Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

I didn't participate in the discussion ACW much as you didn't. There was a time to dispute it and I'm not going to complain to those who did take the time to discuss it. We'll figure stuff out accordingly, Treize is the only OV pothole coming to mind atm.

I was gonna just update my old post, but with a few people responding, just to make sure this gets seen by everyone, here's all I did:

Magnificent Bastard Call Of Duty: Price's entry, Makarov's name changed to Renegade Russian

Magnificent Bastard Yu Gi Oh: Thief King Bakura's entry, Dark Bakura's name changed to Greater-Scope Villain just because I don't know the work that well - if there's any better options, please let me know

Magnificent Bastard Live Action TV: Banshee, Kai Proctor's entry, changed his name to Ambition Is Evil - completely unrelated, but I also got The Riddler's character page in his name while I was there.

Magnificent Bastard Gundam: Treize Khushrenada's entry, changed his name to Hidden Agenda Villain

Magnificent Bastard Disney: Once Upon a Time, Rumple's entry, changed the pothole around "architect of the entire saga" to Greater-Scope Villain - Mir/Bull, if either of you wanna do something else with that, just let me know

Magnificent Bastard Anime And Manga: K, Nagare's entry, I changed the pothole around "Green King" to Authority Equals Asskicking

Magnificent Bastard Ben 10 is actually more up-to-date than the main page and the fix will be made if it just gets swapped in (one of Vilgax's names now points to his character page

@43: If you want, I can just go request these swaps real quick - the LP thread gets dealt with pretty fast nowadays, so it'd probably be done before the batch tonight

Big Bad might work better for Rumple. Since he is the overall main villain of the show.

As said on the CM Thread, the deadline for Ultraman Trigger: New Generation Tiga has passed and I got an MB candidate.

What's the Work?

Ultraman Trigger: New Generation Tiga is the 33rd main entry in the Ultra Series, being a reimagining/remake-of-sorts of Ultraman Tiga and Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey, featuring the adventures of a young man named Kengo Manaka, who becomes the Giant of Light, Ultraman Trigger, and joins the kaiju-fighting team GUTS Select to protect the world from the threat of the Dark Giants: Carmeara, Darrgon and Hudram; three evil Ultras who were sealed in stone in the past and reawakened in the present and seek the Eternity Core, a powerful artifact that can reshape the universe.

Who's the Candidate?

The candidate is the space treasure hunter, Ignis, the last of the Lishurians.

Ignis was an inhabitant of Planet Lishuria which the Dark Giant, Hudram, destroyed after awakening; killing all but one of the inhabitants of the planet: Ignis himself, who swore to stop Hudram and make sure he'd never hurt innocents again and to avenge his people. In his debut episode he is shown as a bit of a Gold Digger as he tries kidnapping Yuna upon hearing she's the heiress to her father's wealthy company, TPU, but relents when cornered; and when Hudram kidnaps her in an attempt to bring out Yuzare, who is the key to the Eternity Core and whose spirit lays inside Yuna, he goes to save her from the Dark Giant he hates, after Hudram is beaten he retreats.

His next appearance has him try and steal an ancient treasure before he gets tangled up on a kaiju attack from Oka-Gubila, and despite initially freaking out when he is clinging on to Gubila and subsequently is thrown off, he recovers his cool immediately once it is over. His next appearance has him reveal that he figured out Kengo is Trigger easily and keeps quiet out of amusement, he then helps GUTS Select take down the seemingly invincible mechanical kaiju Gigadelos, with a plan he comes up with all on his own that works like a charm and defeats the robot. When Ultraman Z arrives, Ignis steals the Ultra Medals and tries to make off with them before he gets mixed up with an Alien Barossa and ends up fighting it and almost getting killed before Z rescues him, after which he decides to give the medals back out of gratitude.

In the latter half of the series he gains the ability to become Trigger Dark when the leftover essence of the Dark Giant bonds with him followed by him stealing a prototype Sparklens to modify into his personal weapon, he at first he becomes more erratic and reckless turning almost into a mindless berserker; but eventually calms down after temporarily losing his power and having his Sparklens fixed by Akito afterwards.

