Holy Shit this episode was absolutely amazing. By far the best "fightless" episode. Some absolutely amazing character moments on Yuri, Mikio and Yukio. Also the rap was goddamn outstanding (the wolf howls incorporated to the beat gave me chills) and it made me extremely pumped.

To me, it seems like we're heading into an ending where either both Yuri and Joe die or Joe dies and Yuri's injuries render him unable to box ever again..

My prediction for the ending is: Joe will die, but win the bout against Yuri (in a Not His Sled rug pull: the audience expects him to live because now he won, but then he dies). Yuri will retire (possibly due his injuries) and Joe's past will come to light, turning him into a martyr and possibly an icon for the unauthorized civil rights movement. I see it ending with a older Yuri looking at a statue of Joe (echoing the Arc Words: they don't make graves for stray dogs...but they do make monuments) before heading off to a boxing arena, where he is serving as a trainer to a fighter.]

In the last shot we see that fighter is "Gearless" Sachio.

Fade to black.

Whelp, looks like I was completely wrong about this being the final episode. And boy howdy, am I glad for that. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. This is the good stuff. Next week is gonna be so hype.

Oh Yuri, I like you more and more.

Wait, was that champagne at the start CG?

Anyhow, great episode. The buildup for the final fight has been wonderful, and the rap at the end closes it nicely. Now all they need to do is have a great final episode and bring home the gold.

I thought they'd bring Joe's backstory in this episode, as well as Yuri's. While we did get a few glimpses, I'm not bothered that we didn't get all of it, and, honestly, I'm fine if they keep it that way as well. The final fight should be pure brawling, not affected by someone remembering a promise of some kind. These two are good enough. All that's left is the ability of each one now.

I won't even try to make predictions for the end beyond "there'll be a fight". I would never have thrown my hat into the "Yuri will remove his Gear" ring, so by this point, I got nothing. I would say it's more likely that Yuri will die and not Joe, but that's just going by the injuries.

That soundtrack cannot come soon enough.

Well… Pretty ironic that the fight without gear is the one where the punches felt the heaviest. tongue

So this is a full happy ending, with no one dying. Huh. Now that's a curve ball. Hmmmm… Not sure what to think of this ending honestly. One part of me can't help but find it underwhelming, but that's probably because the other part of me expected some kind of tragic, world-shattering ending. But the end of the fight tells it all: this isn't about the world or the audience. It's about two guys finding who they want to be. So it's fitting in the end. I still think it lacked something, but I'm not sure what…

Oh, and the integrated gear was apparently supposed to serve as military tech. Hope of humanity my ass.

I feel... kinda cheated.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the fight itself was great, but I feel that by acting all coy as to who won until the very last second of the episode, they failed to stick the landing. The emotional discharge the audience gets from seeing the hero stand victorious (or not) is a really big part of a fight scene, especially if it's the grand finale. I now feel there is just a real big part missing, and I'm somewhat disappointed.

Like what they did with the aftermath, though. That's good stuff. Wish I could pay better attention to it the first time around because I was too busy looking for clues as to exactly how the fight ended to really enjoy it.

Also, screw Shirato. That is amazing technology that could be used for so much good, and the first they do with it is sell it to the military. It really murders whatever moral high ground Yukiko thought to have this entire show.

Well, that was a good ride. I like it.

I will say I'm a bit disappointed in the fight itself. I expected something a bit more straightforward, instead of several minutes of people talking around the fight. But oh well. I do like how they both survived, and the way the ending was structured.

What I disagree the most with, though, is that I don't think we should have known who won. The fight was never about which of them would win, it was about both being able to push themselves beyond. Which, I guess, didn't really happen in this fight, which is why it feels so underwhelming. It was just a normal fight with people talking around it. The execution feels a bit lacking, and because of that, the show doesn't stick it's landing as well as it could have. Especially with all the teasing at the end.

But, this has been a fun ride, and the ending isn't so bad as to spoil the whole thing. It's not bad at all, in fact. Just a tad underwhelming for the quality the show had been displaying until now.

So when is the dub gonna be announced?

Like surprised Funi or someone else hasn’t already snagged this show considering how it’s a surefire hit.

The marketability for one writes itself.

I demand that Joe is voiced by Michael B. Jordan and Nanbu by Sylvester Stallone. tongue Or the other way round. That could be funny too.

The ending took me by surprise. Feels like a second season is definitely possible? I was expecting Joe to lose and die, but him actually winning shocked me a bit, considering in the original Joe DID die in his last fight.

This was the Rikishi fight, so the bigger surprise is that Yuri survived.

weeks late to the parry but I finished Megalobox.

Megalobox is kind of weird in that it's a sports anime where the actual sport is kind of its weakest link. The stories leading up to the fight, the music, the setting and the aesthetic carry the day but the actual fights themselves are kinda flat in comparison. That's why I didn't mind the final match jumping around all over the place and ending so abruptly; the combat sequences didnt matter as much as what the fight meant to the characters themselves.

I'm at peace with this Joe not dying too- it would have felt kind of abrupt, since the story didnt build up to it like Ashita no Joe did. I kinda see Megalobox as the story of him, Nanbu and Sachio finding a purpose to live and a place to belong as well, so the happy end fits that narrative really well.

I liked the ending. Megalobox was not the greatest thing in the universe I thought it would be, in episode 1, but it was still refreshing and fun.

Ooooooookay, but this series ended on a perfectly fine note, a proper solid conclusion. Wonder what they can make a sequel out of. Maybe it will be boxing with that gear this time around? :P

I suppose it will have a new protagonist? Because there isn't much more they can do with Joe, especially if it happens 7 years later.

Just hope they at the least expand the soundtrack while keeping the composer and theme, because the first OST was BOSS AS FUCK.

I figure the tease of a bearded Joe and the timeskip of seven years might mean they'll make a Logan-esque storyline of an aged Joe dealing with the twilight of his life. Seven years is a very long time in boxing, particularly when you're a fighter who spent his entire life taking punches directly to the face from people with literal steel fists in fights with endless rounds.

It could also put Joe in the trainer role and shift to Sachio in the fighting role.
