Base Breaking Character Cleanup

Go To

The Broken Base cleanup thread discusses about examples in Broken Base, but this talks about examples in YMMV pages of works containing Base-Breaking Character, (despite being an Example Sectionectomy, this can still be seen in the YMMV pages of works) where the details on what is suitable is also vague.

Here is the criteria for Base-Breaking Character:

  • A long-term, sustained conflict: Characters that were simply hated and loved, then had their interest evaporated away (both positive and negative) after a few months doesn't count. Characters in upcoming works also don't count.
  • A vicious conflict: Factions that have little problem co-existing and doesn't mind about what the other faction likes or dislikes about the character doesn't count. If it's not particularly vicious and heated, then it would be cut or be listed as a Downplayed Trope.
  • Two (or more) vocal, almost equally sized factions: A tiny Vocal Minority that doesn't shut up their pet peeve, whilst being outnumbered by more reasonable fans don't count. Nor does a Silent Majority who doesn't make a big deal with the other side count. If one of the hating factions is significantly bigger than the other, it would be classified as The Scrappy or an Ensemble Dark Horse.
  • Little to no Middle ground: Scenarios where most of the fandom doesn't care about the character, don't count.

Base-Breaking Character is when half of the fandom likes a character, yet another equally sized half dislikes it. Now that happens, but the problem is, some entries aren't really contentious (thus not resulting in flame wars when someone says they "liked that character"). Also, several entries are one-sided towards the negative or the positive side describing that only side in detail, but then wrapping up with a single line saying "But the other half likes that character". A correct way would be describing it like "a split in the Fandom on who likes it or not", with details on both sides why they're liked and disliked.

Here's an example from YMMV.Undertale:

* Base-Breaking Character:
  • Alphys. A lot of players find her character gimmick of constant messages and attempts to help more annoying than funny, especially on repeat playthroughs. And even though she has sympathetic reasons, the reveal that she's been experimenting on sick monsters to create the Amalgamates and manipulating the player to feel better about herself doesn't help, especially since she never directly apologizes for the latter.

While it may have annoyed players due to these reasons above, there has been a considerable amount of fanarts and comics or her, and not only that, the like-dislike situation hasn't been so contentious (compared to Sans, whom he's popular, now he sucks.)

This was on Extreme Ghostbusters: The new team consisting of Eduardo Rivera, Kylie Griffin, Roland Jackson, and Garrett Miller. They have their share of popularity, but there are also some die-hard fans of the movies and The Real Ghostbusters who see the new team as inferior replacements to the original team who only exist as a hasty effort of being more culturally diverse and hip. Quite tellingly, some fans' proposals for a hypothetical second season of Extreme Ghostbusters involve the new team being unceremoniously killed off and the original team of Egon Spengler, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore being restored to the spotlight.

[up]While that focuses almost entirely on the haters, the examples gives me the impression that the haters are in the minority. And a plot proposal isn't more than a single writer's opinion, so that doesn't tell anything about the general opinion.

There definitely was a split between Real Ghostbusters fans who liked Extreme GB and who felt it ruined the RGB, resulting in part of the RGB fandom happily incorporating EGB into their canon and part of the RGB fandom pretending EGB never happened.

It's not really acrimonious these days and hasn't been for a long time. RGB fans who hate EGB just ignore EGB and lump those RGB fans who like it in with the EGB fandom. There's no real bad blood between the fandoms now, they tend to just ignore each other. That could be an age-related thing, however. It has been a very long time, so it's reached an 'agree to disagree' state of existence.

Note, the split was in the RGB fandom, not the EGB fandom.

DuckTales (2017) is getting bad as it lists almost every characters. I also keep removing Della Duck because it's based on recent revelations.

