supernatural - they will also have some magical powers or enhanced attributes.
  • Equipment: Any items on you that are not your Possession.
  • Backstory: Who are you? How did you acquire your Possession? How did you end up in Frankfurt on the day of castle's emergence?
  • Other: Anything else you might want to add, such as character quirks, their favorite movie genre, political inclination etc.

A few headlines on the character sheet:

  • No canon families.
  • Though you might know your way around magical/martial stuff, you are no vampire hunter or anyone halfway qualified to combat Dracula's minions. A low-key/hobbyist mage or vampire hunter is probably fine, but the point is: you're in way over your head.
  • As the number of Possessions suggests; there are only eight spots for characters, mostly so I can manage everybody efficiently. Bonus characters might be accepted, but their case for survival must be really, really good.

Accepted characters (6/8 slots):

  • Name: Shannon Hawkins
  • Age: 15
  • Appearance: Shannon is a girl with light brown eyes and waist-length black hair that she wears in two thick fishtail braids. She wears a tan duffel coat over a white button-up shirt, a black pleated knee-length skirt (with bloomers), knee-high woolen socks, a pair of flat-heeled leather boots, and a pair of black rectangular wire-rimmed glasses. She is 5'1'' and weighs 115 lbs.
  • Personality: Shannon is generally an inquisitive and quiet girl, which makes people think she is shy. She like to ask a lot of questions about things, and doesn't like it when she's not given a good reason to do something. If she feels that something is afoot, she will be the first to go and see what's up. She can be quite audacious and bold, given the right reason.
  • Possession: Somewhere along the line, one of Dracula's old capes got repurposed by an unscrupulous duffel coat manufacturing company into coat lining. The coat containing the cape was bought by Shannon's parents who gave it to her as a Christmas present.
    • When she puts the hood on, she obtains the ability to pass unnoticed by most things. This is not camouflage or invisibility—whatever is looking at her is tricked into thinking that she is nondescript/belongs there.
    • Putting on the hood also grants her the ability to see in low-light conditions. However, this will not work in pitch-darkness.
  • Skills:
    • Her (well-off) uncle taught her how to use a gun and ride horses, but it's been a while since she last practiced. Trying to use these skills for the first time in such a long time will no doubt involve some amount of fumbling.
    • She can ride a bicycle fairly well.
  • Equipment:
    • Swiss Army Knife: A gift from her father. It has a 3'' knife and various other useful attachments.
    • Antique Lighter: Another gift, this time from her (irresponsible) uncle. She barely uses it, but she still carries it around.
  • Backstory:
    • Shannon is a schoolgirl from America whose parents were immigrants. Being quite poor at the time, they bought a duffel coat (at a marvelous bargain price) for her at Christmas. Unbeknownst to them, the coat was lined with bits of one of Dracula's capes.
    • As their financial situation improved, it was suggested that they go to Frankfurt for summer vacation. They arrived, and the rest is history...
  • Other: N/A

  • Name: Ardath Bey
  • Age: Several thousand years old.
  • Appearance: He typically looks to be a gaunt, somber man with dark eyes, Covered in heavy clothes, a wide brimmed hat and medical bandages. Underneath those bandages he is a mummy, and looks as one would expect a dried out walking corpse to look.
  • Personality: Ardath is for the most part, a patient and thoughtful man. Even to those who cross him he will generally give another chance and prefers to frighten to defend himself rather than fight. In his life he was a polymath and advisor so he prefers to carefully plan out his course of action or consider his word before making any moves.
  • Possession: The Eye of Dracula: A curious fossilized eye that Ardath found on his target. This eye can be used as if through a looking glass to see more about the world including blood flow in the living, hidden phantasms and magical energies.
  • Skills/Powers:
    • Undead: Adrath is of the undead, he cannot be killed in a normal way, however the fact that he is a dried out corpse animated by magic means he is very susceptible to fire. Also the fact that he relies on magic rath than muscle for pwoer means he holds slightly above averge human strength.
    • Polymath: Ardath as a polymath was skilled in several areas, his preferred ones being architecture and medicine but he also had some skill in astronomy, engineering, poetry, religion and magic
    • Magic: This was one of his disciplines in life but never one he was chiefly concerned with. So he is competent but by no means a master. He primarily has spells of warding and protection although he does have some offensive spells that allow him to use gusts of wind. Ha also devised a spell that allows him to project his thoughts directly to someone, allowing him to simulate speaking.
  • Equipment: Aside from his clothes and the Posession he has a golden necklace that was worn by his late wife. Also in his chest there is a talisman that allowed him to rise and follow his tomb raiders. If it is destroyed entirely he will die again.
  • Backstory: Ardath was a priest, polymath and adviser to a Pharaoh in life during the Golden Age of Egypt. When he died he was mummified and left with a cruse to rise and hound his pursuers if they took anything from his wife's body. A necklace was taken and after some adjustment to the world that he awoke to find himself in he tracked them to Frankfurt (claiming to be a burn victim sightseeing in order to not raise questions). When Ardath caught up with them, he managed to frighten the thieves such that they gave him everything they had of value. He reclaimed his wife's necklace, caring nothing of the other objects but he stopped to examine a small, glowing stone in the pouch. Holding the Eye then is likely all that saved him from being turned into one of Dracula's thralls. Now he is trying to find his way out of the hellscape he finds himself in and back to Egypt but it seems that the Castle and the surrounding forest are quite insistent that he stay.

