Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Found this on YMMV.Pyewacket:

  • Magnificent Bastard: Pyewacket was able to trick Leah with numerous illusions, which it turns out were all part of the plan to make her think she's Genre Savvy. Even taking the form of the creepy pale demon was a calculated move to make Leah believe that anyone could be it in disguise. This results in Leah burning her mother to death, convinced she's the demon.

Having just seen the movie... cut.

Yeah, Pyewacket's crimes are just disgusting. He's a malevolent demon who mentally tortures a young woman and tricks her into burning her mother alive. It'd be like putting up Joan from Hereditary. They might have the skills, but the deeds are just horrific

Alright, here we go.

Last Chance to back out. Here be massive spoilers.

The premise of the show involves former Avengers Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) and The Vision (who should be dead), eventually joined by their extremely quick growing twins Tommy and Billy, staring inside sitcoms that advance through the decades each episode. It is clear that something is wrong, and it is eventually revealed that Wanda accidentally brainwashed the entire town to act what she considers to be a perfect life. With SWORD closing in (themselves experience infighting because a certain asshole is going in guns blazing), there is another threat who has been hanging around Wanda this entire time. Anges, the nosy neighbor, is nosy for a reason.

Who's been messing up everything?

It's been Agatha all along!

Agatha Harkness was once a witch back in the time of Salem Witch Trials who was accused by her coven of betraying them by dabbling in forbidden arts. The coven, led by her own mother, attempted to execute her despite her pleas, but she retaliated (intentionally or not) and killed them all. Now centuries later, she learns about Wanda Maximoff and her massive power. While Wanda knows that she has powers, she is unaware of their true power and true origin. But Agatha knows, and she wants that power.

Infiltrating the "Hex", the town of Westview brainwashed by Wanda into becoming a 50's sitcom, Agatha enters Wanda's house as Agnes and immediately befriends Wanda. At first, Agnes mostly hangs around to "unintentionally" provide comedic conflicts for Wanda and Vision such as tricking Wanda nearly wrecking the Dinner with the Boss, convincing the couple to participate in a talent show, and generally showing up with things that the family conveniently needs, much to Vision's suspicion. However, then she starts taking more underhanded actions, such as messing with "Herb's" (real name John Collins) head to make Vision realize that something was off and then killing the dog, Sparky, to make Wanda feel guilt about what she's doing.

To add more conflict, Agatha makes her biggest ploy yet: she takes a Westview citizen, Ralph Bohner, and brainwashes him to be Wanda's dead twin brother, Pietro (Quicksilver), seemingly brought back from the dead. For bonus points, the actor is Evan Peters, convincing the audience as well that this is Quicksilver. The fake Pietro gets close to Wanda and the twins, and Vision decides to take matters into his own hands, flying off to investigate what Wanda's magic is doing to the town. He comes across Agnes, who convinces him that she's another brainwashed victim of Wanda's magic, convincing Vision to attempt to leave town and nearly killing himself in the process. Wanda in reaction, expands the Hex to save Vision while also capturing the surrounding SWORD agents.

Now that Wanda is an emotional wreck, Agnes takes the twins into her house, ostentially to give Wanda some privacy. However, when SWORD agent Monica Rambeau, now with cool new powers, arrives to convince Wanda to end the Hex, Agnes reappears and takes Wanda into her house. But Wanda notices the kids aren't there, and Agnes tricks her into the basement. Trapping Wanda in a circle of her runes, Agatha reveals herself with, well this:

Now revealed, Agatha decides that she and Wanda will take a trip into the latter's memories in order to discuss the source of her power. Although Wanda claims that Hydra's experiments are where she got her powers from, Agatha is unconvinced, pointing out that she made a Stark missile fail against all probability when she was a child. It is here that it is shown that the Hex was a complete accident on Wanda's part, and that the Vision here was a copy that can only exist in the Hex.