  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Mark Beaks. He's either a funny look at modern business tycoons who's a surprisingly clever, worthwhile new villain, or an unfunny attempt to keep the franchise relevant and lacking as a new member of the Rogues Gallery due to his rather harmless nature compared to the other members.
    • Webby is starting to become divisive. While the consensus among the fanbase was that the new version of the character is a vast improvement and she has many who like her, some people think that the show goes too far in making her proactive and made her too good for everything, stealing a lot of spotlight from the triplets. It doesn't help that the unfortunate reshuffling of the episodes so far has given her a lot of screen time, whereas things would have been more balanced if they had aired in the intended order. The fact that the Magica arc that's been one of the main plotlines for the first season has Webby as the primary focus character in each episode related to it thus far while the rest of the cast have all only had minor roles overall in it, including Scroogenote , also hasn't helped the case for people who view her as the latter.
    • Dewey has reached this status for similar reasons as Webby: some people love him due to his new adventurous personality, his following in Scrooge's footsteps, and last but not least his sympathetic moments, while others have grown to dislike him feeling he takes too much focus from the other characters, being the only one of the brothers tied up in the Della plotlinenote  and being the only character to appear in every episode, as well as often being at the forefront of many episodes and often more competent than some characters in spite of his Leeroy Jenkins attitude, and often at Scrooge and Donald's expense.
    • Launchpad's increasingly eccentric behavior is also this. You either find him annoying and a poor man's Soos note  who's more of an incompetent scaredy cat than the original version, or you think he's hilarious and still has plenty of moments to shine.
    • Huey. Fans either love him for being an outstanding Junior Woodchuck, others think the Junior Woodchuck aspect of his personality has become too gimmicky and dominant, at the expense of Character Development, his supposedly nicer personality, and even at times his intelligence itself.
    • Some fans consider Manny the Headless Man-Horse to be an Ensemble Dark Horse, while others consider him to be a Running Gag that has overstayed its welcome.
    • Roxanne Featherly is also this, mainly in how later episodes make her more egocentric and concerned only with getting interesting news over the truth, in stark contrast to her neutral portrayal as a honest reporter in the pilot. She's still tolerated by some people though.
    • Doofus Drake definitely qualifies, being a sociopathic, entitled brat as opposed to the dorky, good natured kid he is in the original. You love him or hate him.
    • Louie is also divisive, mainly from those who find his more jerkish, skewed behavior annoying and unlikable, and how he's the least developed of the triplets, or those who find him funny and appreciate his nicer moments and smaller instances of character development.

[up]A lot of those sound very weak. "Starting to become divisive", "some fans", "still tolerated", and things like that. On the whole it sounds like the trope is about characters where there are different opinions. But the trope is about dividing the fanbase in two camps at war with each other. If all examples were true, we'd have at least 18 factions constantly at war with one other faction, and there'd be no calm space in the fandom. If that's not an accurate reflection of the fandom as a whole, then the examples aren't correct.

[up][up] I find the sheer number of Base Breaking Characters is a sign that people are using it to list their personal gripes with the characters. Though I don't know enough about the show to comment on all the entries.

  • Webby: The entry mentions at the beginning that she's well-liked, only for the next few sentences to go on a one-sided rant about how she gets too much focus. Cut.
  • Manny the Headless Man-Horse: This seems like a minor dispute. Cut.
  • Roxanne Featherly: This example is the classic "complain, but some people don't mind" example that tropers use to get around the "acknowledge both sides" requirement for Base-Breaking Character and Broken Base. Cut.
  • Doofus Drake: This entry does not explain the positive side of the reception. Cut.

None of them look like examples as written, so it's hard to know if any of them would be keepers if they had a better write-up. I also don't know the fandom well enough to know if any are genuine, but just suffering from a bad write-up.

I wouldn't keep any as currently written.

From Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade:

  • Karel. One portion of the fanbase thinks he's cool and love him for his good Character Development, while the other portion hate him or dislikes his behavior and prefer Harken over him, instead. His role and characterization in this game also have become a major subject of controversy, with the possibly of preventing fans from seeing Karel as who he really is. While divisive in this game, many do enjoy his reappearance in The Binding Blade for becoming a much more mature and level-headed mentor figure, so he still has his fans for once he abandons his old ways, and some fans of older Karel simply think the Blazing writers went overboard in depicting the "violent younger days" that he mentions in Binding.

Some background on Karel:

  • Karel appears first in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade where he's a middle aged sword wielder who reveals that he used to a blood thirsty warrior who sought out strong opponents to face and kill. He repeated stresses that he regrets his past actions after maturing as a person and settled down to protect a small village away from civilization.
  • Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade which was released later, is a prequel to the game above and we see Karel in his younger days. Here, it is revealed that he killed his entire family over a sword technique except for his younger sister Karla who he spared because he didn't see her as a threat. The only reason he joins the side of the good guys is that he senses potential in them and doesn't want them to die just yet. Over the course of the game and several conversations with other characters, he first reveals more of his exploits, none of which paint a sympathetic view of the character but he begins the process of maturing after discussions with others.
  • The other character mentioned in the above Base-Breaking Character description is Harken. Harken is mostly unrelated character to Karel but for gameplay reasons, you can only get either Harken or Karel.

