Dunno about "a lot", but those that do rival or surpass it will do so by very different metrics. One Piece is IMO easily the best at what it does.

Which makes it incredible that Kimetsu no Yaiba did the impossible & actually surpassed OP in sales last year.

Well taste is subjective yeah, but I think its ignoring lot of great works to speak of shonen as if there were just couple good ones

[up][up]Well, KnY is in vogue right now because of the anime, AND it's really good at doing what I would consider to be something sufficiently different. It's more Phantom Blood than Dragon Ball, and a far more focused and smaller scale story to boot. Plus, One Piece had its big boost period a few years back when we were at the timeskip and everyone were catching up to vol 60 and reading about the Marinford arc.

[up] There are an absolute shitload of good shonen of course, I just think OP is easily in the top 3 of all time.

Man, Vinland Saga went from water to wine after switching to a monthly release.

Wait, when did the transition happen? Because the first few chapters, the ones pre-flashback were kinda meh, but that is the only one big jump in quality I remember. Did it switch magazines that early?

Anyway, I certainly don't consider One Piece to be one of the bast shonens of all time, even if we limit the term to "battle shonens". Even back when I loved OP I would still point out Fullmetal Alchemist, Hunter x Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho as superior and nowadays my opinion of the manga is even loer. It is impressive it is still going strong for that longnote , but that doesn't mean that much on its own. It is actually a detriment, in my opinion, the longer a work is, the better it has to be to be worth it. And One Piece is not that good.

Then there are the manga that have been going on for even longer than One Piece.

Such as Golgo 13 even if its not shonen. Started in 1968 & hasn't stopped since.

Vinland saga began serialization in April of 2005 and switched to monthly in December of the same year. Not sure what chapter that is.

[up]So it was weakly for 7 to 8 months, meaning it would have had around 30 chapters. That would be in the middle of the "running away from Thorkel" mini arc. The arc ended strong, but it started strong a well, so I am not sure I am seeing any particular jump in quality.

It was probably for the best regardless. The weekly schedule is brutal and frankly I don't think anyone should follow that, it is not good for health.

[up]x3 True, but it's also a monthly comic with, it seems, little in the way of actual continuity.

Seems very episodic is me point, not much of an endgame to speak of.

[up]x4 I won't say anything about FMA as I haven't read it yet, and I agree with Yu Yu Hakusho as long as we are only talking about The Dark Tournament Saga and ignore everything that comes after.

HXH, however, I've always found very overhyped. Not bad, just doesn't really live up to other people's opinion of it.

Yes, I know that's redundant, but people these days tend to equate "overhyped" with "monumental garbage", and I feel the need to clarify.

[down]Fair point but it still doesn't seem to be as much of a challenge as working on a sigle, continuous storyline is. For me, someone who isn't a mangaka.

[up] True but I'm not sure how someone can just keep making a series like that for over 40 years.

I'd assume you'd eventually get tired of it if your not at the point of just constantly recycling the same mission types over and over again.

Maybe not story-wise, but if you look closely the shadowing became noticeably more detailed between volume 4 and 5, especially on the faces.

FMA is one of the very few shonen I'd give a 10/10, alongside OP.

I’m really enjoying reading Radiant, the French-born manga. It’s surpisngly pretty good.

The MC Seth grows a hell of a lot more than most shonen MC’s do.

[up][up][up]That is true. The art does become better after that.

I do like everything that comes after actually. On average, more than the Dark Tournament, in fact. That part of the manga is closer to HxH so we clearly have different tastes on that regard.

Fwiw I was only really talking about the art in regards to Vinland Saga. I haven't made it far into it myself so I can't speak to the writing, just that the art became more complex and detailed after switching to monthly.

Also Hx H is a top 3 battle Shounen easily IMO, it and FMA are my top two, not sure what I'd put at third.

Btw, does One Piece actually run weekly still on a consistent basis? I heard Oda had doctor's orders to rest more regularly because the weekly grind was taking a massive toll on the guy, but I dunno if I'm misremembering.

More or less - he gets a week off every month or so just for his health, but otherwise it's weekly as usual.

It seems that this work gets a lot of Adaptation Expansion, is the anime a better option than the manga as a result?

No , most of the stuff is in the manga, just introduce later on. The only new detail is the musical since you can't make a musical manga. I think the manga still better due to the comedic timing and the pacing since it take it time to introduce new elements and have more subtle foreshadowing

The review of that movie from that one weeb series I have zero interest in.

Hmmm, I wonder if this is what weebs who don't read One Piece feels like.

...nah, it's probably way worse for them.
