Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

I discussed this with Joseph in PM already but I've noticed it's been some time since Invisible War came applicable for discussion and watching it slipped my mind. I can get to it when I get to it but if someone else has seen/sees it before me, 'tis all theirs.

For now I'll move it from discussion dates to my to do but again, if someone beats me to it, that's cool too.

[down] Aw, fuck, musta missed that one. It's cool, it's a fake lock so I can swap it out myself. Yeah lol just found that out and requested in locked.

@43110: Could you please have Rufus' entry on Final Fantasy VII be replaced with the new one. The ymmv page there is locked because of some nonesnical shipping stuff, so your going to have to ask for it to be changed on the locked pages themselves.

[up]Wait no. Its not the fake lock. The mods themselves locked that page due to shipping wars that were occuring there.

Wait, the FFVII page got locked because of shipping?

I thought it was hype backlash, fandom wars etc.

Not whom Cloud should put the thunder in.

Also, I'll do my Sephiroth EP... eventually. I need some BIG motivation for that. Like with the Spirit Bomb.

Ahhh, why not...

What's the work?

Majin Tantei Neugami Neurois a manga by Yuusei Matsui, the mind behind Assassination Classroom..or 'Demon Detective Neuro Neugami. Neuro is a powerful demon, one of the best in hell...he also feeds on mysteries (or rather, the energy generated by someone when they create one)...the problem? Neuro is bored as hell, without any fun mysteries left. So, he defies demon law to zip on over to earth, set himself up as a detective...by snatching up a young woman named Yako, making her the public face of the agency and himself as her assistant, as he uses Yako to solve all those yummy murders.

Now....Neuro.

Who is Neuro?

Neuro is a brilliant, powerful demon who is growing weaker on earth, but he loves all the mysteries and the food there. Establishing himself as Yako's assistant, Neuro...frequently keeps her like a slave along with others in his agency (in a weird Blue-and-Orange Morality way, it's his way of respecting her while having fun.) However..basically Neuro solves mysteries. Audaciously. He looks into the murders, deduces exactly what's responsible and manipulates the situations to his advantage, lures the perpetrators into traps and exposes them before glutting himself on th resulting mystery....all while using Yako as the face so he can escape detection.

Neuro..does this a lot, and outwits opponents frequently...the kicker is about half through the manga? The Big Bad comes in: Sicks, the leader of the main villains. Sicks is a being so evil he's another species who intends to take over the world and exterminate humanity, wanting Neuro to join him. Neuro is initially fascinated, but then Sicks presents him a mansion of humans who he's had...murder people in horrific, yet inventive ways and invite Neuro to figure out how they did it. Neuro is revolted by this (Neuro feeds off the negative energy caused by the murders, so forcing people to commit murder without the requisite darkness is, as the tropes page says "like offering a man dying of hunger diet soda")...Sicks and Neuro declare war on one another, as Neuro claims humans are his toys and his food source. Only HE gets to toy with them,

The rest of the manga? Sicks kicks off a brutal revolution to destroy Japan, ending his Fingers, his chief henchmen to destroy Neuro. Neuro faces them, outwits them and destroys them in term, save one who sacrifices herself out of loyalty to Sicks, and leaves Neuro without answers...which he gracefully accepts, acknowledging his loss.

By the end? Neuro and Yako set up a plan to defeat Sicks, Neuro playing his part, even at his weakest, as he lures Sicks into a final trap and battle...ending by using the last of his energy to literally drive a stealth jet through Sicks' face, destroying him...however, a dying Neuro is forced to return to the demon world to survive and Yako becomes a detective herself....with the final pages hinting Neuro is returning and hungry for a new mystery.

How do his actions and demeanor show he's an MB?

