Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

[tup] Hartwell and Sharon

With all this Marvel talk, let's get some DC action up in here. I've been binging the DC Animated movies on HBO Max recently, and I just so happened to find one who went under the radar.

What's the work?

Superman: Doomsday is the first of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies. Released in 2007, the movie’s an abridged adaptation of the famed Death of Superman story.

Here, Superman, after a tough battle with the alien Doomsday, dies after getting beaten up really badly. With Superman gone, Lex Luthor decides to take matters into his own hands by planning to take control of Metropolis without that pesky man in tights to stop him.

But aside from reporters Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, there’s another being out trying to prevent Luthor from what his plans of conquest.

Who is He?

Superman…’s clone, created by Luthor as a way to ultimately gain control over Metropolis. This clone however, has a different agenda altogether.

What does he do?

Raised by Luthor to be as cunning as him, the Superman clone, who has all of the original’s abilities, is introduced saving Lois and a girl, who are trapped inside a falling school bus after their encounter with Toymaker. The clone immediately after beats up Toyman’s robot spider and gets the asshole sent to prison. The entire city believes Superman has returned, with the clone capable of copying just enough of the Man of Steel to blend right back in.

But the clone isn’t no softie. Upon finding out that Toyman not only escaped prison, but also killed a child in the process, the clone goes berserk. Snatching Toyman and flying him up near the police station, the clone drops him, which kills bastard right in front of some cops. Not only was this an act of tranquil vengeance for his cruelty, it was also meant to send a message to the general populace of Metropolis: anybody who commits a crime, will feel the clone’s brutality.

After Luthor finds out that Superman’s actual body used to create the clone has been taken by the Man of Steel's loyal robot servant, he sends the clone out to retrieve it, but not before beating him up to vent his anger towards Superman leaving him (just fuck him, dude, if you miss him so bad). But afterwards, the clone realizes that something’s not quite right about his mind. Literally. He heads to a salon and uses his X-ray vision to find that Luthor had planted a kryptonite pellet inside his mind, a way for Luthor to kill him should he ever have to. Using his heat vision, the clone is able to deactivate the pellet and surgically remove it from his brain. He wishes the ladies casually watching this act an apology and heads on out.

Later, Luthor tries to kill Lois and Jimmy Olsen in his room containing an army of incubated Superman clones. The original clone arrives, rescues the reporters, and destroys every yet-to-be-awakened clone in captivity. Luthor attempts to detonate the kryptonite pellet, but finds that it's been destroyed. So Luthor tries to hide out in his red light panic room in an attempt to ambush him, but the clone instead locks the room shut, pulls the entire room out from the building, and tosses it into the street with Luthor still inside, rendering him incapacitated for the rest of the movie.

After the military fails to vanquish the clone, in comes OG Superman, now donning his black solar suit. After fighting the clone, who’s strength is greater than Superman’s at this point, for a good while, Superman is able to defeat him by using his heat vision to detonate a kryptonite canister stuck to the clone's chest. With his final breath, the clone tells Superman to protect the people of Metropolis, before dying peacefully in Superman’s arms.

Is he charming? Intelligent? Able to think on his feet?

The clone is capable of intelligence, able to outsmart a brilliant mind such as Luthor on several occasions, and he even gets some funny moments, like when he lectures a woman whose cat was stuck in a tree. Even his death paints him as a Graceful Loser who wants Superman to continue fighting for his city.

Is he a bastard? Too much of one?

The clone is a Knight Templar who thinks that might makes right, that his murders are what the city needs to be safe, that fear is what must keep everyone in line. He’s even all but eager to kill Superman after he’s been partially revived. He's ultimately a cold vigilante who lacks the empathetic mercy of his original source.

But the clone also has standards. He despises Toyman after hearing that he killed a child, which leads to his murder. He also ultimately believes he’s in the right, that he is genuinely making Metropolis a safer place.

The competition?

The movie’s a standalone story, but nobody else within the movie keeps. Compared to the other villains of the film, Luthor is constantly outsmarted by the clone, so he doesn’t keep, and Toyman’s way to sadistic to count.

Verdict

I see him as a keep tbh.

I sadly don't feel this one, he comes across as too petty for me. Especially this moment "Watch the language", which i failed to see as cool, but as extremely petty show of force:

(3:08 time mark)

Overall, the entierty of "defending Metropolis" after Toyman's killing comes across as him simply bullying the people of the city.

