[up] Which is why I think they intentionally called attention to it in IW. I believe you're right, they didn't really show it in Homecoming at all and may have regretted that decision so it was an Author's Saving Throw.

Man, I need to rewatch Homecoming. I only saw it on a plane.

Blame it on the reboots Sony did, they had to do a spider film that had to set it apart from the ones before them,no spider sense since that's always in Spiderman

Makes me wish we had the Marvel Cinematic universe sooner so the previous Spider man films count

The films have always had trouble showcasing Peter's Spider-Sense. It's regularly ignored for the sake of letting him be blindsided by attacks. It might show up once or twice in a film, but be ignored in the rest of the action presumably because it's just easier to write a balanced fight scene where both sides give as hard as they get if you forget that one character has precognitive threat detection.

The original Raimi film has a scene where Peter senses the Goblin Glider behind him and dodges, allowing it to impale Norman Osborn; however, the credit for that doesn't belong to the filmmakers. The whole third act is a direct adaptation of "The Night Gwen Stacy Died", with that scene being lifted directly from the comic.

When the filmmakers are left to play in their own sandbox, we wind up with shit like Harry Osborn totally blindsiding Peter on his scooter in Spider-Man 3. Amazing 2 had a phenomenal Spider-Sense sequence during the first confrontation with Electro, but it happens in Amazing 2 so it's easy to forget.

For MCU Spidey, we do see him using his Spider-Sense in his first outing. Not Homecoming but Civil War.

So it's pretty clear that he does have it. It's just that Homecoming, like the movies that precede it, got lazy with his choreography.

It's only a proud descendant of the comics, in which Spidey's sense is highly selective.

Considering how often the books have to write out the Spider sense with gas or enemies it just doesn't ping or that time he just had it burned out for a while maybe it was a mistake to begin with

It's iconic but maybe not good

When the filmmakers are left to play in their own sandbox, we wind up with shit like Harry Osborn totally blindsiding Peter on his scooter in Spider-Man 3.

It did go off, just too late. You see Peter's eyes widen just a moment before Harry starts the fight, which indicates that it came too fast for him to dodge.

I think sometimes, Peter knows it's going off, but doesn't recognize where the danger is coming from until it's too late (like in the Sinister 6 episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man, where he doesn't expect the attack of Sandman because Rhino is right in front of him.

The Spider-Sense isn't perfect.

Adding to my above Post, in Marvel's Spider-Man, Black Widow throws a Stun Grenade at him, and Peter's Spider Sense warns him, causing him to instinctively catch the grenade without even looking...which then goes off anyway because he doesn't realize what he's holding in time to throw it away.

We could say that Teenage Parker lacks the experience and situational awareness to always properly react to the Spider Sense (he feels it, but is too focused on what's in front of him to realize what it's trying to tell him).

Adult Peter shouldn't make those mistakes, but I'm sure he does for plot reasons.

So the Spider-Sense is a rare case of Practical But Unreliable.

I like how it reacts differently to certain individuals. Venom is completely immune to it, but others make it go into overload mode.

The symbiote is too unpredictable for the spider sense to detect,or something

It's stealth jet avoiding radar

No, it's that since the Symbiote was bonded to Peter, it essentially knows how to register as "Peter" so it goes undetected.

I even recall an issue where Peter’s spider-sense went off but he ignored it.

“My Spider-Sense says danger incoming! But that’s impossible! I’ve just grounded the Vulture!”

Whoops.

We also have to consider those times where there’s so much danger around that Peter can’t tell where a specific danger is coming from.

And sometimes it is simply not possible to avoid a danger. If the roof comes down, it comes down.

No, it's that since the Symbiote was bonded to Peter, it essentially knows how to register as "Peter" so it goes undetected.

Which is how it's always worked, but has never been a thing that always makes sense.

"There's someone flying towards me about to punch me in the face and—oh, no, wait, the person about to punch me in the face is also me. False alarm."

Well, if he could see it with his eyes, he wouldn't need the Spider-Sense for it. It kicks in for things that are bypassing his other senses already, like a motion sensor on your porch while you're on the other side of the house. Maybe it trips an alarm, but Spidey hasn't invested in those extra surveillance cameras yet. Unless he's Man-Spider at the time.

I suppose a good analogy is in how people tend to not panic or flinch when punching themselves in the face.

I pretty sure there's some flinching with self face punching.

Because you know, you're punching yourself in the face.

Wait does this mean that there was never a time when Ben or Kaine set off Peter’s spider sense?

That can’t be right

Eh. Spider-Sense is the ultimate "forget about it when it's not convenient for the writers" superpower because it's so vague and unhelpful anyway. It's basically the in-universe equivalent of "You might want to save your game here!"

Bypassing the spider-sense is something unique to the Venom symbiote because it was bonded to Peter.

IIRC, its not even something Venom's offspring posses.
