To the casual observer, Nowheretown is just an isolated, idyllic little town in rural... wait... where is it again? Iowa? Florida? California? Vermont? Anyways, it's just an idyllic little town somewhere in the United States with a really weird name. However, once you get past a really heavy Weirdness Censor, you might begin to notice things. None of its residents seem to agree on what year it is. Some say 1987, some say 1991. Hell, some say 1891, and others say 2016. And all of them seem to dress the part. The place also seems to run on Comic-Book Time, although you'll only notice if you live there or pass through more than once, and then, again only if you get past the Weirdness Censor. Also, the place seems to be pretty much everywhere and pretty much nowhere in the rural United States (except for Alaska or Hawaii) at the same time.

The truth is that Nowheretown is an Eldritch Location geographically tied to all those "the middle of nowhere" places in the rural mainland United States and temporally tied to all the years in between 1890 and 2017 (so basically, everyone is from anywhen from 1891 to 2016). Time doesn't work the same way in Nowheretown as it does in the real world, and there are some people from 2007 that moved there way before other people who were from 1932, who, in turn, moved there way before some other people who were from 1974. As stated above, time is weird. Also, there's a really strong Weirdness Censor around the area. People don't notice stuff that they should that would make them think Nowheretown is anything more than an idyllic little town in Massachusetts or Texas or wherever, or if they do, they don't pay that much attention to it. The Weirdness Censor is stronger for people who are passing through than it is to people who live in Nowheretown, but it's still crazy strong. The place runs on Comic-Book Time, so people rarely age, and if they do, it's sporadic, and rarely more than 5 years (or 10-20 for people who were born in Nowheretown or moved there as little kids). Days and weeks are normal, but months are only differentiated by what holidays happen during said months, and years only matter because of what season it is. Nobody really seems to care to write down what year it is, although they do think they know what year it is (usually the year they came there, or a few years later). Also, once you move there, you become part of the Close-Knit Community, and you aren't going to leave, except maybe on vacation to "the mountains" or "the beach", although anything more specific tends to trigger the Weirdness Censor. The result is a Quirky Town with an Anachronism Stew and plenty of Schizo Tech, although it is a very nice place to live, and is a Close-Knit Community. Some people come here with prejudices befitting their various eras, but they tend to lose them due to the fact that nobody else seems to care whether Mr. Jones is black or if Mrs. Anderson votes in the mayoral election held every two years or if the Hendersons are a gay couple. The Weirdness Censor also subconsciously aids in them losing said prejudices.

Although nobody cared or noticed, Nowheretown has been in stasis for more than a thousand years, although its first residents have barely aged at all. What happens when you pierce the Weirdness Censor? Well, sometimes you briefly see a bit through the Weirdness Censor (that's when you notice something's off, because Billy said "Totally Radical", and who unironically says that in 2014? Or because Mr. Garcia has a weird handheld computer that you've somehow never noticed before), but that is different from piercing the Weirdness Censor. When you see a bit through it, you notice something weird, but don't think about it nearly as much as you should ("Ooh, color TV. I didn't know they had those." as opposed to "Holy shit! It's 1943 and that guy has a color TV!"). when you pierce the Weirdness Censor, you notice just how weird and anachronistic everything is, and not only that, but the Weirdness Censor no longer effects you once you completely pierce it. Completely piercing it takes a lot of concentration, thinking, and mental effort, and can only happen if you're a resident of the town. Currently, only about 20 of the residents have pierced it, and each has begun investigating into "why the hell does this place exist"? The answer, and the full implications as yet have eluded them.

Also, all that "noticing" has resulted in some anachronistic stuff for everyone. The local gaming store has all of the editions of pretty much every relatively popular Tabletop RPG except Dungeons And Dragons fourth edition (the owner hates that edition), pretty much every building except for some farmhouses on the outskirts of the town has electricity, and other little things like that. It's especially anachronistic in those that have been here the longest, but even they look and act mostly like they're from the time period they're from.

And here's where you come in. You're just a few normal 11th graders from Nowheretown who happen to share the same classes. You haven't pierced the Weirdness Censor yet, but you soon will. However, the idyllic and uneventful aspect of Nowheretown which has lasted for more than a thousand years is about to fall to the wayside. This is going to be the first eventful year in the town's entire history, and your characters are going to be in the middle of it.