Now from my own personal experience, there isn't really any significant hatred or adoration of Karel. At best, I've encountered slight mocking from some fans because of how 'edgy' Karel is in the prequel game but even they acknowledge that this is whole point and that he eventually matures. There simply isn't any long term and perpuating hatred of the character to qualify him as a Base-Breaking Character.

So why was a he added there at all? Well, this will again need some background. There is one single fan who has a huge love of Karel. But this fan has a warped view on Karel and views him as a complete hero. Any disagreement is met with harsh rants and eventually results in harassment. Karel was first added to the YMMV page under the Alternate Character Interpretation section but someone else moved it the Base-Breaking Character section without too much issue. This fan has gone on a crusade to remove any negative implication of Karel. Apparently, they were banned because I've spoken to other editors on reddit and they confirmed that this fan (who has been posting defences of Karel on reddit that eventually resulted in some nasty comments by them) has repeatedly attempted to get them to edit on their behalf unsuccessfully. I can link to their sides of the story if necessary but I believe that this is not that relevant because Karel simply doesn't fit the description of Base-Breaking Character.

In my view, this one editor had a Draco in Leather Pants view of Karel. But for the rest of the fandom, Karel is simply not a source of much discussion. Some like him, others are not fans but that's the most that comes out of this. There have never been vicious conflicts about him, there aren't fans and haters in such numbers that would result in any conflict in the fandom. There simply isn't any significant hatred of him.

I had removed it once but it was added back by someone else. I'm not accusing them of editing on behalf of someone else, let me make that clear. This other person simply disagreed. I removed it again but opened a discussion thread and posted about it here as well after advice on the Fire Emblem forum thread.

From YMMV.WarioWare:

  • Base-Breaking Character: Ashley. Is she a mysterious and interesting character that stands out from the rest, or is she an overused and cliche character that doesn't fit in with the weird and quirky cast?

There's also a Broken Base entry about Ashley being overused and she's also listed as an Ensemble Dark Horse which even mentions that she's base-breaking. From my understanding, Ashley is one of the most popular WarioWare characters and a commonly requested character for Super Smash Bros., so I think it might just be a Vocal Minority that dislikes Ashley.

[up] I'm not exactly a big Warioware fan, but I don't remember seeing many people complain about Ashley. You're right that she is a very popular character, so it seems that her fans vastly outnumber her haters.

Also, her Broken Base entry says that she is "starting to become this", indicating that it was added shortly after the conflict started (if it even existed). And I don't think she qualifies as an Ensemble Dark Horse due to being one of the main characters (same goes for 9-Volt, 18-Volt, and Mona).

I don't read/watch and only have surface level knowledge of Shokugeki No Soma, but it's Base-Breaking Character section looks suspicious to me.