For his final scheme, he kidnaps Yuna again, this time to use her to open the gates to the Eternity Core, disabling GUTS Select's weapons, equipment and their base with an EMP while leaving a message behind where he reveals his true intentions and that he intends to give them a fighting chance to stop him, all while leaving behind an obstacle in the form of a giant clockwork mech, Mecha Musashin, who is a powerful opponent that keeps both GUTS Select and Trigger occupied. He eventually is unable to go through with his plans when he realizes the full scope of the consequences of using the Eternity Core, as the whole universe could be destroyed which is shown when Hudram gives him the choice to save Yuna as he takes her hostage or go ahead with his goals, before fighting Hudram as Trigger Dark one last time. Then the members of GUTS Select that he befriended: Yuna, Akito and Kengo give him encouragement and the power of light to defeat Hudram for good.

In the series finale he joins Trigger/Kengo in fighting the final threat: Megalothor, and after the evil is beaten and Kengo sacrifices himself to keep the Eternity Core from going out of control, Ignis leaves Earth to seek a way to bring back the Lishurians, parting on good terms with GUTS Select

Is he magnificent?

He's smart, calculating, has clear goals in mind and is so ahead of everyone else in the scheming department that he basically could've won without issue yet still gave everyone else a fighting chance to catch up to him without fully compromising his plans; even when being a prisoner he manages to set up the pieces of his endgame and when he realizes the sheer scope of the consequences of employing the Eternity Core he backs out and fully turns to the side of good.

He freaks out a bunch of times, but those freak outs never really stick and he goes back to being calm, collected and intelligent fairly quickly. Also worth noting that most of his freakouts come from dealing with Hudram, who committed genocide on his kind and left him severely traumatized, but otherwise that doesn't deters his charm and intellect.

Is he a bastard?

He never was evil per se, but he was all too happy to hinder, annoy and do things that would prove troublesome for GUTS Select, such as trying to kidnap Yuna in his debut episode, tries to steal the Ultra Medals from Ultraman Z, stealing a GUTS Sparklens to modify into a Transformation Trinket for his own purposes and in his final outing he leaves a deadly adversary in Mecha Musashin for the heroes to deal with; all in all ruthless and apathetic at first but then turned nicer until he abandoned his more roguish tendencies.

Verdict?

Keeper. He is smart, calm, collected and none of his freak outs or loses of composture lasted any longer than a single episode's climax before he returned to being magnificent. His turn to good further compounds this, and by the end of the series he succeeds in defeating Hudram and even goes on to continue his goal of bringing his race back, completely unscathed from all the adversity he faced.

How is this for McElroy?

  • The 51st State: Elmo McElroy is a former pharmacology graduate turned drug chemist, who decides to betray his boss the Lizard, and sell his new drug POS 51 to a gangster in Liverpool himself in order to get out of the drug business. McElroy rigs a machine in his lab so that it will blow up when the Lizard turns up his thermostat, but not before letting his lab mice go. When his buyer is killed by Dawn "Dakota" Parker, McElroy teams up with Felix DeSouza to find a new buyer and tricks a group of skinheads into allowing them to use their labs to brew POS 51. Convincing Dawn to betray the Lizard, McElroy engineers a plan that would kill the Lizard and put the corrupt Virgil Kane behind bars at the same time. Having Dawn lead the Lizard into a trap, McElroy tricks the Lizard into digesting an explosive drug that would go off the exact moment Kane comes in to arrest the group, before revealing that POS 51 is just a placebo and escaping once his plan goes off without a hitch. A master chemist and skilled salesman, McElroy ends the film finally a free man.

Likewise with j in that I miiiight abstain on Ignis for now, lemme think a bit more and see if any other insights come to the forefront.

Next up from The Tick, we've got a one-shot...the most powerfully potent porpoise the world has ever known!

Who is the Fin? What makes him a candidate?