Neuro is...delightful. He's confident, assured, incredible at discerning mysteries, and he sets things up to knock 'em down. Neuro is an absolute genius, and he's smart enough to use proxies. Most of the stories are Neuro manipulating his prey so he can reveal the mysteries and chow down. He suffers only one defeat in the series, and acknowledges it with perfect good grace when it occurs. Furthermore, Neuro gets the better of Sicks to an exceptional level...and more than that? Neuro has style. He's a delight to watch, and he's audacious beyond belief. He frequently lures his enemies/prey in with elaborate traps and gambits and he's almost fearless. Yeah, he fits this brilliantly.

Is he a bastard? Too much?

Neuro...is not in this because he's a humanitarian. He's not. Neuro looks down on humans at first. He's a demon there for food, and he's...a nasty boss, using Yako and other employees as slaves. ow, he is a demon with a demon morality, and on his character page, for being a complete troll?

"The biggest troll. Famous incidents are: putting super steroids in Yako's gift chocolate on Valentine's Day, setting up traps for kicks, using Yako as a weapon, releasing demonic fish within hot springs, stealing Yako's wallet and going home by himself while leaving her several long miles away from home, and getting Yako and Godai to deactivate a bomb by themselves despite being fully capable of doing it himself."

Most of it is...Played for Laughs, but Neuro? Genuinely cares about and respects Yako. He never leaves any damage on her, and by the end of the series, he's grown to truly value her as a partner and friend. Neuro respects others who win him with their convictions, and he has a bizarre set of morals that nonetheless drive him...Neuro hates killing. He absolutely refuses to do so in almost any circumstance because when you kill a human being, they can never make a new mystery. He only kills Sicks to save other humans, but when one of Sicks' men kills a ton of people, Neuro tortures him brutally in retribution, having fun the entire time. Neuro is a bizarre blend of his own, frequently alien code, but while he is a bastard? He has seriously noble qualities to him.

Conclusion?

Automatically easy keep.

Speaking of EP...Time to posting another candidate to see if he's qualified or not and this one is a bit of a tricky one too.

What's the Work

Konosuba is a 2016-17 anime that tells us the adventures about a young man named Kazuma who got reincarnated to the fantasy world after his embarrassing demise in the human world. Needless to say, after he reincarnated to the fantasy world, he is stuck with three "problem children". And they are none other than: Aqua, the self-centered water goddess who reincarnated Kazuma to the fantasy world and basically his "cheat item" before departing from the purgatory into the fantasy world; Megumin, a child mage who has a huge fascination with Explosion Spells; and Darkness, who is a beautiful and masochistic lady-knight. However, with the parties combined, Kazuma and co tries to defeat a Demon Lord who terrorizes it even if they sometimes forgot the goals.

Now, our candidate in question came from the second season of the anime. In Episode 5 of season 2, Kazuma receives a call about a strange explosive doll that appears outside a certain dungeon which put the town at a risk considered it would made adventurers from the guild hard to pass the dungeon. And the one who is behind all the explosive dolls? Is one of the former commanders of the Demon Lord, Vanir.

Who is He/What Has He Done

Notice: Before I begin the EP...I only cover on what he did on the second season of the anime... I haven't read the LN but in case if he got approved and I already read the LN, I will try to make an update on his new deeds for his writeup.

So... Vanir is actually an archmagician who is behind the dolls and he's actually one of the servants of the Demon Lord. The reason why he occupied a dungeon is because he thought that he found a vacant dungeon that could fulfill his plan that was originally renovating a dungeon to be extremely rigged and difficult, and then fight the adventurers at the bottom with the promise of great treasure awaiting them. After losing, he will drop a chest containing a slip of paper that writes "You Lose" to the adventurers, just to create a "Shaggy Dog" Story for them and feed on their negative emotions. Considered that Vanir thought that the dungeon is vacant, he uses that dungeon instead rather than renovating a new one. Unfortunately for him, he can't enter the deepest parts of the dungeon due to the circle that could purify the undead that was drawn by Aqua in the previous episode.