     Shokugeki No Soma
  • Base-Breaking Character
    • Although he's whom the series is named after, Soma is either a well-written, confident character having a level of Determinator atypical of the standard Shounen protagonist or a Gary Stu who keeps winning with a few losses to his name, and is constantly put over an ensemble cast of characters who garner little characterization or development of their own since the story began. That he has achieved the first seat in the Council of Ten Masters, despite not directly defeating Eishi one-on-one when it was primarily due to Erina, adds ammunition to the Gary Stu accusations.
    • Either Erina is an excellent rival and heroine to the series or she doesn't deserve the spotlight because of her Jerkass qualities and rarely appears in the plot despite receiving top billing in promotional materials. However, she's more universally popular with Japanese readers and placed runner-up in the first character poll and top spot in the second.
      • Despite the subtle Character Development, while some readers appreciate how her flaws and personal history were being revealed, others pointed out Erina had been reduced to a Neutral Female during the "Tootsuki Reformation Arc". This phase thankfully ended after the latter concluded.
    • Megumi has quite a few vocal detractors on Japanese anime/manga forums: despite being in the primary cast, they felt like she hasn't grown into a proper chef and her on-screen losses and lack of focus contrasted with her constantly being thought of as a cook with great potential. On the other hand, she is noted to be the least strongest on the heroes' side and has been taking great strides to remedy that, with the early series plots endearing her to a lot of fans.
    • Subaru quickly became despised after his "perfect" win over fan-favorite Takumi. It doesn't help he's established to be a great cooking competitor, yet comes out from nowhere to take the eighth spot in the Fall Classic finals. Additionally, he doesn't follow usual culinary methods others find to be biased and unfairnote , nor does Subaru have a food-based Signature Style like the rest of the students. However, othtuers state this simply propels Subaru into Magnificent Bastardry: he thrives on th e fact a Shokugeki is simply, at its core, "which dish tastes better" and runs with it. Beating Takumi wasn't entirely an Ass Pull when the judges stated Subaru goes above and beyond with the recipe to surpass and outstrip Takumi's own. Effectively, the win was Subaru's Establishing Character Moment, setting him up as a top contender and rival to the rest of the first-years.
    • Akira used to have a large fanbase earning him the ninth spot in the first popularity poll, even though he had only appeared for a few panels at that point in the manga. While many still like him for his looks and cool, helpful attitude, a fair share of detractors thought his overconfidence in his sense of smell was obnoxious, or find the way his specialty in aromas and spices seem to give him almost effortless victories boring. Having him win the Fall Classic to wrap up the infuriatingly long arc was too much for many readers, causing them to drop the series altogether. In fact, when he made his reappearance as a member of Central, the manga's ratings began decreasing, hitting dangerous lows during his painfully drawn-out rematch with Soma only to snap back up to the top quarter again once Akira was defeated and shunted back Out of Focus.
    • Terunori Kuga, the eighth seat on the Council of Ten Masters, became this due to haughty personality, short temper and sadist fixation for Sichuan cuisine. Some readers hate him because of this, while others think he is a good rival for Soma.
    • Council of Ten Masters second seat Rindou because of her reasons for voting for Azami as the new director to replace Senzaemon Nakiri, which has moved her from Cool Big Sis to Bitch in Sheep's Clothing. The other members of the Council who also voted for Azami have this too, except Etsuya Eizan (see Love to Hate).
    • Azami, especially when he's pretty much the reason Erina is the way she is. Some fans find this as a cheap, cliched Freudian Excuse to give a previously unpleasant character sympathy by showing her as an abuse victim, but others state this was a natural outcome and the series was going to deal with/justify Erina's attitude eventually. On the other hand, Azami's motivations stemming from his idol Jouichirou Saiba dropping out of school, which kicked off his Start of Darkness to end the cutthroat practices of Tootsuki, lessened some of this trope for the character.
    • Urara Kawashima is this In-Universe and for the fandom: similar to how male students consider her adorable, yet girls hate her Attention Whore status, parts of the fandom like her for being a cute Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, while others find her fake, annoying and useless. This intensified during the Hokkaido Promotion Exam Arc, where she's Brainwashed into siding with Central and is openly hostile towards the Rebels instead of being a neutral host. It's no surprise a lot of fans have expressed her naughtiness has crossed the line, making her awful to watch.
    • The World Gourmet Organization judges in the "RĂ©giment de Cuisine", considering they are just as much a part of the arc as the chefs due to it running for so long: in particular, Anne has fans due to her appearance and reactions, yet detractors claim because her vote for Megumi is based on her "potential", when she previously considered Momo Akanegakubo's dish the superior choice, thus decrying the act as a "pity vote", made some lose respect for her as an unbiased examiner. Meanwhile, Anne's fellow judges Historie and Charme are similarly liked for their reactions to the competitors' dishes or not thought of otherwise.

[up]

From my experience:

  • Soma is the main character, so obviously he doesn't have many detractors among the show's fans (if you hate him, you're probably not part of the fanbase). The part about him taking the first seat happened in May, so it's too recent to qualify, plus I haven't seen it discussed during my time in the fandom.
  • I've seen nearly nothing but praise for Erina. She's one of the show's most popular characters, and pretty much everyone wants to see her get with Soma.
  • Megumi's entry states that her detractors are only on the Japanese forums.
  • Subaru's entry starts off by listing his detractor's arguments, then goes on to debunk them, indicating that his haters don't actually have a point.
  • Akira's entry is overwhelmingly negative, simply saying that "many still like him for his looks and cool, helpful attitude" before going on a lengthy rant.
  • Kuga's entry is just a list of traits, then saying some like him and some hate him. Personally, I haven't seen people talk about him too much.
  • Rindou's entry is one-sided complaining about a character who isn't meant to be sympathetic.
  • Azami's entry states that the conflict has been lessened after a while. I haven't been around in the fandom long enough to know whether he really was that controversial before that.
  • Urara is more one-sided complaining.
  • The WGO judges are minor characters. Now that the arc is over, no one ever talks about them.

