Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

[tup] Azure duo

Here's some upcoming EPs from an anime I previously discussed on the CM thread.

What’s the Work

Hyper Police is a 1997 anime based on a manga from 1993-2004, lasting for only one season.

One part police procedural, another part sitcom, another part furry apocalypse series, Hyper Police takes place in the far future after most of the human race has been wiped out. Now a wasteland, the rest of the world is inhabited by monsters, Yokai-looking creatures.

Set in Japan, we follow the catgirl Natsuki, as she and her team of anthropomorphic bounty hunters fight all kinds of crime, while dealing with racist rival hunters, unique criminals, and many types of wacky hijinks the writers can think of. More comedic and lighthearted in comparison to the more violent manga, there are a few characters I feel make the cut.

“Say Goodbye to a Cold Jail Cell” is the tenth episode of the series. Here, Natsuki is wrongfully arrested and sentenced to water mage Po’s prison, which freezes their prisoners and erases their memories if they’re ever captured again (could be worse; in the manga, they’re instead castrated).

Desperate to escape, Natsuki teams up with two other prisoners to help her get out. Thing is, they’re not as helpful as she thought.

Who are They?

Chameleons A & B, exclusive to the anime, are a pair of escape artists who make a living breaking prisoners out of captivity, with a 100% success rate.

What do they do?

Getting inside Po’s inescapable prison, the Chameleons trick Natsuki into helping them head for the prison’s inner power plant by claiming to have been framed by sadistic policewoman Fonne. Able to escape and head for the plant, the Chameleons reveal their true motives: having broken Natsuki out of her cell, the two hope to destroy the plant by activating her anger-based electricity powers and free every prisoner inside; the two claim that even if she tries to stop them with her powers, she’ll detonate the plant regardless, meaning they’ll win no matter what.

The duo almost succeed, if it hadn’t been for Natsuki’s pet cat Bob’s sudden arrival. Her partners Tommy and Batanen also show up to take care of the two. Chameleon A admits their loss, but he and B try to go out fighting; despite camouflaging, Tommy and Batanen are able to find them and punch them in the face, knocking them out as a result.

Are they charming? Intelligent? Able to think on their feet?

Chameleons A and B possess sharp thinking skills, using their charm to manipulate Natsuki into doing their bidding, while taking advantage of their camouflage abilities to sneak past guards. The two also have a successful history of escapes, showing that they’re not only professionals, but experts as well.

And yeah, their deaths are a bit silly, but the show’s primarily a comedy, and they at least admit defeat before they're knocked out.

Are they bastards? Too much of one?

The two Chameleons are criminals who plan to release every prisoner from Po’s prison, using the promise of freedom to trick Natsuki into helping them. They’re the episode’s primary antagonists, with Natsuki herself feeling bitter anger towards them over their deceptive tactics.

But they’re also far from the worst crooks in the show. Some villains are way worse, like the extremely racist police superintendent Tokijiro.

Verdict?

Yeah, I think they keep

Ok, let's see. Sure to Diabolico, Frax, Vestra, Merak, and Asimov.

Here's my last one from the recent Shadowlands expansion for World of Warcraft. She was also one I once told Lighty in PM that I wasn't going to do since her story had no closure, but the last patch added some closure in a pseudo easter egg.

Who is Ve'nari?

Ve'nari is a broker, a race of energy beings that work in cartels and act as wandering traders for the infinite afterlives of the Shadowlands. She led an expedition for Cartel Ve into the hellish Maw to lay claim to its exotic resources, but the expedition found themselves under constant attack by Jailer's Mawsworn. Ve'nari betrayed and murdered the rest of her expedition to both make her stay safer and to hoard all the resources for her own goals. She proved clever and resourceful enough to not only build her own traps and modes of transport in the Maw, but also to learn to use the Mawsworn's resources to her own advantage to move around in secret and avoid the constant gaze of the Jailer's Eye. While unable to escape the Maw on her own, she made contact with the Maw Walker and helped them to rescue various allies in the Maw in exchange for becoming her partner. Becoming her partner in this instance means doing all her dirty work and gathering valuable Stygia for her while she stays safely in her hidden sanctuary.

