Heard about the manga, never had the chance to see it (partly cause I’m based in the Philippines, where it’s sometimes hard to find good manga), but watching the anime version.

I’m hoping that it’ll showcase the Ainu language, which Tokyo is trying to preserve after annexing Hokkaido aka Ezo since it’s endangered.

Though I wonder about the upcoming English voiceover for this.

By Haruhi, the fight with the bear was just bad. I mean, why, just WHY.

My impression, from the first episode, is that this is gonna be a mediocre adaptation of what's probably a great manga.

And yeah, that friggen' bear. It looked like they... I don't know, made a vaguely ursine-shaped 3d model, used a photo of a real bear as the texture for the model, and then made a guy who'd never seen a bear before animate it.

For the second bear I kinda liked it for that since the girl went on about it becoming an evil god from eating people. Gave it a demonic vibe.

Word is that the production crew did the CG bear to show off the wild bear evil animal side...

CG aside, I find the series interesting so far. Would bring a good way to show to other viewers around the world more of Japanese sub-cultures in the past.

And I'm really digging Saichi's acting, he sounds FULL of passion for the role.

Finally got around to seeing this. Looks pretty interesting, but the CG is a bit distracting, especially for the bears and the fire, which looked completely out of place. Still, this looks like it could be well-done.

So guys, would you like to make your wishlist cast for a possible English dub of this anime? I made one.

Watched the first two episodes. It's a very simple series that's able to stretch short stories into long segments without boring you. It's still heavy on the exposition though...

For those curious about the manga-anime differences and/or the historical background of the series, I've been doing a series of posts on /r/anime detailing both: Episode 1, Episode 2 (hopefully this isn't being too self-promoting). Here's a few so-called "highlights" from them:

  • "The manga's depiction of the prologue battle is much more Sugimoto-focused than the anime's. For example, after the opening shot, the manga immediately focuses on Sugimoto affixing his bayonet, while the anime instead chooses to pan over the entrenched troops first before moving to Sugimoto. Indeed, the manga has no panels of the battle for 203 Hill outside of what Sugimoto himself can see, so there's zero aerial shots, no direct images of artillery firing, and instead of seeing the Russian machine gunners directly, you only see the damage they inflict on the poor SOBs near Sugimoto."

  • "A minor detail, but what gave me the idea to do this in the first place was the difference between the anime and manga in the shot of Asirpa's hand about to pull Sugimoto from beneath the bear. While the anime has Asirpa and Sugimoto grasping each other's hands almost like a handshake (which was almost certainly the intended visual), the manga has the two grasping each other's wrists (you know, the practical way, and a reminder of how much a stickler the mangaka can be about accuracy)."

  • "The Abashiri prison was a real prison established in 1890 to house political prisoners and other people considered to be of the utmost danger. The prison was moved to a modern facility in the 80s and is still in operation today, but it now only houses inmates serving less than a decade. As for the old prison, it's now a museum. Abashiri Prison also apparently raises high-quality beef cattle."

  • "The end of chapter 1 [of the manga] includes some detail on the "Blakiston Line", the zoological boundary between Hokkaido and Honshū named after English naturalist Thomas Blakiston. Specifically, the animals on Hokkaido are generally related to other north Asian species, while their Honshū counterparts are generally related to south Asian species. Also, Hokkaido animals tend to be bigger than their southern counterparts, as would be predicted by Bergmann's rule (the general biological principle that bigger bodies are found in colder climates than warmer ones)"

  • "...That said, the anime does cut out a brief exchange where Sugimoto compares the pinecone to a fried shrimp, confusing Asirpa, who has no idea what a 'fried shrimp' even is.... ...Obviously, the anime cut out those parts because it was able to get their points across later anyways, but I still feel a little sad they cut out a fun little culture clash moment (especially since the implied joke is that Asirpa wouldn't know what the 'Fry/Furai' part in 'Ebi Fry' meant; no English loanword craze in her neck of the woods)..."

  • "We also have our first (and hopefully last) example of cut dialogue that actually created what many anime-only viewers saw as a plot hole (heck, as someone who hadn't read that chapter in a while, I was confused for a bit); when Sugimoto and Shiraishi are yelling at each other about the "deal", Sugimoto outright says in the manga that the reason he was chasing down Shiraishi was because he wanted to keep him captive until they could find the gold, not because Asirpa hadn't finished copying down his tattoo (indeed, the manga implies that she finished her sketch while Sugimoto was having his flashback that the anime cut)."

  • "Another fun fact about Otaru relevant to the manga is that it may have originally been an Ainu settlement; indeed, it's believed that the name 'Otaru' itself comes from Ainu otarunai, which seems to mean something along the lines of 'river running through sandy beach'."

  • "A digression on the meaning of chitatap; Crunchyroll translates it as 'something we carve together', while the manga translation I'm using renders it as 'we mince it'; both are basically accurate in spirit. That said, if we want to split the word into its component meanings, it would be chi (people) + tata (chop/bash) + p (nomizalizer), which basically translates to 'thing that people bash/chop' (To make things more complicated, chi is also the form of 'we/our' that you use with transitive verbs when you're excluding the listener from your definition of 'we/our'... except, as demonstrated with Asirpa's explanation of chitatap, it can be inclusive of the listener when you're using it in the sense of 'we, the people')."

Been watching this anime.....It's pretty interesting so far. Wonder if the anime could give some differences between the manga and still try to be good on its own