[up]Can you clarify which ones are "This character is absolutely not a Base Breaking Character," and which ones are "This character might qualify as a Base Breaking Character, but their entry is poorly written."

And this is just coming from a guy who occasionally stumbles into SnS discussion, but I've seen a moderate amount of Erina hate from people who like the series. I'm surprised about you seeing nearly nothing but praise for her.

[up]I'm not that active in the community (the only SnS fan forum I really browse in is on Reddit) so these are mostly my personal observations. Perhaps Erina does get a fair amount of hate in other fan communities, and maybe the other characters are debated more intensely. With that in mind, the only ones that I'm confident aren't actually examples are the WGO judges due to being too minor.

Since Real Life people don't count for MB or this should we remove this entire Big Brother page?

  • Eddie McGee is technically the first person in the American run to be one of these, from its first season, because he was introduced to us first, and has the tragic aspect of having lost his leg to sarcoma and a single mother, yet behaves with rude and insulting antics toward Jordan and smacks his naked butt on camera mocking her profession.
  • William "Mega" Collins is loved for his joyously energetic personality that makes an otherwise boring season fun and what many consider a real pity when he goes out of the house first and the house loses a lot of flavor as a result, but his culturally insensitive comments and over-the-top behavior lead to some of the US version's earliest and nastiest arguments in its pilot season.
  • Mike "Boogie" Malin is the American version's original base-breaker. He is one of the most hilarious and competitive contestants, especially when paired alongside Will Kirby, yet an absolutely insufferable little assrag who takes Unsportsmanlike Gloating to new heights. Outside the house, he's a nice guy, however, and said to be quite friendly.
  • During Season 8 of the U.S version, both Jen and Evel Dick were simultaneously loved and hated by the fanbase.
  • Brendon and Rachel are either loved, or seen as Creator's Pets. Let's go into detail about them, shall we? In US Season 12, but less so in US Season 13, Rachel was an Entitled Bastard Drama Queen expecting everyone to kowtow to her, not unlike other people in the house since then, calling people who didn't side with her "floaters", and being a general Wangster. Brendon wasn't AS bad at first, but he showed an ugly side to him when he agreed with everything his future wife said, even when it was Insane Troll Logic, occasionally abused Rachel (especially on The Amazing Race), and was frightening to some people at how he would White Knight and gloss over Rachel's negative traits, rather than admit she was in the wrong. Though Rachel did gain some Woobie points in AR 24 where it looked like they were going to be eliminated and Won back the crowd by helping another team that they were racing for last, she then lost it all when she said she wanted a Brenchel baby by winning the race to some, others appreciated that she at least tried to help another team. And sure enough within the following year, she got her wish.
  • Nikki from the UK series is either really really annoying, or actually pretty funny.
  • And from Season 13, the double eviction in which two powerful players (Daniele and Jeff) were evicted, Jeff by players he had targeted and accused of being "Floaters" who did nothing to stay in the game claiming that this is the worst season ever. Others were praising the three on their insight to take out the number one target over a jury goat (Rachel) and that Jeff was gone.
    • Season 13 in general was either one of the best seasons ever for being consistently dramatic and entertaining. Or you were disappointed and angered at how the veterans seemed to get every single twist directly or indirectly benefiting from it and shaking your head at the Flanderization of the game into a game about competitions.
  • Season 14. Dan was either one of the smartest players to ever play the game and was robbed by a bitter jury. Or, Dan played too aggressively and burned too many bridges on his way to the end, while simultaneously never succeeding at getting a large threat out of the house (Ian).
    • Season 14 itself, amazing due to how exciting Dan and Ian played the game, or boring due to how the Quack Pack streamrolled the competition, the newbie cast being strategically worse than Season 13, and the riggage towards Frank & Boogie. Danielle and Willie are also two reasons why fans can't find common ground to praise/condemn this season.
  • How about Amanda from Season 15? Just mentioning her name anywhere is bound to start up discussion on whether or not her racist comments were justified.
    • Similarly, Elissa. General consensus is that she's genuinely likable and wasn't surprised when she won America's Favorite Player, but some dislike her for the fact she's an obvious stunt cast, and some feel that casting her because she's Rachel's sister was an insult. Others hate her more for the fact that she was pretty much guaranteed MVP every week until America took over due to Rachel's fans.