  • Name: Hadrian Corby
  • Age: 32
  • Appearance: Hadrian is a reedy irish-man with short brown hair, a goatee and a boxer's build. He's got a black-eye and a nose that's clearly been broken before. He wears a white button-up shirt under a grey sweater and suspenders. He wears a set of leather gloves. He's got a single tattoo of an eagle on his shoulder, a remnant from his time in the military.
  • Personality: Hadrian's a criminal, short and simple. He's shifty, snarky and really just wants to get out alive, maybe even make some money. That said, Hadrian's not heartless and generally will try to help others, though usually with the pretence of demanding a favour from other people.
  • Possession: The Oculus Obscura: A monocle that has a strap, allowing someone to use it like an eyepatch., giving off a cool blue light. It has the ability to reveal the turth, burning away illusions and, perhaps if the legends are to be believed, lighting ones way.
  • Skills/Powers:
    • Skilled Boxer
    • Accurate Shot with a gun
    • Knows how to bribe folks
    • Is a competent lockpick.
  • Equipment:
    • Lockpick
    • M1911
    • Wallet
    • Keys to an old Car
    • A flask of ice water.
    • Pair of Brass Knuckles
  • Backstory: Hadrian was the son of an immigrant who went on to die in World War One, grew up in New York, became a boxer, got involved in the mob. He got paid to win a match, paid more to lose a match, paid even more to put his opponent in the hospital. He chose the third option and promptly had the other two offer-makers try to kill him. He fled to Britain and was offered an obscene amount of money to take some dumbass lantern to someone in Frankfurt. Cue everyone becoming fucking zombies.

While everything here seems fine, I do have to question how the lantern is Dracula's possession. By "possession" I generally assumed either something that Drac would wear or something that was his body part. Can you elaborate on that and/or change the form of it into something else?

There are also some issues with the formatting. Use double stars rather than single ones as far as items and skills are concerned.