As the Maw Walker did work for her, their relationship grew to one of genuine mutual respect and Ve'nari taught them all seven rules she used to stay safe in the Maw. Always have an escape plan, keep a low profile, trust is earned and must be worked for, always keep a list of threats and work to eliminate the greatest, be audacious when necessary, always keep your security up to date, and betrayal is inevitable even from, and especially from, those close to you. As the player's reputation with her grows, she offers to sell them some of the crazy devices she has cooked up to quickly traverse her hellish home (and these were vital because you couldn't mount in the Maw before the first patch). In exchange for their continued support, Ve'nari even provides the player with a device to rescue souls from the Maw and access to a portal that takes them directly into the Jailer's tower. She eventually entrusts the player with a final mission at max reputation which sees the player investigate a mysterious broker device found in the Maw, which all turned out to be a gambit on her part to track down and kill the last Cartel Ve expedition member that could reveal her treacherous nature.

Come the first content patch and the Jailer pulls Korthia, the city of secrets, into the Maw to raid it for information. The player turns to Ve'nari to help them get past the Jailer's armies to reach Korthia, which she does in exchange for a future favor and on the sly placing a beacon in Korthia creating a permanent pathway between there and her haven. Ve'nari immediately calls in this favor and has the player stealthily plant signal devices in the Mawsworn's main fortress so she can spy of them. This coincidentally reveals that one the demigods on Azeroth, Helya, had captured some of Odyn's angelic Val'kyr and was turning them into Mawsworn in the fortress. The player again came to Ve'nari later to get her help in creating a horn that could summon the Val'kyr into the Maw and invade it. She assisted them in binding the horn to the Maw and told them the best spot to test it and break the barrier surrounding the Maw. Not coincidentally, while the barrier was broken, this also resulted in the Jailer's Eye attacking the party which was then injured enough to be forced back to the Jailer's tower. This not coincidentally gave Ve'nari more or less free reign to move around the Maw as she saw fit.

In Korthia, Ve'nari learns the Jailer seeks the entrance into Zereth Mortis, where the super duper ultra high gods called the First Ones created the Realm of Death. Ve'nari also grows interested in finding a way there, but surprisingly lies back and merely watches the Maw Walker's allies goes to Zereth Mortis and end the Jailer once and for all. This was where her story ended and seemed to go nowhere, at least until the very last content patch of the expansion. If players return to Ve'nari's refuge after fully completing the storyline, they'll find a projection of her stating she went to the powerful Creation Catalyst in Zereth Mortis to use all the Stygia they had brought her to complete her master plan. If the player goes to the Creation Catalyst, they find Ve'nari. They find her corpse that is. Players that maxed their reputation with her will find something feels off, and, sure enough, five real life days later she sends them a message stating she faked her death to get Cartel Ve off her back and found a way to leave the Shadowlands. She intends to wander the cosmos at her leisure, content that while she never had to betray her new ally, she felt no regret for using them this entire time.

Is she magnificent?

Ve'nari is a genius to put it lightly. She is resourceful beyond measure and manages to not only survive but thrive in literal hell thanks to her sharp mind. She also became fairly popular among the player base for her playful banter and often sharp wit, and in the end got everything she wanted. I'll link a video giving off some of her voice work from a quest below, as her voice acting was among the best in the expansion and goes a long way to displaying her more charismatic side.

Is she a bitch?

While Ve'nari ultimately doesn't betray the player, she absolutely uses them and helps them only when it benefits her and never out of kindness or compassion for those trapped in the Maw. At the very least, betraying and her murdering the other brokers in her expedition instantly throws her over the bastard/bitch line.

Final verdict?

Oh boy, here comes the tide of effort posts. Since we never really know when each other are gonna drop them, we can only hope we don't get a glut. Let's try to stick with only 1 or maybe 2 more within the next couple of hours so discussion and votes don't get too swamped.

So because you guys suggested, sure let's take a look back at Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and see if Caellach counts.

Who is Caellach and what does he do?

