"Moments" cleanup and maintenance (Awesome, Funny, Heartwarming, Shocking, Tear Jerker)

Go To

See here for Nightmare Fuel, which has frequent enough problems to deserve a thread of its own.

A while ago, I made a thread for cleaning up Nightmare Fuel pages, since they tend to attract all sorts of gushing about anything vaguely unsettling, as well as violations of Example Indentation and the Spoiler Policy among other problems. Well, other Moments pages have similar issues, though to a slightly lesser extent, so they may as well have a cleanup thread too.

"Moments" reactions should:

  • Be free of spoiler tags, in accordance with the Spoilers Off policy which states that:
Fridge, Headscratchers, and the various Moments subpages (Tear Jerker, Moment of Awesome, etc.) are for post-viewing discussions. Spoiler tagging there defeats the purpose of the articles. You shouldn't be going there if you are worried about them.
  • Be based on things that actually have happened, not things that could happen, will happen, or might have happened. Speculation belongs only on the Wild Mass Guessing pages.
  • Have affected the writer of the entry themselves. If you don't find something funny or sad, let someone who did add it to Funny Moments or Tear Jerker.
  • Elicit a strong reaction. Not every single time a character accomplishes something is an Awesome Moment, not every attempt at comedy is a Funny Moment, not every time someone does something nice is a Heartwarming Moment, and not every unhappy event is a Tear Jerker.
  • Explain why they're so awesome/funny/sad: Zero Context Examples aren't allowed on this wiki. Your description should allow anyone to understand your reaction.

Moment images have their own Image Pickin' cleanup thead.

This is going to sound dumb, but I assume indentation rules apply to Moments pages as well?

Yes they do. I don't read moments pages that much, but I assume from your question that a lot of them are poorly indented?

So I found out that Funny.Deltarune has a "Other/Meta" section. And since we are not allowed to add meta moments, I'm wondering which one are kosher and which ones are not since a few (namely the sweepstakes) are actual events.

One troper removed a bunch of Tear Jerker examples from TearJerker.TheSuperMarioBrosMovie today, citing them as shoehorns. But are they, though?

  • The Penguins. While their moments are generally Played for Laughs, it can be painful to see the Penguin King's look of despair when he sees Bowser successfully toppling his kingdom and him finding the Super Star. The poor guy is basically Forced to Watch as everything he and his penguin followers built and worked so hard for was just casually destroyed by a psychopathic megalomaniac in a snap.
  • In a solemn Show, Don't Tell scene, as Luigi is being kidnapped by the Shy Guys he reminisces about how when he had his toy castle destroyed by a bully as a baby, Mario helped and protected him. He then looks at the ropes binding his wrists together, and out over the Darklands as the Shy Guys take him to Bowser. Since the scene does not have a single word of dialogue, one can only imagine what Luigi must be thinking. Sounds fine
  • While the captured and imprisoned Luma, Lumalee, and his nihilism and extreme longing of wanting to be dead is played for Black Comedy, you can't help but feel sad and depressed that this once very likely Cheerful Child has been reduced to this nihilistic state possible thanks to many months of being imprisoned in a cage over a pit of lava. While Black Comedy for some, it may well be depressing to others, so I think this is fine
  • While Mario and Luigi's dad complimenting his oldest son, Mario, for saving Brooklyn is mainly a heartwarming moment, Mario having a very shocked expression in response can come across as sad due to just how surprised Mario is to see his dad actually complimenting him and being proud of him implying that this is a very rare moment for the two of them. I think this relies on too much speculation

Also, this opening to the Tear Jerker page...

While The Super Mario Bros. Movie is no doubt a fun adventure for the whole family, don't drop your guard into thinking that moments where the waterworks can be turned on won't be present in the movie.

...was removed by the same troper because "[they] didn't hear anyone crying when [they] were watching it at the movie theater". Even if some of the above moments are shoehorns, this is starting to disregard the fact that Tear Jerker is subjective.

[up]I think the last one might be Fridge Sadness and I agree that the subbullet on the first example falls into that too. I also feel the opening should be brought back and I agree that the second example is fine.

