One of the weirdest censors I learned about once (from Satoko and Nada) was that the Arabic dub of Pokémon wasn’t allowed to mention evolution (even though what Pokémon go through is really more like metamorphosis or really fast growing up.) So every scene of a Pokémon evolving was dubbed over as the mon “summoning a friend” who inexplicably leaps out of the blue while the original mon is never mentioned again.

That must have traumatized Arabic children. Especially considering the easiest thing would have just been using the Arabic word for metamorphosis instead.

I'm now trying to imagine how they handled Pikachu actively avoiding Thunder Stones. There's no way they could pull that off without making the already created Fridge Horror even worse.

Dana Terrace mentioned how she had a few ideas for holiday episodes. Ideas about Boiling Isles versions of Winter Solstice, New Year's, and definitely Halloween, were among them. With Christmas, she was more hesitant to tackle the holiday.

Hello, just started editing the trope pages for Owl House and I find some of the YMMV entries to be... questionable. Strawman Has a Point and Unintentionally Sympathetic respectively feature:

In the first episode, the principal and Luz's mother make the point that Luz needs to be more normal and appreciate the difference between fantasy and reality, an idea Luz and the episode reject by declaring it's okay for people to be weird. However, Luz's brand of weirdness isn't harmless with her 'book report' resulting in several people being bitten by snakes and the subsequent episode has Luz put herself in danger because she's too invested in her The Chosen One fantasy to notice several warning signs.

Luz's principal back in her world. We're meant to see him as strict for having Luz in the office about her book report. Said book report also involved Luz using live snakes and fireworks, the former of which attack him. In fact, it's remarkable that he's willing to hear Luz out and talk solutions with her mother. Another principal would've expelled her off the bat for endangering her teachers and classmates; so far, we don't know if Luz was expelled or if her mother managed to talk him down. For all we know, Luz may have been expelled before by a less forgiving principal and had to change schools. Hell, one could even argue that with the fireworks, the principal might have argued for police involvement for bringing explosives into the building.

Now I might be the only one, but I really don't think either Camilia or the Principal are meant to be unsympathetic or act as a strawman. Camilia is consistently portrayed as a good parent who maybe could have done better in some unspecified way and the Principal is on the same page as her. The examples here basically go "Everything we are told and shown supports this character's point, but they are a strawman because the protagonist says something that contradicts their point in a vaguely related situation". Which it doesn't, because Luz's mother is pretty explicit that she just wants her daughter to tone down the dangerous hijinks and not just stop being weird in general. And that's not even going into how S 2 E 10 makes a point out of how a demonic doppleganger made friends on the summer camp Luz was being sent to and that Luz is apparently afraid of basic social interactions with other teenagers which kinda paints her brand of weirdness in a bad light.

Do I have a thumbs up to nuke these examples or...?

I wouldn't nuke them completely but they do require a drastic rewrite since its clear they were written long before the new episode aired

[up][up]You may find help that is more able to be objective in the Unintentionally Unsympathetic Cleanup Thread, but considering how it was later revealed that the normalcy camp really wasn't as horrible as the fans made it out to be, I think it's fair to say they weren't meant to be seen as bad as fans made them out to be.

The principal situation is weird because this most recent visit is over something legitimately dangerous but it’s implied Luz was previously sent to the office just for turning out her eyelids.

Turning out your outlids is legit weird but she probably did too many times to get sent to the principle's office

Just binged the entire series so far in the last 2 days. Needless to say, I got into it.

This is a minor thing, but I do hope Belos gets one of the animation bump fights at some point.

Also, in-universe, IS Hooty supposed to look creepy? I think he's absolutely adorable, and the best in general, but is that just an animation style thing and he's really meant to look super unsettling? Or is he just annoying?

It could be something similar to Amphibia, where normally we see Plantars like this:

But then in Temple Frogs, it's implied that they really look like this:

An ambulatory piece of wood with an owl face that could extend an arbitrarily long distance while also being covered in feathers would be pretty creepy if it was photorealistic.

[up][up][up] Well, pretty much everything from the Demon Realm is designed as creepy to some degree. It's a Burtonesque style where even the characters we are not meant to fear can come off as unsettling.

And I agree that it would be great to see Belos to get some of that animation budget. He conveys immense power fairly well through his design and setup, but at this point it wouldn't hurt to see him do something tangibly impressive.

Even Eda would probably look a lot creepier than she does if she was realistic, with her body literally falling apart with bones sliding out of their proper places and with hair the size of her torso that she keeps as ratty as a wasp nest and full of random junk.

He's like a reverse cat burglar, I think the Boiling Isles would understand that concept.

Plot Twist: Santa in the Boiling Isles is an actual cat burglar, stealing things from naughty kids of the Demon Realm so that he can give them to good children in the human realm later.

And because Luz is Luz, he intends to rob the Owl House clean.

I figure that the Boiling Isles version of Santa would be some kind of horrible demonic entity. It teleports into people's houses vomiting up presents for the nice and just regular vomit for the naughty.