Zemo is an easy keep. (Seeing as this show gave him his purple balaclava, I'm starting to wonder if there's gonna be a pattern of purple-themed Magnificent Bastards in Disney+ MCU shows! [lol]) Sharon I'm... not as sure about, mostly because it just really felt to me like the only reason she was able to come out on top was due to writer fiat. So much of what she did in episode 3 really didn't make sense with her reveal as the Power Broker...

I dunno. Maybe that doesn't matter, I'm not sure.

I guess.... weak yeah for Sharon.

And yes, Karli and John are definitely miles away from this trope. Karli especially was super in over her head.

I'm gonna abstain from voting on Superman's clone.

Trust you? The only person I can trust is myself.

Tbh I'm fine with the Superman clone counting, been a bit since I've seen the film but his attitude towards Metropolis citizens while protecting them aren't really wrong in a logical if a bit abrasive sense—the cops were ready to open fire on him, him harming them and cracking wise while still sparing their lives despite crossing him is more of a point in his favor for me when he could have squashed them—and he outwits Luthor + dies a Graceful Loser with an Alas, Poor Villain demise. Unless I'm misremembering something gravely, I'll give him a Yes, good job finding that one!

Alright. With Sharon, Walker and Amorpho all going up, I was starting to feel a bit left out:

What is the work?

Danny Phantom of course as we’ve already established: hit Nicktoon that ran from 2004-2007 for three seasons. Danny Fenton, 14 year old son of ghost hunters, gains the powers of a ghost to become the titular superhero and fight different ghost villains all the time (a bunch of them he fights again and again). This is the Season 3 episode "Frightmare" that the character is from.

Who is he and what has he done?

Nocturn is "the ghost of sleep" who desires dreams in order to harness their power and grow stronger (basically he’s the Sandman and no, not the Spider-Man one haha). Knowing of Danny Phantom, he puts Danny to sleep during a confrontation and puts him in the Ghost Zone while the helmet Danny wears either keeps him from waking up or harnesses his dreams (more on that in a moment or so). Nocturn then proceeds to use his abilities to put everyone in the town asleep (as he reveals he has in other towns) and use the helmets on each one to harness the dreams for power for himself (using a giant antenna to receive it all too).

Danny is dreaming about being a big football star who’s popular, that everyone knows he’s a hero (where he happens to take out Fright Knight as part of that) and that best friend Sam Manson is his girlfriend, but Danny wakes from the shock of him and Sam about to kiss. It’s then that he returns, learns everyone has been put to sleep by Nocturn’s minion Sleepwalkers and learns of Nocturn being involved in it all for power (having done it with a bunch of other towns too as he says). Danny is barely able to escape after a fight and he proceeds to go wake up other best friend Tucker Foley, Sam (pretty much having Danny’s same dream) and his older sister Jazz by comedically shocking them out of their dreams by going in them and doing expected things (specifically using bully Dash Patterson on two occasions with hilarious results).

Danny and Sam go inside Nocturn’s dream while he’s asleep and it turns out he’s prepared because he can fully control anyone’s dreams and that absolutely extends to his own (thus, he’s absolutely 100% aware of his surroundings). Tucker and Jazz manage to take out the antennae though (along with the Sleepwalkers since Nocturn can no longer get power from the dreams at that time), Danny and Sam defeat and force Nocturn awake and in a moment of frustration, he charges them and gets sucked into the Fenton Thermos. Next time he’s since is at the end of the series in "Phantom Planet" (which I haven’t recently rewatched) in which he silently helps to save Earth.

Is he magnificent?

Nocturn manages to put everyone in the town to sleep to be able to put the devices on them and use their dreams to grow stronger. He again mentions he’s done this in other towns too. When Nocturn’s powered up (how cool is it the man is completely and totally aware in his own dreams?), he’s also clearly not easy to beat and the one possible drawback to all this is convenience in not only having the necessary devices to get strength from dreams and the abilities to do the things he does (but then again, he still knows how to use them with definite skill).

Bastard? Too much?