Needless to say, Vanir clearly dislike this and tries to kill the one who drew the circle. He was appeared to be defeated at first due to Kazuma's lucky attack but he came back again by attaching his mask to Darkness' body. Unfortunately for him, Darkness is a total masochist which puts Vanir off to the point that Kazuma uses a seal to stop Vanir. Despite Vanir having a bit of a hard time controlling Darkness' body, he still manages to control her nonetheless and tries to take a revenge on Aqua and knocks several of the adventurers who got in his way. Even if Kazuma tries to remove the talisman, it still useless as Vanir still took control of Darkness body and even then, both Vanir and Darkness perform a cordial relationship towards each other and as a result, he let both of him and Darkness getting destroyed by Megumin's explosion. Fortunately, Darkness is still alive in the end although her armor ended up being destroyed. Although Vanir is seemingly defeated by the heroes, it was revealed that he had an extra live and uses his second life to work for a shop that was run by another former Demon Lord commander, Wiz. He's a little bit competent on his work to the point that he strikes a business with Kazuma. Although sometimes he punishes Wiz by electrocuting her when she does something incompetent when it comes to running a shop and this is played for laughs.

How Does His Actions and Demeanor Shows that He's an MB

So... I'm not going to downplay this but Vanir sometimes boast himself. Although he does backup his boast with his extraordinary powers such as when Vanir tells the heroes that it's useless to remove the seal that was put in Darkness' body, he was actually right considered Vanir still possessed Darkness' body regardless if the seal is attached or not. And then there's this scene where he's having a hard time controlling Darkness considered that she's a sadomasochist who ended up ruins his cool lines much to Vanir's disappointment. Even then, he still manages to control her body and made her fight more effectively than before. And then there's this scene where he punishes Wiz by electrocuting her due to her incompetence running a shop but mostly this is played for laughs and Wiz didn't die and instead fell unconscious. But even then, I felt that Vanir is rather charming and charismatic even if he's a former commander of Demon Lord due to he has a bit of jovial and friendly behavior towards the protagonists and like I said, he does have a plan and powers to backup his boasts so yeah... I'm not sure about this one.

Is He A Bastard, Too Much?

Well, Vanir is a former Demon Lord commander even if he's mostly work for strengthening the barrier along with Wiz, he is the one who is responsible of the explosive dolls which hinders the adventurers from the guild to pass the dungeon, he believes in Might Makes It Right philosophy, he tries to kill a person who draw a holy circle that made him hard to enter the deepest parts of dungeon by bodyjacking someone to do his own bidding, he took that body that he bodyjacks as a hostage and lastly he had a master plan that involves on pranking people so that he could feed their negative emotions (Even if I didn't recall this on the anime or I just merely forgot).

But regardless, Vanir is a noble demon and despite he believes in Might Makes it Right philosophy, he won't hesitate to help those who are weaker. He has a moral standards by not killing humans even if the reasoning behind it seems pragmatic and he is one of the demon lord commander that performs heel-face turn at the end. Helping Kazuma and co. on various situation such as making money even if it's ultimately for his own benefit and his crimes isn't that revolting compared to people like Hans or Alderp so yeah...I'm a little bit torn on this one.

Final Verdict

You guys decide if he qualifies as an MB or not. I can see some people disagree with me if he ended up qualifying as a Magnificent Bastard because some people seeing him not doing enough or his actions mostly played for laughs and gags and I'm cool if he doesn't qualify since this is a YMMV trope after all. But in my opinion, I think he just hits the mark a little bit. Sorry for the poor sentence and grammar structuring on this EP because I try at my best to describe Vanir's actions.

Oh and an aye to Neuro too btw.

From Night World

Yeah no this is a cut. Ive actually read these books when I was like 12 (Not my proudest moment as there not very good tbh but uh I was young) but hunter has crazy sexism and hatred of humans that should taken him out. He does some stupid shit that gets himself killed that I personally think he's more a Smug Snake. I actually think Hunter might qualify for the Complete Monster trope actually as he's got a decent sized rap-sheet for a YA novel of everything from having young teenage girls kidnapped and illegally trafficked to be used as food some of whom were twelve to corrupting a five year old and later attempting the extinction of humanity.