  • Name: Marian Graves
  • Age: 35
  • Appearance: Marian dresses in well-maintained gear for travel. She wears an old gray German military coat, but it has a pair of distinct patches sewn into the back—the last owner's bullet wounds. She wears a pleated black skirt that goes to just above her kees and only one combat boot, because just below the knee on her right leg she has a sharp peg leg made of dark brown wood that always looks freshly varnished. She has curly black hair, kept short, and a heart-shaped face with a pointed chin. She's reasonably in shape, aside from the peg.
  • Personality: Marian has seen enough to give credibility to everything. Her suspension of disbelief is very low and rather than become jaded the great possibility of things she's already seen has kept her earnest and believing in whatever new wild shit there is for her.
  • Possession: YOU NOW PROSSESS DRACULA'S STAKE. Marian's peg leg is a surprisingly sturdy and sharp piece of wood, and is in fact a stake that was once used to kill Dracula. She found it on a traveling merchant's cart for cheap and replaced her old peg with the new one. Now inside Dracula's castle it's like the weapon has a will of its own, giving Marian an intuition and speed with kick-based violence that she'd never had before. Chun Li, Inazuma Kicks, Red Hot Kicks, stuff like that.
  • Skills/Powers:
    • Marian has worked a dozen different awful part time jobs. If it's paid poorly, she probably knows how to do it. Mostly maintenance and brute labor though.
    • Marian actually does know a little magic, a wayfinding charm. If you chant the magic words over a pendant you wear when you sleep, the head of the pendant will float up and tug you towards the last place you slept.
  • Equipment:
    • A pocketwatch she found and was going to pawn later
  • Backstory: Marian was born in an interesting time to say the least. With Germany in ruins postwar, work and money was hard to come by. She went through half a dozen jobs before she was 20, none of them particularly useful or actually profiting long-term. The neurotic kid turned into a neurotic spinster as she kept scrabbling, and it only worsened over time. Disease laid her low multiple times, but not even losing her leg in a factory kept Marian down. Just as she thought shit was about to get good and she got a solid job as a courier, this whole castle appeared overnight. Cool. She set out to try to find anyone who was still alive, and maybe get rid of all the bedeviled creatures attacking what used to be her home.

  • Name: Howard Dyer
  • Age: 27
  • Appearance: Like So
  • Personality: While he tries to carry himself as a straight laced professional at all times, Howard is more than a little bit paranoid and is set on edge fairly easily, especially when around supernatural energies and places. Howard's research into various forms of the supernatural, as well as other darker entities has left him with both an existential dread of what may come, as well as an innate desire to ensure that the worst doesn't occur.
  • Possession: The Heart of Dracula'. Acquired within a long abandoned tomb during Howard's numerous travels throughout the world, this ever-beating heart is incredibly unnerving to behold as it quite literally beats like a regular human heart, just without the whole "pumping blood" thing involved. Though disgusted and moderately terrified by the object, Howard has held onto the abhorrent organ as a means of self-preservation, as Dracula's heart beats faster and harder as creatures and beings of great supernatural power grow nearer and nearer. This however, is quite hard to notice unless one is directly holding or looking at the heart, which Howard is quite reluctant to do.
  • Skills/Powers:
    • Howard is not a combatant, at all, however he is something of a scholar on supernatural subjects, due both to his extensive education at Miskatonic University, as well as serving as one of the school's assistant librarians. While he isn't a complete expert in the field of say, monsters, Howard's knowledge on dead languages and magical rituals is extensive, even if he doesn't practice magic at all. Additionally, while his knowledge on the subjects isn't exactly extensive, Howard is familiar enough with Dracula to know that he's been menacing the world for, much, much longer than most would expect, though he's not exactly familiar many facets of his existance, such as his castle.
    • While not exactly an ace behind the wheel, Howard is an experienced driver.
  • Equipment:
    • A leatherbound journal containing Howard's extensive notes on various supernatural phenomena and what little he's been able to scrounge up on Dracula.
    • While not a crack shot with it by any stretch of the imagination, Howard carries a revolver and 18 silver bullets on his person, mostly out of fear of what beasts he might encounter in the german countryside.
    • Howard's cane contains a sword with a steel blade, but he's not much of a fencer, so once again, this is very much a case of paranoia over practicality.
  • Backstory: Born and raised in Arkham Massachusetts to a wealthy family, Howard's early life was a fairly bland and simple one, full of generic childhood adventures and such. Things didn't start to get weird until he enrolled in Miskatonic University with an Archaeology Major. At first, all was well, Howard excelled in his studies, particularly those pertaining to ancient religions and burial places, and as such, Howard was invited to join some of his professor's Colleagues in the field. During one of these field outings, Howard encountered his first signs of Dracula when delving into an old tomb of indeterminate origin somewhere in the Scottish countryside. Within Howard and his colleagues encountered some rather unsettling murals of various dark and depraved rituals as well as a handful of equally unsettling artifacts, once again of indeterminate origin, though these various stone tablets and ancient scrolls instead depicted scenes within cyclopean architecture and heavily featuring creatures that could only be described as 'alien' once again, engaging in depraved rituals. Doing their best to do away with these artifacts and murals, the group came across a box within the tomb that seemed to be the only thing within the tomb untouched by the ravages of time. Opting to take the box back home to the United States for research, Howard and co. arrived back in Arkham only to find a still-beating heart within the box. Horrified, the professors and archaeologists wanted nothing to do with the box and its contents, but, ever curious, Howard wanted to figure out the origins of this anomaly, and, after much research in the Miskatonic libraries, set off to Europe in an attempt to get a feel for just what it was. Now located in Frankfurt, if only temporarily, things are starting to get strange once again for Howard Dyer...