He could be cruel and trap everyone in terrible dreams, but the dreams are instead good ones and act as ignorant bliss (though the argument against that could be how Nocturn couldn’t get everyone to stay in the dreams if they weren’t good ones). The harnessing of the dreams doesn’t actually do any harm to the individuals he’s using for power either (though the fact that he’d have to keep everyone asleep could do just that, but it’s never fully dived into or addressed). Nocturn while in it for his own satisfaction and benefit isn’t looking to over exert himself in such a way that’s vicious or harmful either towards others and his end goal is just to enjoy the power he gets (which while not terribly deep is still not something smug or petty if you ask me).

Verdict?

I say [tup] if all that’s enough.

Here's my two write-ups!

  • Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel:
    • Some the Will of Violence and Catastrophes is delegated the dirtiest job by Ar Ciel to maintain the balance of nature, as a figure of death and destruction. Accompanying Ar Ru to the surface world as her bodyguard by occupying the body of Finnel, Soma found herself among the ranks of Clustania as an assassin, becoming Clustania's deadliest killer. Growing fond of Finnel, when she realized she was slowly dying and the only way was to save her was to take her back to Harvestasha she forced her by using her love for Aoto and then forcefully possess her to make Cocona make a deal to save her. When she learned Harvestasha and Luphan were gonna sacrifice Finnel to summon Ar Ru, Soma fully changed sides and fought them back to protect her, even going as far as to support Aoto in Finnel's Cosmosphere to free her from their influence. A professional murderer, Soma is a killer who'll do what it takes to see her duty and protect those she cares about.
    • Ever since she was born, Akane was destined for greatness which she did by becoming the Supreme Commander of the Clustania Army at the age of 15 and the leader who led them to a new era. A cold and calculating woman, Akane is a capable general that she seemed unstoppable, invading most of human's lands, countering the Great Fangs, and capturing the party and her predecessor Richa by deactivating her nation's defenses to lure them to a trap. However underneath her iron mask is her principles that when she learned Harvestasha and Luphan were planning to sacrifice Finnel to create a twisted world, she turned on them and allied with her to restore the world, playing a vital role in resurrecting Tyria. Now the new leader of Clustania, Akane uses her nation's full support to assist the party and unite with the other nations to fix the mistakes Clustania has made in the past.

@DemonDuck He knows what dreams people have since he clearly knows Danny dreamt about Sam (and probably vice versa too). We never see anyone whose asleep being uncomfortable with it and I think the episode makes it clear enough that a bad dream would be too easy to wake up from and thus, Nocturn couldn’t keep them asleep.

Alright, gonna churn out my two new writeups before I start modifying the others:

  • Fallout: New Vegas: Joshua Graham, the "Burned Man," was once the infamous "Malpais Legate," a warrior of the Legion and a feared tactician. Upon a single failure, he was set aflame and tossed into a canyon. Surviving, finding the Mormon religion, and finding a new community with the people of Zion, Graham became the exceptionally successful war chief of the Dead Horses when the Legion's vassal tribe, the White Legs, waged war upon the people of Zion. After winning a great many battles, Graham resolves to crush the White Legs entirely, his darker instincts having been reawakened by the conflict and desire to help his tribe. To this end, he holds the escape route of Courier Six hostage, using Six's lack of taboos to get him needed resources. If he is given the chance to take on the White Legs, Graham wipes them out almost singlehandedly, eventually deviating from his path and reappearing at the end of the camp having already captured their leader and winning the final battle. While brutal, Graham can also be talked out of his brutal ways and find greater contentedness.
  • The X-Files: "Bad Blood": Sheriff Hartwell seems to at first be the ally of Mulder and Scully, but is in reality a cunning yet polite vampire. Charming and gentlemanly in Scully's interpretation yet foolish and simple in Mulder's, Hartwell deceives both and leads them away from the vampiric Serial Killer Ronnie Strickland, effortlessly cloaking his vampiric nature all the while and delaying them until they seemingly kill Ronnie. When they return to hunt down Ronnie once again, as he remains alive, Hartwell politely works alongside them. Nonchalantly sending Mulder into a trap, leaving him unconscious, Hartwell explains to Scully the truth, admitting that the entire community is composed of vampires. Hartwell states that while he cannot approve of Ronnie's murderous actions, he is nonetheless a community member who must be protected. Drugging Scully and leaving both herself and Mulder unharmed, Hartwell disappears with his community, Ronnie included, fully achieving his goals and escaping any form of justice.

Edit: Oh, and I'm also okay with Clone Superman going up.