Appearing in "The Tick vs Reno, Nevada", voiced by Maurice LaMarche in his classic Brain voice, the dolphin known as Mr. Smartypants is introduced as the star of a Nevada circus show, on the daily expected by his trainers Soren and Frederica to jump through a hoop, the same hoop on fire, slide into a pair of pants, "the same pants on fire!", and even write a haiku!

Smartypants pulled off all of this for the price of smidgens of fish...but, far smarter than anyone could have realized and chaffing under the humiliating, painful tricks, Smartypants stages a "kidnapping" from his training area, using his henchmen to stage a robbery and escape with Smartypants in tow, proclaiming "Mr. Smartypants is dead...long live the Fin!"

Using his "Cult of the Fin" minions who all wish to attain "inner dolphinness", the Fin uses them to pull off various heists across Reno to acquire components for a superweapon, while simultaneously capturing Soren and Frederica, ordering his minions to "Pry these hairless apes from my streamlined form and prepare them for torture!".....torture that manifests in the Fin forcing them to jump through hoops, slide into pants, and even write haikus for him while underwater:

The Fin: (Reading haiku) "Soren's lips are blue.
I think he's cold.
It makes me sad.
I hope we live?!
You call this a haiku?! You're just counting syllables! Get back in the water!!"

Eventually trapping Soren and Frederica in a pair of pants while gleefully pulling an Ironic Echo on if they can "Do the same tricks...ON FIRE!", the Fin is ambushed by the Tick and Arthur, and while the Tick saves Soren and Frederica, Arthur tries to "save" the "kidnapped" Mr. Smartypants. The Fin hilariously reveals his villainous status to Arthur by saying "Someone come pummel this annoying person."

We then come to the Fin's master plan reveal...and oh what a plan it is.

The Tick: Well, I think we can pretty much call it a day.
The Fin: Think again, you big, blue DINK! Soon you will be begging for mercy, and you will find that I have none!
Tick: Y'know, for a lovable dolphin, he's pretty hostile.
The Fin: You overconfident dibs, you've lost and you don't even know it! For I have constructed a revolutionary device that will bury Reno in my wealth! I have invented...THE FISH MAGNET!
Tick: A fish magnet? That's ridiculous!
Minion: Yeah boss, we thought you were doing something that would bring us a lot of money!
The Fin: You fools! Money doesn't put fish on the table! FISH puts fish on the table!

The Fin then activates his Fish Magnet...and it works, bringing a literal storm of fish crashing down from the sky and beginning to bury Reno in it, the Fin granted an unending supply of goodies while Reno feels his fishy wrath.

Luckily, while the Tick pursues the Fin through pools of water, Arthur manages to reverse the polarity of the Fish Magnet and save Reno. Meanwhile, the Fin and the Tick come to an unspoken agreement to have a breath holding competition to decide the victor of their fight, which the Tick ultimately wins. The Fin is remanded into Soren and Frederica's custody, and so, as the two are genuinely apologetic to their old partner for not realizing how unhappy he was, they have rechristened their show into "Mr. Smartypants: The world's angriest talking dolphin!"

Soren: Oh, Monsieur Smartypants, we are so sorry!
Frederica: Oui, how could we have known you were so unhappy? But you heard what that judge said!
Soren: You have been remanded to our custody, and you must do as we say! Here, have another fish!
The Fin: I don't need your stinkin' fish! Why don't you get real jobs, you tanning-booth disasters!
Soren: Oui, keep it up!
Frederica: Now you've got it!

Is he magnificent?

Yah, he's a talking dolphin voiced hilariously to Awesome Ego and Laughably Evil perfection by LaMarche, ranting about how fish is "the food of the gods!" while concocting a scheme involving a damn Fish Magnet that everyone calls out as nonsensical...only for it to work, while the Fin then duels the Tick in an amusing final battle of breath-holding. His defeat isn't the most dignified as he's returned to his hated position as an entertainer under Soren and Frederica, but hey he's got a job doing what he does best: insulting people [lol]

Is he a bastard?

Tries to flood all of Reno in a tidal wave of fish! The horror!

Final Verdict?

That's a (dolphin shriek)-ing Keeper!

No! That is NOT Solid Snake! Stop impersonating him!
