Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Okay everyone, since somebody had already beaten me to the punch with 2nd Dimension Charlene Doofenshmirtz (she's awesome), I'm just going to go ahead and propose a character from an old movie you may not know much about today. That film is Trouble in Paradise.

What's the Work?

Trouble In Paradise is a romantic comedy film from the early 30s, directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Herbert Marshall (Gaston Monescu) and Miriam Hopkins (Lily Vautier) as a pair of Con Artists who quickly admire each other's skills and become an Outlaw Couple. I'm thinking about proposing Marshall's character: The (in)famous Gaston Monescu.

What Has He Done?

Gaston Monescu is a famous international crook who's committed burglaries and thefts all over Europe.

Sometime before the film begins Gaston's been stated to encountered the wealthy Italian Monsieur Francois Filiba, as he had posed as a doctor who came to see about Filiba's tonsils. Filiba was confused as there was nothing wrong with his tonsils, but Filiba gave in and decide to let the doctor see tonsils, opening his mouth, and not too long afterward, he was knocked out by Monescu. The Monsieur regained his conscience but found out his pocketbook was gone. More specifically, it was stolen by Gaston.

We first see Gaston in Italy impeccably-dressed as a gentleman on his hotel balcony with a waiter addressing him as "baron". Gaston is preparing for an intimate, romantic dinner in his hotel suite. He wanted the supper to be marvelous and the night to be memorable. His dinner guest turns out to be a beautiful, attractive lady known as Lily Vautier and also known as a "countess". The two of them spring a conversation about the rich life, then almost immediately get acquainted with each other as they both discover each others' true con artist natures and put their crook skills to action, leading to a nice little sparring-match of pick-pocketing theft and the duo returning a couple of valuables they had secretly stolen from each other, while also declaring their love for each other.

Some time later, Gaston went to Geneva, Switzerland where he robbed the Peace Conference and "took practically everything except the peace". He was arrested and had his stolen goods confiscated, but he somehow managed to escape from prison in a way that's never explained.

Then the next day in France, Madame Mariette Colet — the wealthy, widowed owner of a famous perfume company — purchased a crazy-expensive diamond-encrusted evening bag, which quickly becomes Gaston's next target for stealing. He attends an opera performance and gets ahold of the purse when Colet leaves the room, and manages to avoid being spotted.

The next day, Gaston and Lily are hanging out in a simple Parisian hotel room and at this point, it's been a full year since they first met in Venice. Lily discovers a press advertisement in a newspaper she's reading — an offer of 20,000 francs reward for the return of Mme. Colet's lost evening bag. She encourages the resourceful Gaston to "be honest about it" and return it for the reward.

He goes to the Colet mansion he hands over the stolen bag to claim the reward, under the fake name "Monsieur La Valle". While there, he flirts with and charms Madame Colet by emptying her purse (to prove that the contents were indeed hers) and learning its safely-guarded secrets, and claiming to have read one of her love letters from the Major. Colet was unable to keep her end of the deal and pay him because she couldn't find her checkbook. But Gaston didn't mind as he continues to feign elegance, look around her house and dazzle her. He's somehow able to detect that 100,000 francs were in her safe and records the numbers of the lock's combination for memory. He encourages her to keep even more cash on hand, while reprimanding her for being fiscally irresponsible. He sets her up - with shrewd "business" sense (mainly to be his next victim) and convinces her to immediately hire him as her new personal secretary.

The next morning, Gaston/LaValle dictates to his assistant secretary - Lily. She has been hired on by him as part of their concerted plot to conspire to have the economically-vulnerable Madame Colet keep 850,000 francs in cash in her safe at home so that she can be conveniently victimized. Although he didn't want her jewelry. Lily is unexpectedly called by Madame Colet to come to her room. At Madame Colet's bedside as the lady of the house has 'breakfast-in-bed,' Lily plays up her role as an ugly, unfortunate orphan who must take care of a little brother. Mme. Colet expresses worry over Monsieur LaValle's serious hard-work habits, arousing Lily's fear of the sexual temptations that Gaston faces in working for Mme. Colet, and the effort Mme. Colet is taking to insure their privacy after-hours. She accused Gaston partner of enjoying the allure of personal sex (with Mme. Colet) as well as money. Gaston jutifies this by saying he can afford to wait just a bit longer - that will ensure a full safe with 850,000 francs. Lily jealously fears losing Gaston to the guarded, penetrative intimacies of sex with Mme. Colet, and he defines her own attraction for Gaston only in terms of his criminality.

That night at the end of the work day (5:00 pm), Gaston and Madame Colet spend an hours long affair together and it once again takes Gaston's mind off of theving.

And the next day at a garden tea party, Colet introduces Gaston/"LaValle" to many of her guests, including Filiba - his former robbery victim in Venice. It is their second meeting together, but Filiba doesn't recognize him — not yet at least. Monsieur Giron begins to suspect La Valle is an imposter and questions him about his familial connections in Marseilles, which intentionally successfully manages to avoid.

Filiba suddenly realizes that he has seen La Valle somewhere before. His memory is triggered by the sight of a gondola-shaped ashtray as he snuffs out his cigarette and he remembers the circumstances of their first meeting in Venice. La Valle nervously tells Lily that their ruse is at risk of being exposed. Before leaving the party, Filiba confronts La Valle, but the latter cleverly distracts and diverts Filiba's potential accusations with a shower of confusing questions and fanciful erotic suggestions.

To make their fast getaway, Gaston orders two first class/sleeper tickets to Berlin on the night express train for Lily and himself. Then to appease Mme. Colet, he also orders five dozen "deep red roses," instructing the floral shop to attach a card to the basket to be delivered the next morning: "In memory of the late Monsieur La Valle."