Caellach the Tiger Eye is a former mercernary in Jehanna and Joshua's former comrade turned one of Grado's 6 Imperial Generals, personally hand-picked by Emperor Vigarde himself. A man who wants to become king, Caellach built up his reputation in the mercernary run Jehanna where he eventually join Grado when they began recruiting people for the war effort. Given the task of destroying the Sacred Stone of Frelia, Caellach prove himself to be as dangerous as he is as a scroundel, frequently amassing armies for the heroes party to face while behind the scenes. While in the services of Grado, Caellach alluded into intetions of betraying if he benfits them, particularly the original generals and Vigarde.

Being praise for his successful work in his mission, Caellach was then given the task of invading Jehanna, which Caellach reluctantly took having wanted to stay away from his old life. During the campaign, Caellach made frequent trips back in Grado and in the nearby kingdom of Carcino, to keep up with what's happening in the background and trying to establish connections for his future plans as king. Whenever his presence is around, Caellach also shows his charisma by rousing the soldiers in battle to face either Eirika's or Ephraim's party, further motivating them and making them more dangerous in their levels.

When Eirika's army starts to approach Jehanna, this is when Caellach begins to throw down and actively tries to stop her. Sending his lieutenant Aias to deal with her army, Caellach used this opportunity to overthrow Jehanna while his subordinate holds Eirika and the back-up Rausten army off with his tactics, either ending with his demise or Caellach killing him when he is forced to retreat to cut off his ties with his old life. Having Jehanna in his control after using the spurred feelings of Queen Ishmaire's trusted servant Carlyle to manipulate him into overthrowing the army of Jehanna, Caellach used this chance to destroy the Sacred Stone while leaving Carlyle at the mercy of Eirika's army, granted as a master swordsman and formerly Joshua's mentor Carlyle does serve a mighty roadblock that gave Caellach enough time to destroy the Sacred Stone, although he was reluctantly force to kill Ishmaire when she refuses to cooperate.

Regrouping with Valter's army, Caellach works with his fellow general against the player's chosen army, and thanks to the surrounding desert and the massive forces with them, they are able to corner the party and give them one of the hardest levels in the game (No seriously, desert level plus massive armies are a match made in Hell), and if it weren't for the last minute intervention of the other playable character backing-up the main army, the two could've dominated then and their. Being prepared for a fight, Caellach also equip himself with a strong loadout including a Tomahawk for mages and a Silver Axe for up-close, while also taking a Hoploon Guard which prevents him from getting hit by critical hit, making him incredibly difficult to defeat with his main enemy, his former partner Joshua relies on it, and depending on the route the two either have a friendly battle or a bitter confrontation for what happened to Ishmaire.

In the end, Caellach is slaine at the end of the battle where he does face his death with dignity, only lamenting he didn't become king like he wanted to.

Is he Magnificent?

Hell yes, Caellach is not only a renown and powerful mercernary turn general, he's also a ruthless ambitious man who came so close in achieving his goal of becoming king, which is impressive when he started of a mere sellsword. Being one of Grado's more competent generals, not only was Caellach was one of the few who successful defeat a kingdom, overthrowing Jehanna and destroy its Sacred Stone, he would've conquered it if it weren't for Eirika and Ephraim's intervention. Add in that he remain a credible threat with his ruthlessness, charisma to draw the best of his men, overall badassery, and you can see why Caellach had the stength to nearly have a crown in his head.

Plus as a villain, Caellach is a smarmy yet incredibly entertaining antagonist. He's a scroundel and he knows it, but he still plays it off as a likeable rogue with ill intentions, which in comparison to the more vile villains make him far more entertaining and likeable compared to his competitors.

Too Much of a Bastard?

Here's the thing, Caellach is a scroundel, has no qualms taking and killing what he needs to achieve his goal of becoming king of Jehanna, but despite all that especially when compared to his competition like Riev and Valter, Caellach is far better. He doesn't resort into unnecessary cruelty like those two, his worst act is killing Queen Ismaire after she captured her, but to be fair his ambition was to be king so there was a purpose and she was not willing to reveal where her kingdom's Sacred Stone was, leaving Caellach no choice but to kill for not cooperating and he didn't seem to enjoy it either. That said in comparison to Valter sadistic massacres and Riev plan to plunge the world to darkness, what Caellach does is nowhere as bad as them, to the point he himself finds the two of them despicable.