For Reference: Important Places and Hangouts
These aren't the only businesses and other important places in Nowheretown, but they're the ones you're most likely to visit or hang out at.
  • Nowheretown High School: The place where you're going to school.
  • Nowheretown Police Station: The home of the Nowheretown Police Department. The sheriff is currently Alex Henderson, who is from the year 1953.
  • Nowheretown Courthouse: The courthouse.
  • Nowheretown Hobby Shop: The local gaming store. Run by Timothy Henderson, Alex Henderson's husband. Tim is from 1993. He has pretty much every tabletop game, and has pretty much every edition for all of his tabletop RPGs, with the only exception being Dungeons And Dragons fourth edition. He hates it. He's also played pretty much every game that he has.
  • Nowheretown Supply Co.: Run by Emiline Anderson, an outdoorsy woman from 1987, this place has pretty much anything if you want hunting supplies, gas, candy, you name it.
  • Alder's Grocery Store: Nowheretown's seller of foodstuffs. More anachronistic than a flintlock plasma rifle, and run by Gustaf and Samantha Alder, a man from 1922 and a woman from 2012. Yes, they are a married couple.
  • Sam's Pizza: The local pizza place. Run by a guy name Sam. From 2001, Sam moved here to get as far away from New York as he possibly could so he could try to forget about 9/11. He has gotten over it since then, and makes a really good pizza. Sam is very good at making "traditional" pizzas (pepperoni, cheese, sausage, pepperoni and sausage).
  • Max's Pizza: The other local pizza place. Run by a guy named Max. Max is from 1974. He and Sam are Vitriolic Best Buds and sometimes buy each others' pizzas when they hear business is getting tough. The only guy that can make pizza that rivals Sam's. Max is very good at making... unconventional pizzas. His forte is everything from Hawaiian pizza to mushroom, olive, and sardine explosion.
  • The list could go on and on. I'll just list some more restaurants, since humans love food: Andy's Family Diner, The Nowhereville Malt Shop, Rick's (a bar), Lin's (a Chinese place), Liz's Whizzes (A really weird restaurant that's part cafe, part coffee shop, part place where Liz can express herself in a very weird and interesting way.), and a few others. This is in no way a complete list

A Handy Guide To the Time Periods
You should probably browse through these pages (clicking on the one's that you're interested in) when deciding which decade your character is from.

Character Creation Sheet

  • Name: Your character's name.
  • Gender: Any gender is probably fine. Please list pronouns.
    • Sexuality: Probably useless except for shipping.
  • Age: Default age is 16, but you could've been held back or moved up a grade.
  • Year: The year you came to Nowheretown. Any year from 1891 to 2016. Do your research. Characters who were born in Nowheretown just put "Born Here" instead.
  • How Long I've Been Here: How long your character's been in Nowheretown be vague. It revolves more around perception than reality.
    • If your character's Just Moved Here, he's only been in Nowheretown a year or two tops. He probably hasn't noticed that many weird things yet, and is probably a Naïve Newcomer.
    • If your character's Been Here Awhile, she has probably been here a few years, maybe a decade tops. She has probably noticed a few weird things, and gotten used to them.
    • If your character's Been Here Forever, he's, well, been here forever. He's probably been here at least 20 years, and has seen most of the weirdness. Regardless of how long they've been in Nowheretown, characters who were born in Nowheretown automatically belong in this category.
  • Personality: How your character behaves and reacts to stuff and stuff.
  • Appearance: How your character looks.
  • Skills: What your character is good at.

Name: Randal Egbert.

Gender: Male, He/Him Pronouns

Sexuality: Heterosexual.

Age:16

Year: 2016

How Long I've Been Here: he is a Naive Newcomer

Personality: Randy is a quiet, Lazy individual who is perfectly content to stay inside on a good day outside, and is generally indifferent to the opinions of most people writing off any of the few oddities he sees as the culture of the town. although he can very stubborn when it comes to things in his life and is very possessive of his stuff, and tends to place his needs above the needs of others.

Appearance: he is a light skinned man standing at 5'11" with black hair and brown eyes he normally wears a long sleeved T-Shirt and and Sweatpants.

Skills: due to his silence he is good at sneaking around without being notice as he doesn't make much sound to be tracked, he's also good at video games and he is a surprisingly good at recognizing any story elements happening in real life, mostly attributed to his time on T Vtropes and his reading hobby.

Hobbies: if he's not spending time inside his own house reading, playing a video game, or surfing the internet you can probably find him in the hobby shop, most likely re-reading one of the world of darkness playbooks, or looking for a tabletop RPG group to join/start or talking to Tim. if he's not there, he would be hanging around the local arcade (assuming there is one) or Library (again assuming there is one)

Stuff: his Cellphone, Keys to the house he and his family lives in, a wallet containing his money and information and pictures, a pouch of dice, because why not.

History: there isn't much to say about his life, he had a normal life like other kids/teens before him and he moved here in 2016, despite being new to the town, sometimes he gets a glimpse behind the censor when he notices people use some really outdated technology or language but he simply writes it off as the odd culture of the town.

is this good enough or should i change something?

[up] Good, except "how long I've been here" shouldn't be in specific years.