That night, Mme. Colet is invited to attend a dinner engagement at the Major's during which time Monsieur La Valle intends to rob her safe and disappear forever. However another encounter to La Valle gets her to change her to change her mind about attending, and she walks back up the stairs at 7:50 pm to his office to join him. La Valle tries to convince her go and the two engage in a discreet affair, with Colet making finger-snapping sexual advances and she's willing to ruin his reputation by loving him. This changes her mind about not to the dinner, and Gaston changes his mind about his midnight getaway.

That late night, Filiba's memory gets triggered again and officially finds out La Valle was actually Gaston Monescu all this time. Word quickly spreads around Paris and Monsieur Adolphe Giron confronts Gaston as "Monsieur Monescu" and threatens to call the police unless he evacuates Mme. Colet's mansion by the next morning. But Gaston in defense counter-accuses the trustworthy accountant Giron of being a crook himself for not calling the police earlier and fraudulently embezzling the perfume company's funds.

At this point, Lily is just about fed up with Gaston's constant setbacks due his love with Colet and she opens Colet's safe and steals the money herself. Then, Mme. Colet returns home from her dinner engagement, where she has been told that Gaston was the Venezian thief who robbed Filiba. Upstairs in Gaston's presence in his bedroom, Mme. Colet starts disrobing.

Mme. Colet begins opening the wall safe to place her jewels there. Gaston (not wanting her to find out about the stolen money) attempts to distract her, and then boldfacedly exposes Adolphe's robbery of the Colet Company funds, protecting her from criminal forces in her own trust. At first she doesn't believe him. When he picks up the phone to notify the officials, she persuades him otherwise. Gaston reveals his own true identity as a "self-made crook" and claims that he stole the money - devastating and crushing Mme. Colet's love for him with his genuine honesty. Lily approaches Mme. Colet, jealous of her partner's infatuation with the wealthy widow. Lily regains Gaston's exclusive love as she admits to robbing her alone and decides to ditch her unfaithful partner.

Gaston realizes he's truly in love with Lily and regretfully bids Mme. Colet a final goodbye, advising her to look carefully at her illusory life and acknowledging that his arrest is imminent. She sadly but willingly lets him part as a romantic partner and surrenders her necklace (which he pickpocketed) as a gift to Lily.

The film ends with the two crooks escaping in a taxi showing off the purse and 100,000 francs they had managed to steal. Oh, and also they get away with all of their thefts.

Is He Magnificent?

Oh, yeah, Gaston Monescu as absolutely magnificent to a T. Considering he's had an infamous reputation as a world-known international cook, he's been committing robberies and stealing valuables, long before the events of the film. And on the rare occasions he ever gets caught by the authorities or police, he always manages to plan an incredible getaway and escape.

Although, Gaston's also an absolute gentleman who can charm pretty much anyone and fool them into thinking he's just a harmless man, and deeply loves Lily after their first encounter and respects her Con Artist skills. Technally, he and Lily are Partners and Crime and committed crimes for a year, but he's clearly proven to be the bigger brains of the group, doing most of the manipulation and planning.

Gaston's also a master planner and a Master of Disguise, based in the beginning where posed as a doctor, knocked a rich man out and pickpocketed him. Yeah, he's amazing at that too. And as for the main apsect where he stole Colet's valuable purse, he took advantage of reward promise if the purse was returned, created a fake identity (LaValle) to draw her attention away, and convinced Colet to make him her new secretary, allowing him and Lily to get closer to Colet's money supply. Then when the duo was at risk of their ruse being exposed, he was somehow able to detect that Giron never called the police on him because he was a crook was well and turns his actions back on him. Then his love for Colet eventually overcomes him and he nearly pulls a Heel–Face Turn all together. Like I said, nearly.

And since this is a Pre-Code film — made before movies required Big Bads and Villain Protagonists to get some form of commuppeance (via, arrest, death, etc.) — He and Lily are allow to make a safe getaway and not get caught.

Also, aside from speaking English, he also knows fluent Russian and German. That alone is enough to warrant a spot on here.

Is He A Bastard? Too much?

Well, considering he's the lead character of the film and one half off a criminal couple, the question is less, "Is he too much of a bastard", and more "Is he enough of a bastard"... to which a say ... yes.

Gaston may be an elegant and charming man with respect and charisma for others, but don't forget, he's still a famous thief with an incredible reputation he's left behind. Don't let his kindness fool you. The main reason he went to Colet's place was to return her valuable purse hoping to get rich off of it, then when a couple of drawbacks occurred, he just found a way to trick Colet into gathering her money hoping to steal it for him and Lily. Even though he does eventually fall in love with Colet, it still doesn't change every he had done up to that point. He nearly went to prison for his actions. The film makes no attempt to hide his amoral nature, and honestly... I don't really mind.

What The Competition Like?

Well, the only real competition Gaston has is his partner in crime, Lily Vautier. And she holds up a very great fight in that retrospect. She's an excellent pickpocketer, and a master of creates fake identities and every bit of cunning as her male counterpart. The reason I'm not doing a duo proposal is that Gaston had more of his history explained and got far more screentime thanks to his scenes with Colet. As a result, I'm just going to assume he's the smarter half of the duo. Who knows, maybe Lily is MB material.

The Verdict

I really hope you appreciated taking some time to read my proposal for an obscure oldie that shouldn't be taken for granted. And based on all of the evidence and details I had provided throughout the proposal, I feel like Gaston has earned his reputation as being so infamous. Well, it's all up to you guys now...