Plus unlike the two, Caellach can at least be cordial and professional when he has to. While willing to taunt Selena, he's still the most approachable between them, and the people who follow him do seem to do it mainly for his charisma, unlike fear for the other two.

And as we see with Joshua in the Ephraim route and even his confession in Fire Emblem: Heroes, he can be friendly when he finds someone useful and does willing to share his glory with them, so at least he does some good, which make sense when it's stated he does have a genuine honor code. Also it explains why he's given a hero title despite his actions, because for all his faults he does still technically qualify for what a war hero is.

Final Verdict?

Thinking about it, this guy has a pretty strong case for being an MB but I'll leave it to you guys.

Got the writeups down, how do these look?

  • Azure Striker Gunvolt:
    • Merak, "The Slothful Conjurer", is one of Sumeragi's seven Swordsmen, representing the Deadly Sin of Sloth. Touted for his brilliant mind, he is put in charge of the subaquatic base, which is infiltrated by GV to put a stop to his alleged plans to build an armed submarine. Using his Wormhole Septima, he repeatedly disorients the hero, making traversing the stage trickier than it would be otherwise, and allows the base to flood, still with his men inside, so that GV would drown, surrounded in his biggest weakness. Later showing up after his death and eventual revival, he kidnaps Joule and makes a swift exit, being defeated twice by GV but putting up a good fight each time. A lazy and entertainingly droll genius with the brains to outwit even the likes of Teseo, it is no wonder that Merak is one of Nova's favourites.
    • Asimov is the second Azure Striker and the leader of the SHEEPS team. Acting as a kindly, charismatic and somewhat quirky mentor and father figure to GV, having taught him how to use his Septima in the past, Asimov assists GV in his missions as he takes down Sumeragi's Swordsmen one by one. Once their leader, Nova, is defeated, Asimov reveals that he was manipulating GV all along, and that he really wishes to take over Sumeragi, kill off humanity, and create a world for Adepts, as one who has suffered greatly under the horrors of Project Gunvolt. He wishes for GV and Joule to rule as the king and queen of his Adept world, but defeated Copen and took his gun in preparation for GV opposing him. Almost killing him with ease when he does, Asimov is stopped by a revived and empowered GV, but not without giving his surrogate son the fight of his life. As he dies, Asimov genuinely commends GV's strength, before warning him that Adepts and humans will continue to fight, and he will be caught in the crossfire, a prediction that would soon come to pass.

Alright guess it's time to finish Time Force. With one of the best Sixth Rangers in the franchise.

Who is Eric Myers /Quantum Ranger?

A college friend of Red Ranger Wes Collins, Eric grew up dirt poor with no one to look out for him but himself. He decided he wasn't going to let that stop him. At college, Wes befriended him but Eric couldn't understand why he wouldn't use his connections to love up in the world.

Anyways Eric arrives in episode 10, where he now is the leader of the Silver Gaurdians, a Private Military Contractors group founded by Wes' father Mr. Collins to take care of Silver Hills issues with Mutants. Companies that want to pay up for protection can now get help from the Silver Gaurdians. Anyway Wes ends up revealing his identity to Collins and Eric as the Red Ranger.

Eric discovers on one of his missions that their is a Morpher In a dig site allowing its user to become the Quantam Ranger. Eric carefully sneaks off with it from the Mutant Brickneck and hides it. Discovering it has a shield on it, he hides it till he can find a way to get that off. Him and Wes end up fighting a horde of Cyclobots and a blast frees the shield. He than becomes the Quantam Ranger. Taking on Brickneck he bests him by a bunch of cool moves like dropping to the floor to shoot his legs and take him in.