I noticed Funny.Dong Bang Shinki has a ZCE problem combined with Weblinks Are Not Examples. The entire page is filled with weblinks, with little a source (e.g. a show or something the video originated from, so that even if the link is dead one can search up the source) to be found. I've already removed two ZC Es whose links were dead, but there are still a few left.

The Dangerous Love behind-the-scenes example also says that two real people who have never publicly dated have Unresolved Sexual Tension (there was another mention along that line I removed with the dead links), in addition to being a ZCE. I only couldn't remove it outright because there could be some substance to be saved, but since you have to explain individual opinions (if you don't, the reason why you found that funny will be left a mystery), it's safe to cut, right?

Sorry if it's hard to read, I just have a lot of thoughts I have trouble explaining. tongue

Awesome.Nintendo Direct gets quite gushy at some entries, to the point where it feels more like an And the Fandom Rejoiced page. This is one such example that was added recently, practically the subbullet:

  • Fans went into the June 2023 Direct with many questions, as Nintendo's first-party lineup for the rest of the year being completely unknown outside Pikmin 4 and miscellaneous DLC, some wondered if the second half of the year would be barren. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. In addition to more news about Pikmin 4 and that various DLC, Nintendo themselves would drop HD ports of the first two Pikmin games immediately after the show, finally re-announce the Detective Pikachu sequel (now titled Detective Pikachu Returns), and give us a second WarioWare Switch entry in WarioWare: Move It, a direct sequel to Smooth Moves on the Wii. On the third party side, we got a new Dragon Quest Monsters in The Dark Prince, a HD-2D remake of Star Ocean: The Second Story, a Batman: Arkham Trilogy collection, confirmation that the Switch would also be receiving Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, and a first look at Penny's Big Breakaway, the first original game from the development team behind Sonic Mania.
    • However, it's the Mario fans who got the most out of this Direct. A remake of the much-beloved Super Mario RPG, with composer Yoko Shimomura returning to compose the soundtrack? A teaser for a new game starring Princess Peach!? A HD remaster of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon!?! And a new 2D Mario game with a gorgeous new art-style, vibrant animation, and a playable Daisy!?!? With all this news coming off the back of The Super Mario Bros. Movie's success earlier that year, the future of the franchise is looking even better than ever before!

What to do?

I noticed that pages for Cupcakes (Sergeant Sprinkles) (an infamous My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Dark Fic where Pinkie Pie tortures Rainbow Dash to death) had many examples that are actually from Recursive Fanfiction rather than the story itself. This extended to the Moments pages, which were mostly made of such examples.

Awesome.Cupcakes Sergeant Sprinkles, Funny.Cupcakes Sergeant Sprinkles, and TearJerker.Cupcakes Sergeant Sprinkles only have one example each, while Heartwarming.Cupcakes Sergeant Sprinkles is nothing but fan content and should be cut entirely (there's nothing heartwarming in the whole fanfic, trust me). I'm thinking of cutting these pages and moving the valid examples to the YMMV page.

The "meta" section from Funny.Friday Night Funkin was recently removed — however, most of the examples weren't meta, as they were content related to the game, such as the kickstarter or funny filenames. Is it alright if I restore these examples?

#1271: Jul 5th 2023 at 4:12:49 AM

[up] Everything is good except these examples in the "Other" folder:

  • A popular joke within the fandom was the idea that an Undertale character, possibly Sans, would join the roster of Super Smash Bros.. However, when Deltarune released on October 31st with a Smash reference in the epilogue, multiple characters telling them to "come back tomorrow" and a Smash Ultimate Direct the very next day, some fans thought it might actually be happening. It ultimately turned out to be sheer coincidence, but for that short period of time...
    • Then Sans actually got into Smash Bros. almost a year later, as a DLC costume for the Mii Gunner. What's more? The fact that Smash Bros. canonically exists in Deltarune means that Sans is logically a Mii Gunner costume there too; fans wasted no time in pointing out the absurdity of Kris finding their weird neighbor as a costume in one of their video games.
  • This excerpt from the game's wiki:
"Tasque Manager's design and personality are plausibly a play on the internet's affinity for cat-like characters, maids, and whips. Said affinity has been particularly prevalent in the community's response to the character."
    • The reviews from actual, real people are no slouch either.
Derek W: Hes in my house. 10/10, opened it and I think Spamton is in my house now, absolutely recommended!
Humbaynoob: I got a defect and it just made the product 10x funnier. They bent my pipis but I’m not gonna return it because I find it 100x funnier I got a slight defect in a product that’s supposed to be a scam
    • In a much more meta sense, it's quite ironic that a character known for being a failure of a salesman has plenty of merch dedicated to him that can not only actually sell, but also empties stock within minutes of release. The fake UI depicting a constantly-increasing number of customers and users who "[Liked this!]" might as well not be an exaggeration; fans were so quick to buy what is essentially a party giftbag that the store quickly limited orders to one purchase per person and still sold out. Not to mention how they're preparing a plushie doll the following year—something normally reserved for the likes of Ralsei and Lancer.
      • Even Temmie and Toby themselves expressed surprise at fan reaction towards Spamton, particularly after playtesters expressed how unsettled they were at him. In his same Tweet, Toby refers to the merch of the character as "promotional trash" that Fangamer now has to order seven times the stock of to meet popular demand.
Toby Fox: ... uh, is that good?
  • Playing with the stats and manipulating save data can net some interesting discoveries:
    • You cannot defeat the Sweet Cap'n Cakes no matter how high your attack is, even if you use SnowGrave, which is outright stated to be lethal.
    • Giving your party negative stats nets some odd results such as Susie's Rude Buster healing the enemy and Ralsei's heals practically being suicide. Strangely, IceShock with deep negative stats does more damage than Snowgrave (which becomes 0 damage).

This also either needs to be given context or commented out:

The Trainwreckords entries for Todd in the Shadows' funny page largely cite You Tube comments as funny moments. Not ones Todd makes on his own videos, or ones that he brings up within videos. Just comments on his videos, or, in some examples, comments on other people's videos that just happen to mention Todd. Is that allowed, or is it too meta? It makes the entries quite long, and they're not moments Todd himself is responsible for. Here's a few examples from the entry for his Funstyle video:

  • In lieu of a music video for "Bollywood" (the song doesn't have an official one), Todd instead shows looped footage of one of Liz Phair's interviews (which becomes more and more distorted as the song goes on), before replacing it with footage of a dance number from, well, a Bollywood film. The interview footage becomes a Running Gag throughout the rest of the video (since the album only had one real music video), punctuated with everything from other film clips to a single gif of her on-stage to slowly warping stock images.
  • In a meta example, there's a darkly humorous quality to this entry from the video's comments section:
Kirkhammer is my Waifu: "MTV Unplugged" by Lauryn Hill was literally a woman mid-breakdown live onstage and THIS still sounds more unhinged.

The section on Summer in Paradise also has a meta example, followed by another Youtube comment (the context is that they're talking about John Stamos' "Forever" cover):

  • Meta-wise, while Todd doesn't mention it, in Full House, it was also their only hit: it got to #68 on the charts in Americanote  before plummeting to #99 (although it did hit #1 in Japan), and then two seasons later, when Jesse became too preoccupied with his home life, the band kicked him out, had him replaced with Barry Williams almost immediately, and pumped out a #1 hit song the same week.
  • In another meta example, capping the entire Stamos coverage off is this comment on the video's YouTube upload that Todd himself favorited:
Ali: Throughout this video John Stamos kept popping up like a cut out of a villan [sic] on a Disney ride and it genuinely unnerved me until Todd finally explained it. Then it just made me sick

I don't think citing the comments of random viewers really counts as funny moments for Todd's show.

Also, I would like to admit that, on Todd's awesome moments page, I made an edit a while back about how the man behind "Your Woman" saw and enjoyed Todd's video, even editing the description of the "Your Woman" official video to mention Todd's fans. But I feel like that's different-a musician (one with a top 40 hit no less) having a favorable reaction to Todd's video on him as an awesome moment is different than citing a bunch of random viewers commenting on Todd's videos as funny moments.

Found this on TearJerker.Lost Judgment

  • For extra Fridge Tearjerker, in the English dub of the game, Okuda is voiced by Jamieson Price, while Sawa is voiced by Erica Lindbeck, a.k.a, Sojiro and Futaba Sakura. With that in mind, watch this scene again and try not think of your favorite coffee dad grieving for his beloved daughter.

Very blantant Fan Myopia on this one. Any other thoughts?