  • Name: Haim Ehrenberg.

  • Age: 64

  • Appearance: What do we have here?

  • Personality: From childhood Ehrenberg has strived to do his best at whatever he does, he was born a hard worker, and even as he grew older that part of his personality never changed, he's a serious man who you'll rarely hear whine, he'll endure mental hardships, though obviously not the physical ones, often just happy being alive, a trait instilled in him by his family. Haim is not paranoid of others, but he is definitely not the most trusting sort, considering the times, trust is not something you easily give, you never know who wants to beat the crap out of you for who you are.

  • Possession: Bloody Tears:

    • Haim's possession is an Alchemy vial found in an old Chemistry set from the late 19th century, the old vial used to be a part of Dracula's lab, and in fact, holds a drop of the vampire's blood inside, giving way to many weird results in the experiments Ehrenberg did with it as a child.

    • In the Castle the vial has the fantastical effect of making magical liquids out of monster parts and magical ingredients that are put inside, Haim can make a potion to restore someone's vitality or one that can give someone extraordinary strong and perhaps even a mysterious poison, it all depends on the ingredients mixed in the vial.
  • Skills/Powers:

    • Dr. Ehrenberg: Haim Ehrenberg has a Doctorate as a physician, he knows his medicines and he knows very well how to treat sick people and the injured, though the fantastical injuries that the hordes of Dracula's servant can cause might be much for just a normal doctor.

    • General Education & Scientist: Striving to be the best he could at whatever he did, Ehrenberg was an honor student through and through, he knows his history and his German is eloquent however more than average studies the road to healing people is learning living things in general. Haim was educated on biology, chemistry and animals though they are not his specialty, he is well versed in zoology, with minor veterinary skills he picked up along the years.

    • Ashkenaz: Speaks Yiddish and will call you a nudnik if you're a brat.

  • Equipment:

    • A suitcase that carried Ehrenberg's personal items, the only thing he kept after the emergence of the castle, no way to really carry all the big bags that the family took for the journey.

    • Some food meant to be carried for the journey

    • A diary and a leather-bound research Journal.

    • A wallet keeping some pictures of the few buddies from his university days.

    • A pocket watch with an old picture of him with his wife and young children.

    • A pen with his name on it, given to him by his kids.

    • A pipe and some tobacco he uses to deal with stress as well as a lighter.

  • Backstory: Born in Munich to a Jewish family of immigrants from the Pale of Settlement as a child Ehrenberg was always taught to live to the fullest, to prove to those think he doesn't deserve to live wrong by always doing what he did in the best way possible. Haim excelled in academics, though he met disdain from peers, no one could say he was anything but an exemplary student despite some teachers trying to make his grades worse than they rightfully should be. With emancipation allowing Ehrenberg to reach to university where he studied to work as a physician, eventually working in a hospital despite being Jewish, he married and made a family, keeping them financially safe through the post war German depression, though they sometimes struggled, they never went hungry, making him the ire of many, among them those who would soon rise to power.

  • Noticing the rise of the Nazi party in his country, he tried to bring his family away from Germany, contacting distant relatives of his living in America he started the journey towards the brave new world, on the way they stopped at Frankfurt, holding onto a childhood memory, among the possessions he insisted on taking with him was an old chemistry set that was given to him as a birthday gift when he was a child, he kept it with him as adult he kept the old vial from it which he used countless times as a child, experimenting and figuring things out, eventually as he turned adult and was a busy man, he started using it in privacy, as something that would give him focus, on that night the Ehrenberg family was staying at an old Motel in the suburbs of Frankfurt, and as Haim was dealing with paperwork involving moving out of the country for good he fell asleep, holding the vial in his left hand. When he woke up, the castle emerged, and his family was nowhere to be seen.
