They have the rights to the Xmen too, so Boom Boom can be there.

It's times like this that I get reminded I'm part of a minority that finds Nextwave more weird than funny or even that amusing.

I rather enjoyed it for being the only other notable piece of media to reference Boom-Boom besides X-Men Evolution.

[down] As well as bringing Monica Rambeau back into the public consciousness, that too.

I do like some Boom-Boom(and especially some Spectrum), but I remember finding the relentless silliness and Comedic Sociopathy mostly alienating. Maybe it's to do with using established characters that I was already fond of in ways that make them unrecognizable. Yeah, yeah, Rule of Funny and all. Nothing I hate, but not my thing.

Here's the thing with Nextwave: it is an absolute parody of superhero comics and everything that entails. Like, this is what Warren Ellis wrote when asked how he conceived Nextwave:

Which brought me to this: taking just a ton of those old characters and ideas that were currently useless to Marvel, throwing them in a pot like the potboiler catmeat they were, and just driving them down over high heat until you had something pure. Or at least concentrated. While watching FLCL on repeat. Just boiling and mixing and throwing more old Marvel ideas in there and remixing and sampling and remixing some more. Taking out all the sticky tendon and unmelted bone of, you know, plot, and character, and continuity, and anything else that people think should belong in superhero comics.

And that would be my contribution to the conversation. There’s a quote that’s stuck with me for, oh, 25 years, that I’ve used a few times to describe a certain kind of work, and it was probably never more fitting than used for NEXTWAVE. It was my motto for the job as I was writing it. Nik Cohn describing “Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard:

“A glorious burst of incoherent noise.”

I doubt I ever lived up to it, but that was the target.

i have no idea if i’ve answered the question NEXTWAVE IS LOVE send

Like he stated, it barely has a plot and barely has characters. The continuity makes no sense. The title of the book is Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. when, in fact, they are fighting against H.A.T.E. "It's people posing in the street for no good reason. It is people getting kicked, and then exploding. It is a pure comic book, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. And afterwards, they will explode."

Wow you know someone's serious when they reference FLCL.

[up][up] I know. I'm pretty sure the TPB has a preface that drives the point home.

The MCU has been okay with lightly teasing its conventions, but generally just as a quip or two. We’ve yet to get a full blown parody series with true fourth wall breaking.

We will prolly reach that point eventually.

With the ever increasing backlog of films, the MCU is constantly gaining self-referential material for an actual parody product whether TV show or movie.

Ooo, probably not for me, then.

I basically use the superhero genre as a substitute for what I'm actually into: modern-day fantasy/scifi hijinx. I like alien invasions. I like wizards in trenchcoats and jeans. I like vampires. I like demon lords who drive Maseratis and secret agents with M16s having shootouts with time-travelers shooting pew-pew laser guns. I like people who shoot heat rays out of their eyes. I like time-traveling cyborg dinosaurs or whatever.

Not actually a fan of capes and secret identities and "Oh no, I need to run out on my girlfriend and go fight a super-battle but she can't know!" drama. I tolerate it 'cause it's the cost of entry for this wild Fantasy Kitchen Sink that Marvel has crafted and there's so much less of it than there is over in DC. When I read the comics, I mentally replace the word "superhero" with "peacekeeper" and "supervillain" with "criminal" or "terrorist" or something. Because superheroes and supervillains aren't a thing and it hurts my brain to read the characters calling themselves that.

When you get down to it, I ravenously consume superhero media, but I don't actually like, like, superhero media stuff. If that makes sense.

The MCU's been amazing for me, on that note. So much of the awesome superhero universe stuff I love, so little of the traditional superhero archetypal tropes that I dislike.

Nextwave isn't about that, actually. Again: Ellis stripped all plot, all characters, and all continuity from superhero comics, distilling it down to...well, let me show you: this is a double page spread that is part of an issue that is made of double page spreads. The main villain of Nextwave is Dirk Anger, a thinly-veiled parody of Nick Fury who has the best lines. Every single character is out of character, because that's funnier and they also have great lines. All the mooks are literally made of broccoli. And Monica Rambeau is the best.

The book actively defies description. It is not about capes and secret identities; nobody uses a superhero name aside from the Captain and it's probably because he forgot his real name. They all fly around in a ship called the Shockwave Rider fighting against Unusual Weapons of Mass Destruction made the Beyond Corporation. The comic's motto is "Healing America by beating people up." And this was their cover when Civil War was coming out.

...yeah, I have absolutely no idea what is happening in any of those pages.

Except the "robot brain needs beer and I want to die" bit. For what is clearly a response to something super gross happening to Machine Man, that's a pretty funny reaction.

I think later comics kept Nextwave's take on Aaron, because that seems pretty in-character for the guy, but I only know him from comics that came out after Nextwave. Civil War was my jumping-on point.

I'm less familiar with Boom Boom. I think the only thing I remember her from is the X-Men: Evolution animated adaptation. She, uh, she wasn't great in that.

A clever detail.

Thanos grabbed Cap's hand instead of Mjölnir because Thanos knew he wouldn't be worthy.