    • Similarly, McCrae. He starts off as a nice guy who everyone likes and then he teams up with Amanda... Let's just say despite not having said any of the racist, homophobic, or misogynistic comments, he's considered by many as guilty by association for hanging around with Aaryn and especially Amanda. Other fans still love him and think he's the most likable of the late-game players.
    • Andy Herron is among one of the most divisive contestants for being the very epitome of a backstabber who lurks in the background and doesn't really put up or shut up, and using his homosexuality as a platform/excuse to bash women. Yet he still managed to blow out the entire household, and, while nasty and a total rat, was far from the worst person in that house that season.
  • Season 15 in general. With the racism, homophobia, misogyny and bullying, in combination with the passive gameplay, it was really disliked by the public. Or it is one of the stronger season in Big Brother, with its memorable moments, tolerable rigging, chilling downfalls, and a complex (albeit unlikable) cast that changes roles events by events (if you want a staggering example, watch how the roles of Elissa or Judd change from start to finish).
  • Season 16. Most people agree that the cast is a breath of fresh air after last season, in addition to better design in challenges and a great opening twist. But it's boring, mainly for unshocking eliminations, a dominant alliance that steamrolled the majority of the season and the Battle of the Block twist, which turned out to severely limit the eliminations of strong threats by giving them the chance to get off the block.
    • Among the contestants, Derrick. Although wildly considered to have the best game in the house, opinions are divided because of it. Is he a genius masterminding things while no one is the wiser? Or has he (and possibly Frankie) ruined the entire season by making the game exceptionally boring and predictable?
  • Vanessa of U.S. 17. Some fans think she's easily the most intelligent player in the game, getting out plenty of potential threats and practically going through every week without even being considered a target. Others think she's boring, wangsty, and a bully who abuses Johnny Mac and Steve.
    • Steve. People either think he's a brilliant strategist, a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing antisocial who hates Johnny Mac and purposefully got him out, a weasel and floater who has been riding Vanessa's coattails without making many big moves like evicting Vanessa, or the nicest of the final three and the last likable player since John was evicted.
    • Season 17 in general. Like Season 14 and 16 before it, it had a dominant alliance that steamrolled the competition, no one was brave enough to go after Austwins or Vanessa and the ones that tried to were quickly eliminated. Also, like BBC2, it had a very good gameplayer voted out at final 3 by a strong male competitor, someone they had underestimated and won in a landslide against a disliked female houseguest. Opinions are divided on whether or not the season was strategic enough and whether the winner deserved it.
  • Season 18's winner Nicole. Nicole, a veteran from Season 16, not only Took a Level in Jerkass but she intentionally targeted the other females in the house. So you have people torn on whether they liked her ruthless gameplay or not, and whether or not she deserved it over Paul, who was playing hard from Day 1.
  • In an ironic twist, you have Paul returning in Season 19, learning from experience that he can't be everyone's friend and is more than willing to take the full villainous route this time around (he even embraces the appearance of a snake just to get Dominique's goat) after treading around as an Anti-Hero. He drops all pretense of nice and begins playing meaner than ever, weaponizing his charisma to get everyone to rally to his corner and deliberately scheming his way to the top with some gambits, and blasting anybody who doesn't roll over for him. And it doesn't help that house is full of Paul lovers who are considered the most Genre Blind house since BB16.
  • Cody and Jessica of that same season. Either they are the most toxic houseguests ever due to being every conceivable form of hateful, be it politically incorrect down to petty, and got what they deserved when Paul rallied the house to give them a taste of their own medicine in force, or the most beloved villainous showmance who was Surrounded by Idiots and dealing with deep-seated personal issues and taking them out on the house.