Wanda escapes out into the streets, where Agatha holds that twins hostage, proclaiming Wanda as the prophesized "Scarlet Witch". Wanda launches her magic, forcing the twins out of her grasp, but allowing Agatha to absorb some her magic. As the twins flee, Wanda and Agatha do battle throughout the town (with interruption from SWORD's Project Cateract, the true Vision ressurrected, who is in turn distracted by the Westview Vision), with Agatha proclaiming her intent at absorbing the Scarlet Witch magic for herself. Agatha then releases control of the townspeople around Wanda, filling her with enough guilt to lower the Hex and allow the townspeople to escape, before putting back up when she releases that Vision and the twins will vanish as well.

Wanda tries to use illusions to defeat Agatha, but the witch gains the upper hand and makes Wanda a deal: if Wanda gives up her Scarlet Witch powers, she can fix everything, lowering the Hex while still keeping Vision and the twins alive. Wanda then starts blasting her power into her and also around her, seemingly agreeing, at which point Agatha reveals that she can't actually do anything about it. However, Wanda saw it coming and placed runes at the edge of the Hex, taking back her power and defeating Agatha.

Wanda decides that as punishment, Agatha will be forced to play the role of Agnes forever. Agatha protests, declaring that not only is the punishment cruel, but that Wanda has unleashed something big, however Wanda promises that she will free her if needed.

Who's been pulling every evil string?

It's been Agatha all along!

She easily plays damn near everyone like a fiddle. Even Vision, who suspected her, ends up falling victim to her manipulations. She successfully draws Wanda into her trap, uses psychological manipulation to almost force her to give in, and is only defeated by being outsmarted.

In terms of personality Agatha is goddamn hilarious in both of her personas, clearly enjoying the hell out of what she does. Beyond that, she makes pretty sound arguments, like how Wanda is torturing everyone in the town as well as pinpointing Wanda's emotional state from her backstory. Agatha not only grabs the attention in each scene that she's in, she deserves it. She only comes close to breaking when Wanda enforces her And I Must Scream fate upon her, and even then, she her arguments are perfectly legit (and also, it is a really cruel fate).

She's insidious!

So perfidious

That you haven't even noticed

And the pity is (the pity is, pity, pity, pity, pity)'

Well she killed her entire coven, killed a dog, nearly got Vision killed, threatened to kill the twins, and in general seemed to be willing to kill Wanda as well. She's not only evil, she makes it clear that she knows it. Despite this, she never really seems to go into spectacularly cruel territory. Yes, she kills a dog, but it's to cause conflict. She never even threatens the civilians, which is kind of amazing.

It's too late to fix anything

Now that everything has gone wrong

Thanks to Agatha (Ha!), naughty Agatha

It's been Agatha all along!

Still need to watch WandaVision, so not gonna look now.

Well I got a weird one...

What is the work?

Side Hustle is a beyond silly 2020 Nickelodeon show in which teen girls named Lex and Presley accidentally blow up their principal’s new boat with illegal fireworks and to pay him back get Presley’s science genius younger brother Fisher (who has a massive crush on Lex) to create an app for them called KidDING!. They use it to be hired for any job, anywhere, any time and trouble usually follows at every turn. The episode I'm talking about is the show’s fourth and it's called "Trashy Jobs".

Who is she and what has she done?

Ruby is Lex’s young cousin who’s roughly Fisher’s age and is around visiting for the weekend. It turns out Ruby was sent to science boarding school for causing mischief with her knowledge of science, specifically at one point doing something to a bridge that she wasn’t aware trains use. Immediately smitten with Fisher and instantly becoming jealous of his crush on Lex, Ruby plots to get out of spending time with Lex and Presley so she can be around and faun over Fisher instead (while she’s a Yandere certainly, it’s kind of meant to be endearing).

Ruby anonymously sends the girls a request on their app to go to the dump and sort through trash to find a specific toothbrush that’s zebra-themed and the girls just so happen to find one (Lex was insisting they turn the job down until as part of an arrangement the girls have with each other, Presley sprays mustard into her own mouth to get her to agree because she made that sacrifice). Ruby then anonymously sends the girls another request to use the toothbrush to clean out a trash compactor at the dump and to get them to do it when Lex is insisting they turn this job down (Ruby gets them to agree by doing the same mustard thing to herself that Presley did as well). Ruby then anonymously contacts the guy who works at the dump and gets him to close the girls inside the compactor without him knowing they’re in there.

