Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Late yes to Edmond Dantes, The Count of Monte Cristo. Jim Caviezel kills 6.

Fun fact: there’s a nod to the book in the ’Person of Interest’’ episode “Witness”, since Caviezel played Dantes (the episode also introduced MB Carl Elias).

Hearty yeah to Shakespeare! Good catch, Lighty.

Per that same conversation with Lighty, here's another one possibly overlooked. So to the round it off... Amakusa's and Will's third and final partner.

What's the work?

The aforementioned Fate Apocrypha.

Who is the candidate? The character’s actions?

Rounding off the Big Bad Triumvirate, we have the Wise Queen of Assyria, Co-Dragons to Amakusa alongside Shakespeare, Semiramis.

(Also, to be clear, I'm primarily using the Apocrypha light novel as the basis here since the anime leaves out or changes quite a bit of information.)

Born from the Syrian mermaid goddess Derketo and a human man, she was left on the waterfront by her loveless mother. She was wrapped in the warm wings of a dove, and fed with the dove's milk. Semiramis was then found and educated by the shepherd Simmas until she married Onnes, an old general; but she was then taken away by the Syrian king Ninus who fell in love with her thanks to her beautiful face. This forced Onnes to commit suicide, and after Semiramis earned the favors of the king with original battle plans, she married him and formally became queen. A few days after the marriage, she killed the king with poison, and reigned as a regent over Assyria for the next few decades. This is the oldest case of murder by poisoning in legends. This is the basis of her poison-related skills in Fate/Apocrypha proper as well as her Assassin class designation.

Semiramis is summoned by Shirou Kotomine, in a rare case of a "Double Summon" where she displays both the skills of an Assassin and Caster, and is deeply involved with his plan of salvation. Unable to understand his intentions, she even considers searching for a new puppet to act as her Master rather than dealing with him, but she eventually comes to respect him and consider his wish to be her own. Using materials gathered in Iran, they construct her Hanging Gardens of Babylon to act as their main base while proceeding with other plans.

After gathering other Masters of the Red Faction, she uses her doves to deliver a message to the final Red Master and Servant, Kairi Sisigou and Saber of Red Mordred to initiate a meeting at the Sighisoara church. After Saber is materialized at the urging of Shirou, he has her reveal herself from her Presence Concealment (a class skill for Assassins meant for, well, assassination that does exactly what the name implies). As she jokingly teases him by reaching her hand out towards his, she is lightly chided by Shirou and backs away while stifling her laughter. As the discussions on the state of the war proceed, Saber is annoyed with her haughty attitude as Shirou asks for her true name. Assassin then becomes somewhat angered as Kairi declines to reveal it and refuses cooperation, but Shirou keeps her in check.

Upon their departure, she immediately suggests sending an agent after them to kill the uncertainty of their future existence, but Shirou rejects it on the basis of keeping from infighting between allies. She scoffs at the idea, but he feels that they will cooperate so long as their interests coincide with the defeat of the Black Faction. He then asks her about the completion of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and she mentions that the ritual will take three days. Their conversation is interrupted by Caster of Red's arrival, chanting a line from Richard III. Here is where the dynamics of this Villainous Friendship is established.

Revealing that Berserker of Red has begun a march on the Black Faction, she is shocked to the point of losing all words, but Shirou is relatively calm. As he makes plans, Assassin is angered by the situation, with the unready Red Faction being forced into action against the heavily fortified Black Faction. As it is revealed that Caster was the one who encouraged Berserker's movement, she becomes even more irritated, but follows Shirou's command to alert Archer of Red to follow Berserker. Later on, as Shirou attempts to convince the controlled Masters to relinquish control of their Servants to him fully, she tells him that he cannot accomplish it at the moment. Her solution? Her best battle of tea (or wine) laced with a Noble Phantasm-induced poison to make them more docile.

The conversation trails on to Shirou musing over the nature of kings summoned as Servants, and she describes what it means to be a ruler. She abruptly quiets afterword, apologizing that such thoughts must have been an annoyance. The conversation causes Shirou to think over the situation, noting that their positions would seem more natural if reversed with him as the Servant and her the Master. Assassin concurs in that she is used to being served, but that serving another is a new experience. Asking if he would like to switch, he declines due to her having been notorious as a despot in life. In a good mood, they repeat their original words to each other from after her summoning, causing a rare moment of uncontrolled laughter from Assassin. She mentions that the situation seemed absurd to her at first, but now she believes him to be truly fascinating.

