Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

  • 24: Kalil Hasan, from season 4, is a member of one of Habib Marwan's terrorist cells. Participating in the kidnapping of Secretary of Defense James Heller, Kalil and his allies discovered that computer programmer Andrew Paige accidentally came across one of their Internet nodes. Kalil and another terrorist later visited Andrew's office and murdered all of his co-workers, before Kalil started a manhunt against Andrew. After finding Andrew's location by intercepting a CTU phone call, Kalil kidnapped Andrew while posing as Jack Bauer and killed two law enforcement agents during his escape. He later interrogated Andrew to find out what he knew, and ordered him to be executed even after Andrew claimed he didn't know anything about Heller's abduction. As he repeatedly evaded authorities while posing as an innocent civilian, Kalil discovers that he's being tracked by satellite, resulting in him committing suicide so Bauer and CTU won't discover Heller's location.

He can go before Ivan Erwich within the list.

Only got two more candidates from 24 left—one from Season 3 and 7. I may rewatch Live Another Day as well, but the third person I got in mind is arguably a Smug Snake during her last moments.

As for the expanded universe material, we'll see. Still a few books from the series I haven't read yet. No one from the comics counts. As for Max from the game...eh. He's kinda like Marwan: very resourceful and knows how to adjust his plans accordingly, but he goes way too far. Guy tried to start a war between America and the Middle East, and later attempted to level Los Angeles via multiple earthquakes because he blamed America for his children's deaths.

...Which actually isn't far off from the guy from Season 3 I'm gonna talk about...eh. We'll see.

Despite Revan's effed up characterization there, SWTOR was truly an underrated gem.

@Bullman Very hard for anyone in the movies other than Jango to count for this trope (again, much like the Scream movies).

@Tyk That may come off more as defiance than as smugness, but that's a discussion for when we get to her. I take it Taylor is a no because she did whatever Logan suggested and didn't make her own real genuine decision until the end? I don't hate Season 8, but yeah, they ruined Taylor too. Also, I at first thought you said Omar Hassan from Season 8 funny enough (he definitely didn't do enough to count).

Hmm here's an interesting one for you. Let me test how far a sympathetic backstory can cover villany.

Whats the work?

The monster of eldhaven is the debut novel of Jennifer Giesbrecht. A dark tale of blood and vengeance.

The city of Elendhaven sulks on the edge of the ocean. Wracked by plague, abandoned by the South, stripped of industry and left to die. But not everything dies so easily. A thing without a name stalks the city, a thing shaped like a man, with a dark heart and long pale fingers yearning to wrap around throats. A monster who cannot die. His frail master sends him out on errands, twisting him with magic, crafting a plan too cruel to name, while the monster’s heart grows fonder and colder and more cunning.

These monsters of Elendhaven will have their revenge on everyone who wronged the city, even if they have to burn the world to do it

Who is Florian Leickenbloom?

Florian was the son of am accountant who lived in the dark city of eldenhaven where he would play with his twin sister who he loved dearly. The city is a Wretched Hive of crime, murder and awfulness. One day, florians Father caught the plague, the citiznens who viewed the plague as a source of sorcery and due to the fact that the leickenbloom family had sorcery hundreds of years in their family tree, boarderd them in and locked them in to die. Florian witnessed his entire family die in front of him, one by one as his mother and sister became infected and succumbed as well. He having learned a legend that sending a corpse into Tue bay would if it th goddess in the hopes of getting her back. The goddess can't bring someone back from the dead but she can send someone to help him seek vengeance on her true son of eldenhaven in a monster named Johann.

Anyway for twelves years, Florian plots a revenge on the entire city. The one that took everything from him. He becomes an accountant and carefully works his way into the elite where he starts to suffocate the city by influencing them go bleed it dry. He analyzed and used his knowledge of martinis and the city in order to figure out how a certain investments their would affect this and set out to make it work. Florian was born with the power to send small suggestion to the weak minded, just a small one go move an account their or their. It doesn't always work and often he'd need to just use the fact that he can pretend to be meek and just suggest how something could benefit them. The suckers fell for it. Who would suspect an accountant.

All the while, Florian worked on his ultimate plan. Changing the plague to make it untreatable and unleashing it on the city that took everything from him. He convinces Johann to help him in his research in it. The two perfect

Anyway a group of ambassadors from other kingdoms come and florian wines and dines them, putting them into his good graces before asking for a toast.

“As many of you know, Elendhaven has a checkered history that is subject to wild and dark speculation among southerners. We struggle to disabuse our fellows of these myths. Thank you for joining me in this annual dinner in the spirit of cultural exchange.

Especially tonight—the anniversary of our greatest and most … personal tragedy.”

