(Forgive me if this is the wrong place to put it.)

Lupin III: The Italian Adventure is an anime, produced by a Japanese company, as a sequel to a Japanese franchise. Yet, for some reason, it's listed under western animation. It premiered in Italy before Japan and they were involved in production to some extent. But that's ultimately about it. It's an anime.

It premiered in Italy before Japan
That's the metric this website uses to determine the difference between Western Animation, Anime, and Animation; what country first released the work? Every episode was released in a Western country before being released in Japan.

If you go by style, then Avatar: The Last Airbender would be animé. If you go by which studio did the most work, then Bob's Burgers would be animé. As a sequel to a Japanese franchise, Voltron: Legendary Defender would be animé. If you base it on copyright, then Robotech would be Western Animation.

But the page does have to be moved, since this is the most recent official English release, making the new name Lupin The3rd Part IV (with The Italian Adventure as a second subtitle).

Lupin VIII would face the same sort of analysis. If it was first released in France, it would be in the Western Animation namespace. If it was first released in Japan, it would be in the Anime namespace. Since it wasn't officially released anywhere, I'm pretty sure we can choose which namespace, so we'd naturally create the Pilot Episode page at Anime.Lupin VIII since the franchise is Japanese.

Two questions:

  1. Are we sure that "first released" is the rule?
  2. Are we sure that '"first released" should be the rule?

I'd prefer if we had some safeguard against Short Run in Peru situations. I'm not comfortable with calling (for instance) Space☆Dandy anything other than anime, despite the majority of episodes having aired in the U.S. before Japan.

I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.