So, the Red Faction Servants eventually come to see they've been hoodwinked and that their contracts now belong to Shirou Kotomine. Once tensions are resolved (or at least buried for now), the second phase of the war begins. The Black Faction scurries away to regroup and re-strategize, leading to an assault on the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Now, Semiramis is not a combat-oriented Servant as befitting of an Assassin, so she instead relies on her flying fortress, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, that she controls utterly in a game of supreme firepower,a little strategy and tactics, and good old magecraft from the Age of Gods to wipe out the attack.

Eventually, in her throne room, she's besieged by Mordred and Sisigou. A hard-fought battle ensures where Mordred lands a critical blow... but in the process, so does Sisigou. It's revealed Semiramis somehow survived the battle and went to the core of the Gardens to assist Amakusa with the Grail. When Amakusa is defeated, Semiramis takes one final moment in her crumbling Gardens to finally express her love to the villainous Ruler with a kiss before fading away.

Magnificent (Charming, Charismatic, Intelligence, etc.)? Why or why not?

Semiramis is a very enthusiastic person who indulges in luxury and "exudes a decadent atmosphere from somewhere." Since her childhood, she has studied a wide range of disciplines such as cosmetics, hairdressing, dancing, clothing, music and astronomy. Her passion has led her to start a war to possess a single man, and to poison her husband, the king, for politics, but her abilities as a queen are indisputable.

With her dove familiars, Semiramis uses them throughout the entirety of Romania to act as a network of scouts to carry messages and collect information. Taking pieces of paper in their mouths, they can locate their targets, deliver the message, and immediately leave upon completion. They can track down magical energy sources, especially those possessed by Servants, allowing them to keep track of their locations any time upon entering the country. And that information does come in handy for both herself and Amakusa in the war efforts.

During Amakusa's big checkmate moment that marks Apocrypha's halfway point, by combining her Presence Concealment and her poisons, Semiramis was able to easily slip a hypnotic drug into the tea of all the Red Fractions Master allowing Shirou the opportunity to manipulate them. When the Faction of Black mounts an assault, Semiramis sits upon throne all calm and self-assured weaving tons of spells and using her Garden's armaments to great, strategic effect. The light novel goes into great detail how she goes right to work. A moment of quick-thinking occurs when Achilles, who is a monster badass, tries to impale her, Semiramis weaves a hide of scales to block his spear—all based on Achilles's own legend—to protect herself.

Now, Semiramis takes a moment after poisoning Mordred with hydra venom to offer a We Can Rule Together. This bites her when . That said, she had no way of knowing Sisigou possessed an antidote. And even then, because Mordred's Master sustained lethal damage in the crossfire, Semiramis gets the last laugh when Mordred vanishes from the Grail War right after their fight. Through both sheer will and her connection to Amakusa, Semiramis hangs on long enough to provide some manner of assistance in the final battle.

Also, it turned out she was right in suggesting to send out an agent to kill Sisigou.

Semiramis has a, shall we say, "sharper" streak to her compared to Amakusa and Shakespeare. Mordred's attitude gets on her nerves and Achilles calling an esteemed empress like her "cute" ruffles her feathers, yet there are either brief, ephemeral moments where Semi promptly goes back to being a dark Lady of War or a harmless gag.

Bastard? Not too much of one?

Kairi Sisigou's first impression of her is someone whose murders were not done in secret, but all deliberated and premeditated acts brought forth from a single glance or word that would cause her targets to die by the hands of others. Mordred compares her to Morgan, her own mother, citing that Semiramis "has the same smell." An apt observation seeing as Semiramis is pretty decent in the art of manipulation like la Fey herself. Beyond that, she's fully complicit with Shirou's goals with the Grail, which will have disastrous (supposedly) effects on the world. To say nothing of her backstory, which is where she received her infamy as a poisoner and Assassin.

