I don't. She's a horrible bigot and she's reaping the consequences for her bigotry. No one did this to her. She did this to herself.
I'd almost feel bad for the costars and writers of the show...but they knew who she was. They should not have been surprised by this.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWhat's interesting is the vehemence of the reaction, particularly combined with how well the show was doing in ratings. There has to be more going on than just Barr acting like an asshole in public
Apparently it was the last straw. She had apparently been acting like a horrible bigot for a while during the show's production.
Disgusted, but not surprisedMust be a Deep State conspiracy.
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! You joke, but there are alt-righters and conservatives whining about how this was the "libs'" fault. They're also making noise about how they want Bill Maher canceled in retaliation. As if Maher wasn't someone a lot of liberals actually don't like due to his bigotry, pseudoscience anti-vaxxer bullshit, Islamophobia, etc.
Disgusted, but not surprisedx4
Honestly, I'd assume that her bigotry was a problem long before this and this was the one that just blew up. Considering how quick ABC canned it, I think it would be safe to guess that they'd talked to her about it before and were ready to pull the plug at a moment's notice.
Ok. I want to ask a question but I'm a bit afraid to because I associate John Goodman with a lot of my childhood. But.... he's not biggoted like she is, right?
I've been having a problem lately thinking about celebrities that were big parts of my delevlopment and realizing that a lot of them would... probably not be kind to me.
Can't say I've ever seen anything about him being especially hateful.
Edited for cynicism. ;p
It probly would have come up with the coverage of Barr's whole thing.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! What a shame.
In retrospect, they should have made the show DARLENE and been about her moving in with her father after Roseanne passed away.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. That would have made more sense given that Barr's been a bigot this whole time.
I get the impression Sarah Gilbert was the heart behind the series and trying to do someone she once viewed akin to a mom a solid.
Sadly, Barr wasted it.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Well, one has to give it to ABC, they are currently not exactly rolling in high-rated shows. Another network might have tried to weather the scandal and keep the show on.
I admit, as bad as I feel about the cast, I am kind of glad. Considering how awful the first episode was, having her on ABC never really sit right with me. This is a Disney owned network after all.
That's probably why they didn't mind canning it. The loss is a drop in the bucket for Disney. Hardly worth the bad PR.
Small point, she wasn't just "an asshole in public".
She was grossly racist and antisemitic
In fact, her comment about Soros alone should be grounds for him to litigate her to the ground (and rightly so)
Let's not relativize this by calling it "asshole".
"You can reply to this Message!"x3
I would feel bad for the cast, but I also get the impression that there is an air of relief. A lot of them were ready to jump ship and some did (like Wanda) before ABC just axed it entirely. If it was merely her twitter tirades, I feel the cast would have talked to people internally. Either that had already happened or it was so bad they were saying 'fuck this' regardless. Either way, it suggests an unhealthy work environment and most would probably be better off.
I second this. Calling her an asshole for what she did is an insult to assholes. Call her a bigot.
Disgusted, but not surprisedShe's also back on Twitter, just reblogging 'support' tweets for now, a lot of which are "It's s political whack job", "Bad Obama/Liberals" and "Georg Soros is a Nazi"
Among professional s this is, I believe, called doubling down.
"You can reply to this Message!"It's not like she has anything left to lose at this point. Might as well further ingratiate herself with her fellow bigots.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe only thing about John Goodman that I don't care for much was he once complained about Kristen Wiig "snubbing" him at some event.
What actually happened was Kristen was having a conversation with a family member or childhood friend (I forget which) and asked John to wait a moment while she finished, and John got butthurt over that.
Other than that, I've heard fairly nice things about him.
If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.Thank god. I always get worried about that kind of stuff. Childhood heroes I'd love to meet turning out to be, at best, assholes or, at worst, bigots who would hate who you are if they ever met you. Its something I've been trying to grapple with a bit.
Something that I don't see mentioned here is that it wasn't just the reboot getting canceled; they also pulled the original series from reruns. Really feels like Barr personally angered the higher-ups
...I wasn't aware that "asshole" was that weak of an insult, I guess
The key is to try and not be too emotionally invested in things you have no direct control over.
Disgusted, but not surprisedIt would suck if I couldn't watch the show on Amazon.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.x3
Yeah. Oh boy. With how bad the blow out is at this point, I feel like this is less an overblown incident and more likely she's been talked to before about this behind the scenes and everyone just got fed up with her.
True, but it still happens. I have favorite authors and actors whos names just draw me in because I know they do good work. Getting slapped in the face with 'BTW, They're transphobic as hell' or 'They think all gay people should die' just... kills me inside a bit. I try to separate works from their creators as much as I can, but it does taint things even at the best of times. And then we get to the 'if you like a word, are you supporting the creator by proxy?' and I haven't found a convincing consensus on that. I want to believe "Hey, if you like a thing, you like it." but also I do think there are some people who fundementally do not deserve support or credit. I suppose just a bit of character development for myself in the future but, bleh. For now its an awkward feeling.
If whatever you do contributes even a fraction of a cent to said creator's pocket or in any way gives that creator more credibility (such as increasing the ratings or something)...yeah, you're supporting them. Maybe not a lot, but still.
The sad reality is that creativity isn't something only non-shitty people have.

Disgusted, but not surprised
Laurie Metcalf was in Lady Bird and apparently gets regular work, much like John Goodman. Sara Gilbert is on The Talk so she gets a regular check, Sarah Chalke is fine but I think the rest do depend on the royalties a good bit and especially the writers.