The guy mistakenly turns the compactor on though and Lex and Presley nearly get crushed inside until their best friend Muchy (the principal’s son) throws the stuffed panda toy he was looking for into the gears. During the chaos, Presley figures out on her own that it was Ruby who set them up and it takes showing Lex the email address Ruby set up (NotRuby@fisherismine.com) to convince her. Presley then reaches out to Fisher (who Ruby is following around) to tell him Lex was turned into a trash cube (they put a hat Lex made on top of a trash cube).

Fisher and Ruby rush down there and after Fisher leaves, Ruby expresses regret at what happened to Lex and then she shows relief when Lex is revealed to be fine. Confronted for the things she did (though also calling the girls babies for overreacting), Ruby refuses at first to make things up to them by going to find all the pieces to Muchy’s panda in the compactor so he can put him back together (be a Lampshaded case of Came Back Wrong). Everyone gives her a Death Glare though and Ruby takes the toothbrush to go look.

Is she magnificent?

While the girls aren’t exactly the smartest, they’re not the dumbest characters on the show and Ruby’s scheme does require a reasonable bit of planning (her defeat is also not too humiliating since we don’t see her go searching through the trash for the pieces to Munchy’s panda after, so there’s that too).

Bitch? Too much?

Well despite tricking and trapping them and getting them to go to the dump on two different occasions, Ruby didn’t intend for the girls to nearly get crushed, was sad when she believed Lex had been turned into a cube, was relieved when Lex was revealed to be okay (to the point of hugging her) and then agreed to go look for the panda pieces as well after at first being reluctant to do so.

Verdict?

Uh...[tup] maybe? This is a stupid one I know, but I just thought what the hell? I’ve only seen so many of the 12 episodes that have aired at this time (just five and a half), but it’s clear these stories are each meant to be self-contained.

Since I can't sleep:

What's the work?

Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star is a manga that got Cut Short based on an anime I will slap you for not being able to guess. Spike and the gang are faced with the "Dragon Head Syndicate" (gee... wonder what inspired that name?) While sadly with only a few chapters before cancellation, we only get one major villain, the Scorpion!

Who is the Scorpion? What has he done?

Born Child Prodigy Ryushuka Niagle, Jr. Scorpion was kidnapped and brainwashed by the Dragon Head as a child. Using his intellectual prowess, he climbed the ranks to become one of their lieutenants by the age of 13. He comes into contact with our heroes when the crew of the Bebop are sent to a maximum security prison he's gotten himself incarcerated to scope out. Easily escaping when the time is right, the Scorpion is impressed with Ed's hacking skills and allows the Bebop to board his vessel... during which he promptly forces Spike down at gunpoint. He also rewrites Ed's hacking program to drive the Bebop haywire and forces them into a hasty retreat. Only leaving Spike alive in reference to a mysterious benefactor paying for his capture.

Next encountered on a tropical... moon... okay? He playfully warns Ed to stop collecting data on him while handing Spike back a fruit he had dropped from his grocery bag. Using Faye to steal the data Ed had collected on him, when she tries to force him to pay her for it Scorpion reveals he's faked his death to the public, causing her to flee with no bargaining chip.

In his final outing we meet Carlos, the man who kidnapped him and killed his sister in the process. Sent to rescue him from the Dragon Head by his wealthy grandfather, the group hatch a plan for Spike to board his vessel and subdue him with a tranquilizer. Unfortunately Scorpion just so happens to be deadly allergic and even as he's made preparations for Spike's aggression with a blast door, Faye's late arrival leads to it being lifted and Spike accidentally fatally shooting him, his body returned to his heartbroken grandfather.

Actions and personality?

He's a Faux Affably Evil mastermind so prominent the world's biggest criminal outfit just had to have him for themselves! While he's only in a few chapters before his death but he's got a great attention to detail, genius level IQ and can easily deal with wrenches thrown his way.

Mitigating factors?

None really, his allergy is a random last minute thing we find out about and there's no outsmarting him involved in it killing him.

Verdict?

First to come from expanded works.