Yet, Semiramis isn't "evil" per se. She can certainly be ruthless, but she bears genuine love and respect towards Amakusa as well as a (begrudging) Villainous Friendship with Shakespeare.

Competition?

Amakusa is the main MB and runs the show, Shakespeare has his own thing that he does with grand style as said in his own EP. Semiramis's actions, however, show they are a team. She helps out with big strategic moments, creating the tea to make the Black Faction Masters more easily manipulated as well as abating the Red Faction with her Hanging Gardens.

Conclusion?

Not the strongest keeper of the three, but I believe she edges out enough to join her fellows on this trope.

I have been meaning to do this effortpost around Christmas but I just now got around to watching the whole film so here it is...

What is the work?

The Silent Partner is a 1978 heist film. When bank teller, Miles Cullen notices a note saying "I have a gun, hand over the money", as well as a sketchy looking mall Santa, Miles decides to use this as an opportunity to steal the bank's money for himself.

Who is he? What has he done?

Miles Cullen is a bank teller, discovering a note saying "I have a gun, hand over the money" , as well as noticing a mall Santa Claus hanging around outside the bank, noticing that his "give to charity" sign mirrors the spelling on the note, he puts two and two together and figures that he is the would-be robber.

Anticipating this Miles stashes almost all of the cash in a lunch box that he puts in his briefcase. When the Santa Claus robber holds up Miles at the teller's desk, Miles, having expected his doing so, hands over the small amount he left at his booth before pressing a clip where the hundred dollar bills are activating the silent alarm and camera, the police immediately arrive and the imposter Santa Claus named Harry gets into a shoot out with them before he makes his escape.

Miles puts the money in a safety deposit box and lies to his superior that he was scared by the note when he qysstions why he didn't push the clip sooner.

Recognizing that Miles didn't give him all the money Harry begins threatening Miles and ransacks Miles house to find the . Miles frames Harry by stealing a delivery van and leaving a gun in it, he parks the van where Harry lives and goes into a telephone booth, tipping the cops off while disguising his voice so the call can'tbe traced back to him, successfully orchestrating Harry's arrest. When brought to the police station to identify Harry in a lineup, Miles does not point him out, aware that Harry would then implicate him in the bank robbery.

Miles meets Elaine who is secretly working for Harry to keep tabs on Miles as well as find where he is keeping the deposit key, when Miles cleaning lady throws out the jar of jelly that contained the key, Miles enlists Elaine's help to retrieve the cash. Since Julie usually takes care of the safety deposit boxes, Miles waits until she goes for lunch, then has Elaine pose as a customer who lost her key.

Calling a locksmith to get the deposit box open and obtain a new key, spotting Julie, Miles distracts her long enough for Elaine to take her leave without Julie noticing her.

Harry released out of jail breaks into Miles house and kills Elaine after she refuses to work with him anymore. Miles finds Elaine's corpse disposes of her body in the foundation of the bank's new building, under construction.

Harry confronts Miles and threatens to kill him if he doesn't give him the money. Miles agrees, but insists it be handed over in a public place where no harm can come to him. They agree that Harry will come to the bank, again in disguise, and be handed the money at Miles's window, where Miles will feel safe. The next day, Harry arrives dressed as a woman. After Miles hands a packet, Harry says he intends to kill him anyway, for all the problems Miles has caused him. Anticipating that Harry was intending that, Miles hands him the original stick-up note, and shouts "he has a gun", triggering the alarm. Harry panics, pulls out his gun, and shoots Miles, then flees into the mall, where he is shot by the bank security guard. A gravely wounded Harry tells the guard that Miles gave him the bank's money; the guard, not comprehending Harry's meaning, responds, "Whose money did you expect?"

Is he a bastard?

Usually being a bank teller stopping a murderous armed bank robber from stealing would make you a good guy but Miles is only preventing him from having the money so he can steal and keep it for himself, he is also shown to be quite crooked in the ways he goes about it like stealing a van and such.

Is he smart? Is he charming?

He has great observation skills able to match the writing on the note with the give to charity sign to figure out who the would-be robber is and shows some pretty quick thinking, anticipating and foiling Harry's schemes multiple times.
