Sure, but it hampers the whole 'this is DND with realism thing." Like a race that depends entirely on raping the women of other species to survive is kind of "wait, how did this happen and how did they ever reach these levels to be a threat?"
Plus it doesn't seem goblins are particularly far-thinking at all.
Goblin slayer is far from edgy. From most part it's ligh hearted adventures. Elves get into fights with Dwafs, Lancer still has terrible luck (at least when it comes to women) and everyone tries rehabilitate blockheaded stuborn protagonist. That's what is this story about.
Goblins are evil rapey bastards and need to be killed, but pros in killing can do that relatively safely and then go get drink and huge wheel of cheese. Orcbolg too might be dark like if he were from DC universe, but when go too far he get kicked and have to listen annoying (for him) sermon that being edgy is unhealthy and not fun.
It's basicaly story that even in Crapsack World there is still plenty of good things worthy life for and there is no darkness (goblins) that can't be defeated with reliable companions on your side.

That rape scene and whole slaughter of the team and even of goblin kids was just hard to watch
I’m assuming the appeal of this show is this dude who works hard and skillfully takes out goblins methodically. Or something
I heard good things about this but having the rape be there felt like bad hentai. I do note how the rescued girls are shuffled away and assuming to never be seen again
I like the Dark Souls aesthetic of main guy’s design but that was unpleasant to watch.

That episode sure was not light hearted.

That rape was not offscreen. When a naked woman is thrown on her knees with a monster behind her, only to cut to her piercing screams and a shot of her clearly being violated without showing the assailant? That's a discretion shot at best
Because they're objects, not real characters.
The rescued girls being shuffled off there. They're basically objects meant to be raped, abused and then shunted off, since that was their only purpose.

Right, it seems they made up their mind already and are just repeating themselves now.
It was. She was stripped on screen, she was a dragged away and raped after Priestess ran away with Witch.

Is there any criticism of this you'll permit?
Like, of all the takes on this "you're judging an anime by its first episode!?" is one of the most baffling. Like "....yes?"
I think you need to learn what 'offscreen' is. She was stripped down, clearly about to be raped, then we cut to her screams and cut back to her with her eyes vacant as her body clearly jerks and rocks like someone is thrusting inside her. This is not offscreen. At all.

Because Goblin Slayer is still uneducated in ways of fun at this point. Guts also wasn't always this dandy DILF we know and love, he first needed bunch cute children and comic relief characters around him, right?
And well Orcbolg is much faster in assmebling these.

"I liked it, ergo it is above criticism" is not 'fact.'
Berserk isn't remotely the same there. I mean, as much as I think Berserk relied too much on gratuitous rape as well, Guts' rape in the early volumes is about Guts himself, and focuses enormous on his personal trauma and issues from it. Also, there was....Puck to alleviate the darkness, but...one's mileage will vary on Puck. Also, it was pretty early on Guts is having a naked water fight with Griffith to be fair. Berserk was dark, but had more moments of levity.

No, you're only rebutting criticism with "Facts, not feelings."
Criticism of art is inevitably going to go to feelings on it. You liked it? Great, not saying you're wrong to. Could do without the "you cannot criticize it after just the first episode" though.

They use the goblin’s claws tearing at her behind (potential visual cue of yeaaaaaah), cut to her face making a clenched anguished expression, and then after Priestess runs away to her vacant face being jerked around because yes, a rape is happening
Like dude, obviously by TV and obviously most media constraints, not gonna be explicit on showing nudity and an encompassing shot of the deed but what Goblin Slayer does is code the whole process visually so they can ‘show’ rape and even then it’s skirting dangerously to their cut off point on what’s acceptable to show

I find it adds further desperation to their methods.
They are aware they could an easily die out so they take every measure to make sure they have some fallbacks.