Johann’s ears perked up at the dip Florian’s honeyed voice took on the word “personal.” He dangled the knife between thumb and forefinger and watched Florian through veiled eyes. Across the table, Eleanor from the South was leaning forward in her chair, lips pursed with sympathetic curiosity. The Ambassador had gone sombre.

“Those who lived through the troubles will remember—fifteen years ago, the people of Elendhaven suffered through a terrible plague. The illness swept first through our gutters, then through the factory districts.

Its maw was so ravenous that its teeth were at the throats of even our most privileged, sheltered citizens. My own family fell victim to the nameless plague. My parents, both my uncles, their wives, and all of their children.

My…” He paused a moment before continuing, his gaze floating towards the ceiling.

“If even the Leickenblooms—who have stood in this city since time immemorial—could fall victim to this disease, they said, what hope had the rest of the city to stand against it? Indeed, all of Elendhaven would have fallen into the Nord Sea and our rotted flesh been consumed by the crustaceans, had it not been for aid from the Great Kingdoms of Mittengelt.

Your people rode to our aid like the knights of old, wielding your gold and doctors. And for that, I toast you.”

He raised his cup, a brilliant and altogether fake smile lighting his features. The pink wine glimmered jewel bright, but Florian did not put the glass to his lips. He held his pose—a prince triumphant painted in classical oils, rich and aqueous and just the slightest bit smudged around the edges—and he watched every single puffed-up noble at the table down their drinks. As soon as the champagne passed their lips, Florian’s polite mask fell away.

“Of course,” he sneered, “your aid came only when our gates were barred with corpses. Your aid came only when you feared that we would no longer be fit to deliver whale oil for your lamps or oysters for your feasts.

Your aid came only when our silver mines closed because the miners were too sick to work. You came to save us only when you thought you might own us in return. And now you come running back, when it looks as if the mines may flourish once again.”

Johann eased back in his chair and watched the faces around him twitch first in confusion, then in outrage. The silk-drenched man to Johann’s left sputtered into his ascot, but no words formed on his lips. His eyes rolled back and he fainted face-first into his soup, splattering Johann’s coat. The Sudengelt Ambassador was panicking, eyes darting wildly as his compatriots began to flinch and vomit.

Eleanor swayed in her seat and slumped onto his shoulder. Florian fished out his napkin and leant forward to wipe the foamy spittle from the Ambassador’s mouth with a kindness that might have been sincere.

“I am a brother who loved,” Florian said, “and I can attest that there is no brotherly love between Elendhaven and the South, or the Old Kingdoms. For the true sons and daughters of Elendhaven, our mother is the sea and our sister is the winter. We stand alone at the edge of the world, as I stood alone atop the corpses of my family. When you go forth from this city, you will bring the same ruin to your people that you allowed to befall mine. I am Hallandrette’s favourite son and I will devour your bones as surely as she does when her unloved children are cast into the ocean.”

When the last man fell unconscious, Johann stood and clapped.

Anyway the wine contained a knock out serum which would take away their memories of what occurred. When they wake up and take the second toast it contained the plague virus.

Florian catches that one women Eleanor hasn't drunk the second glass. He sends johan who he's become lovers with to investigate and dis over she's a mage hunter. Florian has covered his tracks white we'll and destroyed any trace that their is magic in his family line from the magic to ensure his secrecy. However she decides to check the people themselves and is able to find out.

She overpowers Johan and gets to the mansion of florian where she decides that she'll confront him. He refuses since he'll be at best lobotinzed and at worst executed and that he'd rather die then have that. She thinks that Johna is a homoclous and that hishe master death will stop him, so shoots florian, and then....Johan slots her throat right afterwards.

He pulled off both of his gloves and took Florian’s hand in his bare palms. “Florian, this … this is a stupid way to die.”

Florian struggled to speak, but there was blood in his mouth.

Johann gripped his hand harder. “After all that, you can’t intend to actually die.”

“Goddess … Johann … sh-sh.… shut up.…” Florian coughed up blood all over his chin, over his collar where mud had been streaked the night before. “There is … still one thing I need you … to do. C-come closer.”

johann touched his forehead. It was fever warm. “If … a rejected gift comes back to you … when you most need it, wouldn’t it be blasphemous … to refuse it again?”

“I don’t understand,” Johann said, but he did. Not in his head, but somewhere deeper. He understood it in his bones, a stone kept in a lonely boy’s pocket, a toy that cannot be broken. Florian probably waited all these years for Hallandrette to send his sister back to him, but here was Johann.

And here was Florian. It had to mean something. To Johann, it meant everything.