  • Name: Garth Recht
  • Gender: Male (He / Him)
  • Sexuality: Straight
  • Age: 16
  • Year: Born here(?)
  • How Long I've Been Here: Been Here Forever / Born Here.
  • Personality: Garth is a fiercely competitive young guy - he lives to prove himself, make himself distinct from his older brother, and achieve great things. He has a great deal of antagonism with his Big Brother Bully, Marcus, who is one of the chief bullies and Jerk Jock types at the school. While Garth is a track and field runner, he is more complicated than just being "the good jock" - he's still pretty macho, thinks he has to constantly prove himself a man, and even though he has a steady girlfriend, he is fond of looking at other girls. The conflict between him and his brother largely originates from a traumatic event in their past, and from thereon the two had become incredibly bitter enemies. Garth, for all his faults, does want to become a "hero" and stand up for people getting bullied by "my brother Marcus, and his friends, who think that they're royalty here or something."
  • Appearance: Garth is a somewhat tall, about six foot one dirty blond haired young man - he has a runner's build, well toned and muscular from practice for running a variety of events. He has a small scar below his eye from the incident, and he most often has a confident smile on his face. He wears by and large tank tops with a variety of heroic logos and such, either jeans or shorts pending on the season, and running shoes.
  • Skills:
    • Runner: Garth is a very capable, fast runner - he's called the school's best runner in a variety of events due to an odd preponderance of energy in him.
    • Improvised Brawling: Due to getting into it with his brother and his bully squad, Garth has a rather nice set of street fighting skills and is good at improvising during a fight, using the environment and buildings around him to help him fight.
    • Beneficiary of The Event: When Garth and Marcus were young, they were apparently attacked by lightning - which resulted in a number of things happening. Neither of them know what this means for them just yet, but once they key in on the weirdness of the town, this has an unforeseen beneficial effect for both.
  • Hobbies: Comic books - Garth is a big fan of the Justice League, various other teams including the Legion of Superheroes, and solo books. They are the inspiration for his aspirations of hero-hood.
    • Garth is interested in the weirdness surrounding the town, believing something may be going on - and of course, he believes his brother is somehow involved.
  • Stuff: Garth has a baton on his person that he was given by an old coach of his before his "retirement". He has a skateboard, and his own set of house keys.
  • History: When Garth and his older brother Marcus were young, lightning behaved very oddly when the two and their younger sister Mira were out playing - it seemed to seek them, attacking and viciously destroying anything between it and them. Both Marcus and Garth were blasted by the lightning, and came out altered somehow...and their sister was left totally comatose. Garth blamed Marcus for this, while Marcus blamed Garth - from then on, the formerly close brothers became bitter foes. Garth became bent on finding out more about the weirdness of the town, because he believes Marcus doesn't care.

  • Name: Marcus Recht
  • Gender: Male (He / Him)
  • Sexuality: Straight
  • Age: 17
  • Year: Born there
  • How Long I've Been Here: Born there / Been there Forever
  • Personality: Marcus is the pushy, bullying and rough counterpart to his younger brother - Marcus has a severe temper, prone to exploding at the slightest provocation, and with a marked tendency toward acting very crazy when in this state. Marcus is well known as a loner despite the fact he has a whole bully squad at his beck and call - he largely prefers his own company, with the exception of his girlfriend Sasha. Marcus is quite aware of his temper, and tendencies toward mental problems, and tries to rein them in, though he's not entirely successful in that. He does however manage to not be a brute toward Sasha. Indeed, when he leaves his solitary bubble, he does manage to be surprisingly good toward members of his clique. Marcus' dislike towards his brother similarly stems from the incident - and how he thinks Garth shoved all responsibility for the incident on Marcus to save himself.
  • Appearance: Marcus has more of a strawberry blond look to him, though there's a section of his hair that went white from the "shock" of what happened. He has a more muscular, larger look to him than his trim and thin brother, standing about two inches taller. Marcus is a very broody figure - a further contrast to his brother. Marcus wears a denim jacket, a short sleeved black shirt, black jeans, and boots. He is technically more conventionally handsome than his thin younger brother, but due to the bullying and temper he's not often noticed for that.
  • Skills: Brawling: Marcus is a wrestler among other impact sports - he has a more well honed but still quite improvised sense of fighting.
    • Leader: Marcus despite his solitude does manage to be a capable leader of his little bully clique. He enforces discipline and keeps members from going too far.
    • Beneficiary of the Incident: Marcus like Garth has some unknown at this time positive effects from the incident years ago, wherein they were attacked by lightning.
  • Hobbies: Driving around town, hanging out with his group, making life difficult for little brother, enjoying TV...
  • Stuff: Car Keys (Marcus has a car he uses to transport his team around in), knuckle duster (he doesn't use it much, just mostly as an intimidation tool), The Odd Key Card (doesn't even remember where he found this, just that he has it)
  • History: Marcus is the older brother of Garth, and the two of them used to be as close as brothers could be...until the Lightning Incident happened, sending their little sister to the hospital and souring relations between the brothers. Marcus maintains that Garth shifted all responsibility on to him when he claims it was Garth's curiosity and insistence that led them to danger. He has since become one of the biggest bullies at the school, outright leading a whole clique of similarly minded people. Marcus is regarded highly by them, outright being called the leader or "the first". Marcus despite what Garth thinks is interested in the weirdness, but from a different angle.

I'm going to play both - Marcus and Garth's stories are heavily impacted by the equal and in some cases opposite reaction they make to one another's movements.

Very tempting - very tempting indeed.

If I join, maybe a 1940s character - a recent-ish arrival, though.
