Food and Food Culture

Go To

So I was browsing through OTC and noticed we don't have any threads dedicated to food. I figured this was a shame since food is an important aspect of life and culture that helps people connect with each other. Plus, we kind of need it to live. So I figured, why not start a thread to let people here talk about food related topics?

I'll start things off by asking this: what is the most "disgusting" food you ever ate and enjoyed despite its reputation?

Personally, I've eaten things like organs including chicken testicles, stinky fermented tofu, and most recently durians. And I've enjoyed all of them. Especially the durian. Maybe I'm just one of the people who isn't bothered too much by the smell, but it really is just as good as its fans claim. The taste really is remniscient of almonds too. Now I want to try eating it in a cake or icecream.

Sadly, so is San Pellegrino. At least Topo Chico is owned by Coke. Not that I drink mineral/sparkling/soda. I'm a soda junkie but I can't stand plain mineral/sparkling/soda water.

Ugh, same here. For some reason I just can't stand sparkling water. I don't know if it's because I've basically been conditioned to expect a sweet flavor to come with the fizz, even though I haven't drank soda in over a decade, but drinking sparkling water still gives me the ick.

Eh, I like a glass or two at the end of a meal. Wouldn’t drink that on the fly over a good ol’ soda though.

[up] [up]Can't stand it. My partner prefers sparkling, I have to drink still. Makes us really awkward in restaurants.

I'm not against other sparkling drinks - flavoured tonic water or the more bubbly, less-sweet kombuchas, etc. Just don't like water that way.

I only have fizzy/sparkling water in my house. Granted, it's mineral sparkling water from the source, it tends to be milder than Perrier (that one is undrinkable), and it's locally owned (so many brands in Italy...)

I like carbonated water just fine. It’s been my go to beverage after giving up soda.

Can't stand unsweetened carbonated water myself, at least from the brands I've tried like La Croix or other similar ones. Has a bitter taste to it, and I'm very sensitive to bitter flavors. Might be the dissolved CO2 in it making the unsweetened acidity feel bitter to me. I also can't stand standard alcoholic beverages or straight black coffee for similar reasons.

What is ginger ale anyway? It sounds exotic here.

[up]It's some vaguely ginger-flavored soda that's usually used to ease one's tummy.

Personally, I'd compare its flavor to that of Lemon-Lime soda like Sierra Mist, but slightly...ginger-y.

Overall it's not really my favorite soda, and I don't think I've seen anyone say that they love it. It's, well, mostly a home remedy for one's tummy. Not outright bad-tasting though.

It's a soda flavored with Ginger. Most commercial versions of it is just your standard carbonated sugar/fructose corn syrup water with a ginger flavoring, either natural or artificial. Though you could craft your own by boiling ginger, sweetener, and zest into a concentrated ginger syrup and then add it to soda water and would probably get a cleaner ginger flavor.

And lots of people like it as a home remedy for an upset stomach, because the ginger can help with nausea, bloating and upset stomach, while still being a soda.

Ah so it's like 7-up here. It's a local "home remedy" here when someone has an upset stomach, they drink 7-up.

There's also ginger beer, which is basically ginger ale's big brother and hits much harder with the ginger flavor.

Interesting story about a Fish & Chips store in New Zealand, but it's managed by a Cantonese-speaking family. The husband has a strong NZ accent.

I like F&Cs, especially when I dip them in Sriracha/spicy ketchup. Only fish my mom won't let me eat is through Dory.

I prefer chicken as the entree to pair with fries but am fine with fish.

Also it does seem confusing that chips refer to different foodstuffs in America and the UK, even if both are usually potato products.

Usually prefer either teriyaki sauce or mayonnaise for dipping in fish & chips or just plain fish fillet and even eating them w/o sauce depending on how well it's cooked though when it comes to breaded fish tempura is still my personal favorite.

Tartar sauce is the standard fish and chips dip where I'm from. Not sure how common it is elsewhere though. We can be a bit unconventional with our condiments around here (we put cream cheese on hot dogs, after all).