Florian’s veins began to glow, bright through the sheer fabric of his tunic. The monster felt his memories come loose under the sorcerer’s beautiful, smooth palm, easy as a tooth unhinged at the root. The glass of his mind flew apart at the cracks and the pieces were sucked under the water, taken by the tides to wash up on distant shores. He would never know their names.

Blue-lipped and shivering, Florian whispered, “A hallankind exists to make its master’s dreams come true. S-so go forth … and do that.…”

With his dying breath, Florian transfers his last but of magic to Johan allowing him to exist and sends him to live and do what he wants. Johan sets off as the city is said to be descneding into an incurable plague. One which may destroy it.

Is he magnificent?'

Yes. He can act as such a meek or harmless person to get people offgaurd and fall for it, well he destroys everything they have. He can wine and dine among the beat of them. His speeches are elaborate and charismatic and he and Johan get lots of dialogue which shows how intelligent their is.

This is the dude who took down am entire city. He can also change his plans and plan ahead. He made sure to remove any trace of his family line. Figured out Eleanor was a mage hunter in advance. He spent twelve years researching and concocting the ultimate plan to inact his revenge. Dude goes with the best of them. That and his plan is legit audacious. In the end he wins even though he dies.

Is he a bastrad. Too much ?

Now Florian is bad. In his revenge he sets out to destroy the city and concocts an incurable plague to do it and has slowly bled the city dry in revenge. Yet this isn't for the lulz. Florian saw his entire family die in front of him distro the citizens, has seen everything taken from him and swore to write this wrong. He truly loves his family and sister and all of thisthem is for him. He saw the citizens prejuduce them and then kill them and this city is just a horrific watched hive of endless horror that Florian views it as a sort of mercy kill. This city is vile to the core.

And he genuinely loves Johan even if he started off trying to manjpjye him. Even spending his last moments ensuring he'll survive. That he will at least get to

His death is treated with genuine tragedy as well and he goes to it genuinely dignified.

I'd argue that well he's bad. The sheer tragedy of what he's gone amdamdthrough is charismatic lengths to pay vengeance overtakes the bad of what he's done.

Other mitigating factors ?

To clarify this point. Florian does not mind control people when he's doing his suggestions. He can't force them into directly doing it but he could send a suggestion to go their and then encourage them to go their. Thing is it doesn't always work and Florian can role with that. Just using his own meek attitude to go where he wants and all ofof what to do in ordwe to create his plague and bleed the city that was all h in using his genuine knowledge to plan what to do. So he's not just using his powers. He genuinely has earned alot of this on his own merit.

Conclusjon ?

All yours. He was quite the villain from the novella I read so figured he should at least get a discussion here. He is something.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."

Also, this is on Griffith's character page.

  • Despair Event Horizon: It is Griffith's crossing of this that activates his Crimson Behelit.
    • Probably the visit at Charlotte's bedroom as well. Given, that he'd guessed the king's obsession with his own daughter (and thus could see how it'd probably turn out) and delivering an I Shall Taunt You speech to the man, who was keeping him in his dungeons, we can assume that Griffith gave up on everything... or it would be QUITE a Too Dumb to Live moment for a Magnificent Bastard.

Also, cut these from YMMV.Halloweentown.

Thanks to ACW for helping me rework the first sentence in my Sicrocco entry and toss some potholes:

  • Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Paptimus Scirocco — "The Man from Jupiter" — is an elusive mercenary and Titans Lieutenant who graduates to taking over the organization. A brilliant tactician both in and out of a mobile suit, Scirocco excels at reading potential in his subordinates and outmaneuvers the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) to capture the strategic stronghold of the lunar city Von Braun. Leaving the day-to-day operations of the district in the hands of his antagonistic superior, Scirocco divulges the man's schemes to the AEUG and arranges for his death to gain more dominance within the Titans for himself. Forming an alliance with Haman Khan of Neo-Zeon, Scirocco bolsters the strength of the Titans with the Axis military and personally assassinates the Titans leader, Jamitov Hymem, assuming command over the syndicate and blaming Jamitov's death on Haman, rallying his forces to fight against her. Giving a former AEUG pilot he corrupted to his side an eloquent lecture on his ambitions for humanity, Scirocco engages the AEUG personally and reveals he has kept his alliance with Haman to revitalize the strength of his fleet. Even with his armada destroyed by the blast of a colony laser, Scirocco continues to fight Kamille Bidan and even in his dying moments, destroys Kamille's consciousness, unrelentingly unwilling to accept his vanquishment. Emotionally manipulative yet charming, charismatic and stylish, Scirocco proves himself to be every bit as brilliantly Machiavellian as he is mysterious.