Anyway his morpher which talks informs him off the Quantasaurus megazord which he can control. Him and Wes follow Commandcon into the past to find it. Eric ends up splitting off and blasts Wes away so he can seize it for himself. Later leaving him to die (no really) when he chases after Commandcon who has it. He does come back for him at the last minute and then when their in the present drops him out of the plane well he goes deal with this. Anyway Wes asks to take back the Morpher to save the city but Eric refuses and duels him for it. Eric beats him and later shots off the control collar on the Q Rex zord and takes in Commandcon with his new Zord.

Anyways a peaceful Mutant named Notacon is released, Eric wants to kill him despite him not having done anything. And chases after him to destroy him for being a Mutant. He later tricks and suckerpunches Wes to distract the Rangers. Right when he's about to finish him, Trip stands in the way and makes him release that uh it wasn't right. He later uses the Q Rex zord to keep in Notacon in one place so Trip can get his mind control collar off.

Anyway he later aids then against Nadira and Klawlox using some of his own tricks to defeat the later well you know taking all the credit. Their is also a strange incident where he tries to get Wes kicked off the team by having Collins have the time force rangers work for him. It uh doesn't work.

In the Quantum Secrets, Eric is taking care of his pet birds when he lets a little girl Rose play with them. He's attacked by Conwig who threatens her if he won't let him gave control of the Morpher. Conwig uses it to to terrorise the city. Eric jumps into the river to get away but notices him from thee tech is from the year 3000. Jem saves him and he tricks her into revaling she's from the future like he suspected. She asks that he join their team but well he refuses as he works alone. Conwig creams the team and Eric arrives and outraces the Q Rex zord to knock out the controller and Morph. He then takes in Conwif after saving Rose from him.

Anyway from here, he becomes more of an occasional helper if you will. Using the Q Rex zord to help them defeat Mutants. Anyway, after Venomark poisons the city and he is going to give the antidote to an old lady, Venomark arrives and attacks him. Eric asks to take this one in by himself I'm due his battlizer to outrace him and outmanoeuvre him.

He later helps the Rangers through various means with lots of smart tactics like the legs stuff I mentioned in Miracon's ep or outplaying gunslinger Serpicon by beating him in a quick draw. He later takes care of Tronicon well the rangers are busy with Frax.

Anyway in the finale, it's revealed we'll fight Doomtron and that the Trizaryium crystals within it and the Q rex are reacting badly, creating time portals that could rip the city to pieces. Eric is convinced to call it off even though without the Q Rex the city is in deep trouble. Anyways he and Wes save each other and Wes asks him why he's such a dick to him. Eric reveals it and also the two bond as blood brothers. Fighting their way out of their base that Ransik is attacking Eric using his surroundings to escape. Anyway, Eric takes an attack meant for Collins and Wes, he gives him his Morpher to defeat Doomtron.

That was fatal for his Sentai counterpart, but PR doesn't do that lol so he survived and returns in the crossover now as a legit friend of Wes's' and they help beat the Mut Orgs. He returns one last time, for now, to beat the revived machine empire in forever red.

Magnificent?

He is proto-Vergil due to having the same actor. A dick at times but so damn cool. Like he drips bad boy action. He can think of new attacks and strategies on the fly. He's an expert marksman and fighter who can use his surrounding. And come up with interesting strategies to beat enemies. All well looking cool.

' Bastard?

Alright, so Eric is one of the few morally grey characters in the franchise. He repeatedly attacks Wes who hadn't really done anything to him and in one case nearly left him to die, he tries to kill Notacon, and he even gambles ye fate of the city. Heck, he was only hired to protect paying customers. And tries to get Wes kicked out. To be fair this might be kind of tame for a darker franchise but this is PR where that stuff is unheard off. Like to o be fair he becomes a more moral character later but he never loses his competency and he and Wes make up eventually. And you know I think it's just enough.

Conclusion?

Quantum Power.

Now I'm motivated to give Eric a yes.

God I love Dan Southworth.

I should check Timeranger again, his counterpart there (Time Fire) probably also keeps.

[up][up]Are you checking Ransik's counterpart Don Dolnero too (uh well one of them. Ransik takes more from the true Big Bad Captain Ryuya)

I know Frax's counterpart Gien is apparently way too unhinged from reality to keep.
