Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Ok, now for Zykov's entry:

  • Miletiy Zykov is Vlasov's chief propagandist within the Russian Liberation Army(ROA). Seeking to realize the ideals of the February Revolution, Zykov will seek to end to instill democratic values within the ROA. If chosen as Vlasov's sucessor, he will utilize underhanded ways to consolidate power such as utilizing Mikhail Oktan's smuggling operations to gain weapons and supplies from the Nazis to provide for officers and civilians, while undermining Oktan's operations from within. In reunifying West Russia, Zykov will utilize brilliant tactics such as sabotaging Gorky's tanks before attacking. Upon ascending to power as the leader of the ROA following Vlasov's death, Zykov will use a failed uprising against him as a pretext for purging Oktan. He will then cut ties with the Nazis and democratize western Russia, but use tactics such as gerrymandering and backroom deals to ensure the ROA remains on top. Regardless of his how genuine his commitment to democracy is, Zykov works hard to overcome the image of the ROA as traitors, and to provide a good quality of life for his populace, with his policies reversing the more egregious repression carried out by the ROA on the populace, while building infrastructure, schools and a social safety net for Russians and greatly expanding their rights and freedom.

Here are both Banner and Reagan's long overdo writeups.

  • Yu Gi Oh GX fanfic Agents of Light: Professor Lyman Banner is even more cunning and devious than canon. Seeking the power of the Sacred Beasts to create the Philosopher's Stone, Banner teamed up with Kagemaru. Hiding his allegiance with the Shadow Riders from Duel Academy, Banner orchestrated the disappearance of several students, including Atticus. Needing Jaden for his strong duel energy, Banner foils every attempt the protagonists make to get him expelled. Manipulating a group of students into reviving Jinzo into the human world, he makes a deal with Jinzo to kill the protagonists, Banner lures Scott into a cave and holds his soul hostage to blackmail Scott and Damian into dueling Zane. Anticipating that one of them would come after him, Banner fakes his death at Jinzo's hands and leaves Jinzo behind to kill Damian. Being defeated by Zane, Banner reveals that Camula has been watching them the whole time, revealing the true method of reviving the Sacred Beasts to her, Banner calmly blackmails all of them before gracefully accepting his death.

  • Extracurricular Activities (2019): Reagan Collins is a charming straight-A student, believing that he is making the world a better place by killing bad or abusive parents. Moonlighting as a peer counsuler to avpid any suspicion, Reagan sets up a business at his school where he sets up accidents to kill his clients parents in exchange for a portion of the insurance money. Causing the Wallace parents death by programming their SUV's computer system to disable the breaks upon exceeding the speed limit and causes Mr. Mulnick to have a fatal reaction by tricking him into drinking beer while he is on his UTI medication. Killing the Vaughans after tricking them by mixing death cap mushrooms with their regular ones and killing Grant's parents by accurately timing a tree to blow up on them. Detective Dawkins noticing the pattern, Reagan foils all of his attempts to expose him. In the climax Reagan uses Molly to lure Dawkins into a trap where he tricks a cop into fatally shooting Dawkins and switches out the recording of the murder solicitation with a music player.

So here I may have found another Darklord from the Ravenloft Dungeon and Dragons campaign setting to join Strahd himself on this list. This candidate is from the Islands of Terror accessory that goes into detail on a few domains that are physically separated by the plane's Mists from the main land mass of the demiplane.

Who is Lemot Sediam Juste?

Juste was once the lead actor and playwright for his own theater company and would go to any lengths to improve his art. Although, Juste gained much fame as a comedy and drama actor and writer, but wanted to fully master his skills by writing the perfect tragedy. At first, his acting in such only came across as melodramatic or unintentionally comedic and those he wrote were unintentionally sabotaged by actors who couldn't resist playing up the scripts in comedic fashions. This so enraged Juste that conspired his revenge, and, in the process, created the perfect tragedy. He wrote a script in which all his actors would be murdered in brutal fashions and used the time before the play to go the prop room and make some adjustments. He replaced the collapsible dagger with a steel one, exchanged the false poison with a real toxin, and so on until all the props were replaced with lethal ones. A powerful tale of betrayal, lust, and intrigue played out before the wide eyed audience. One actor went down under a bloody tide of knives, another's face went black as pitch after consuming the toxin, and the torture scene went off without a hitch as well. Once all the actors were dead, Juste bowed before the audience and was met with nothing but booing as the audience was expecting even better from Juste.

Overwhelmed with anger and guilt, he fled outside, barred the doors, and set his theater on fire. Simply enjoying the the screams of the dying for a moment, he soon realized his crime would draw attention and he thus into the misty night and into the theater of a friend. He left the door wide open as he snuck in and the mists stopped at the doorway, allowing Juste to fall asleep during the performance and be left as the only person in the building. Alone in the theater, it was then that the Mists transported Juste and the whole building to the Demiplane of Dread, Ravenloft. Awakening to find nothing but a gray mist outside the theater, Juste grew too terrified to leave and fled to the writing desk in the back to begin writing and calm his nerves. Much to his initial horror, the theater began to dissolve and he discovered that anything he wrote would become reality. From dark forests to haunted castles, Juste could create the perfect scenes to mastermind an unlimited number of tragedies in his own personal prison paradise, the dark domain of Scaena. As is the case with all domains, the lord is also cursed and Juste sees everything he creates as two-dimensional and utterly fake. Thus, he realizes he needs real actors to act out his plays and an audience to enjoy them.

Scaena flaots threw the mists and attaches itself to other domains in Ravenloft at random. Juste is able to change the appearance of his theater into whatever fantastical building he can imagine to lure in audiences. Hundreds of guests can arrive to a finely appointed lobby and take up seating in a modest yet well decorated house. As they sit down for the play, Juste begins to work his entrancing magic and lures in victims from the audience with their heart's desire to get them to touch the stage. Once the victims are on the stage, they become a part of the play, not a very pleasant experience mind you as he only writes tragedies. Besides the inherent magic of the domain, Juste is also a master Illusionist and creates layers of illusions to prevent his captive actors from seeing the truth behind the screen. These plays always end in the deaths of his actors as they fruitlessly try to survive the nightmarish stories he devises. Of course, the audience may not fare much better depending on how they react to the play. If they boo and insult his masterpieces, Juste bars the doors of the theater and burns it down with everyone inside. A part of his curse is that such an action never truly kills him, but he still feels the pain of burning yet considers it an acceptable sacrifice to punish those that insult his works. For his part, if the audience does actually the play and cheers, Juste will allow them to leave in peace.

Ever an actor, Juste loves to take part in the plays if he knows the scene will not end in relatively soon. As part of the magic granted as lord, Juste is granted much intimate knowledge about those that take part in his plays and takes full advantage of this information to break their minds with dark secrets and and old shames and to further torment them with their fears and failures. He especially loves to do this on more strong willed individuals who are about to break through his current web of illusions. While a brilliant mind capable of creating layers of illusion, on occasion Juste is forced into direct confrontation and uses his power tactically. Besides using his magic to creates illusory defenses about himself, he can meld his body into the theater itself and uses this to surprise and attack his foes and avoid getting cornered. His personal favorite tactic is dissolve the scene the heroes are currently in and turn it back into a perfect replica of the theater to make them think the illusion has ended. He then manipulates the flow of time them spend what feels like days or weeks trying to find the exit to wear down their minds. Once mentally exhausted, he appears before them and simply states that they are yet another creation of his mind. Being a persuasive man, Juste is able to wear them down until their very intelligence and personality begin eroding. Eventually, their very existence becomes a part of Juste's will and they become permanent actors in his future plays. As a final last resort, Juste will burn the theater down to take his enemies with him. If he is ever actually killed, Juste will melt into the theater and arise again in one day, but if the building is burned down while he's in this state, he is forever dead.

Is he charismatic?

Interestingly, the book notes that Lemot Juste is actually rather unpleasant to look at. He stand well over six feet tall yet is incredibly gaunt and his skin is of an unhealthy sickly pallor. Yet, his unsettling appearance is noted to only heighten his very magnetic personality. His eyes are deep black pools that can mesmerize those looking into them and his manic devotion to theater mixes with gaunt looks to create the perfect actor personality. People find him very pleasant to converse with and he maintains an air of grandeur until the play begins. As an actor, he absolutely has a sense of flair in all his actions that ultimately define his magnificence.

Is he intelligent?

Juste is a very intelligent man, by the book having a score of 20 on a scale normally 3-18, and this is perfectly shown off by his ability to constantly be writing new scenes and plot progression for his tragedies. He uses his illusions in a masterful manner to both break the minds of his victims and to make the play itself ever more grandiose for the audience. He can even think on the fly well by creating layer after layer of illusions to prevent his victims from getting to him personally and his powers to their fullest tactical extent when he is forced into battle.

Is he a bastard?

If you've read this far, you don't need me to further explain that he's an evil selfish bastard. I will say though that I don't think he goes over the line into truly vile as he's actually relatively tame compared to what most of the other Darklords of Ravenloft are capable of. I don't believe he goes over the top here.

Final Verdict?

Lemot Sediam Juste is a despicable bastard that uses his intelligence and grandiose personality to add flair to all his evil actions. I think he is a good example of this trope in action. [tup]

Hmm...Juste is a great Darklord. the issue I have isn't how petty he is, but that most of his actions are taken against civilians. I could see him counting because he's brilliant and devious, but he's tougher compared to an elegant, clasic vampire like Strahd who is deliberately designed to be a genius counter to adventurers and leads an entire nation as an opponent to other far more powerful Darklords than Juste.

Juste's so unique, intelligent and honestly tame in villainy to most other Darklords that I kind of want him to keep, though.

One reason it's so hard for a Darklord to count is they're all terrible people, cursed by a flaw to go through their own personal hell, again and again, and that flaw prevents them from ever growing as people. Strahd's damnation is to forever seek Tatyanna while never being able to make her his. Juste is damned to never be able to truly enjoy his plays, Vlad Drakov is damned to forever be a General Failure and the laughingstock of the Mist.

I kind of lean yes to Juate, given how he lures in so many, and is written to be such an engaging challenge to the players.

Honestly I'm going to go with a yeah as well. He's not the worst person in the setting and most of us love Kimblee being on the list who laughs his head off while literally blowing up civilians. Everything here seems "pulled back" in comparison to his fellow Darklords and from that there seems to be a lot of emphasis on his plotting ability.

Yeah, as the tropes page puts it: " Each Darklord has a curse of sorts, but some of the curses are abstract or far-reaching to the point where they have little practical effect in the scope of a typical adventure. Of course, many of them are not intended as a flaw to exploit, just to make the darklord's life suck."

Each of them is tormented by the curse that damned them to the Mists in the first place, which is a source of amusement to whatever Dark Powers run the Demiplane of Dread to begin with.