  • Josh is one of the goofiest and silliest oddball houseguests the house has seen since Johnny Mac and easily one of the funniest with his antics keeping things lively, but his Hair-Trigger Temper leaves a lot to be desired. His adoration for kicking people while they are down and his irrational gameplay is also another issue, because either the recipient of his fury is an Asshole Victim, or Josh is being The Bully- and this almost led to Mark getting expelled for violence when he retaliated after being picked on unfairly one too many times. It helps that he drastically mellowed out once the two people who pissed him off most were kicked out of the house (Cody and Jessica), and that he and Mark patched up things after getting into fights with one another and the houseguests have learned to discipline Josh after growing tired of him picking fights. However, something has managed to make him much more favorable with the BB fan circuit near the end of the game- he is the ONLY person who recognizes the real threat Paul poses to his survival and actually wants to snipe out the big boss. Which he manages to do in a roundabout sorta way.
  • Season 19 has reached this status due to the fan consensus that Paul has poisoned the cast and taken over the show, some ugly conversations being tossed around about people's personal lives and the cast nearly incapable of recognizing Paul as the villain- and some of the cast are genuinely crazy.
  • Dear God, Omarossa Manigault Newman. Widely considered to be a shameless ratings ploy with her inclusion and a notorious Consummate Liar whose comments are always meant to stir shit up, many viewers expected her to steal the show, which she did... only to have it stolen back out from under her by Shannon Elizabeth Fadal and Ross Matthews. Also, Omarossa toned down her behavior since being on The Apprentice, where she got her infamous reputation as a monumental Alpha Bitch. It was additionally sympathetic to learn she had asthma and her standing in the house was equalized with the other players and not given any preferential treatment or free passes like Paul was. Rather, in a satisfying turn of events Omarossa's all-woman alliance shattered and she became the biggest target of the house, and saw elimination in fifth place.
  • The finale of Celebrity Big Brother 1 made some viewers rather confused when Marissa won over Ross, simply because Ross had played the game just like any well-versed superfan would but had all his cocky commentary out in the open because nobody went in sequester but straight home.
  • From Season 20, we have a few people.
    • JC, while he was bullied all his life for being short accidentally said the N word when he was trying to explain to Bayleigh about what the M word or F word meant to him. While many people (including former Black contestants) defended JC in saying he was only trying to get Bayleigh to realize the gravity of the words, others argue he really shouldn't have said the word in the first place. The ice cream scooper incident where he put it near his groin also offended viewers.
    • While Sam was originally The Woobie of 20, having got screwed by the robot twist and was barely saved by a flip, after becoming HoH she started showing an extremely catty side to her outright refusing to talk game with anyone even Tyler, who comforted her and Slut-Shaming Haleigh and Kaitlyn for cuddling up to the guys. While there are still people who consider her one of the nicer houseguests, others find her fake and hypocritical as she rarely talked to any of the ladies. Many of her naysayers consider her Nicole Franzel 2.0 for teaming up with the guys to get rid of the girls. The house itself is growing tired of her presence by the 70-day mark because she's become emotional and strung out with intermittent breakdowns.
    • Bayleigh and Swaggy C. While some found their romance charming and cute especially with their backstories, others found Bayleigh get a catty side when she became HoH similar to Sam but also with her constant usage of the M and F words after JC said they were offensive to him. As for Swaggy some people find him an amusing if a bit self centered person who likes to party with a tragic backstory while others found him easily one of the more grating houseguests and a douche who tried to be a big hammy alliance leader.
    • Tyler as well. While some find him entertaining and a ball of fun charismatic alliance leader who is pulling the strings from behind the scenes, others find him guilty by association for siding with people like Brett, Winston, Rachel and Angela all of whom have said some nasty things to other houseguests and not being with the "good" side of the house.
    • Angela really takes the cake as of the proceedings leading up to the fifth eviction night and her cocky goodbye message to Rachel, trashing an apparent friendship and revealing her true colors as one of the season's meanest players as she steps up to become a menace in the game after laying low prior to the Jury stage commencing. Some applaud her for stepping up and taking the game seriously, but many people are disgusted with her for trashing Rachel and acting like a pure bitch.
    • Rockstar rapidly became a divisive houseguest for expressing intensely liberal views on the live feeds. She frequently expresses strong stances on political and social issues, and also seems to let it influence who she's willing to vote for if she becomes a juror. Her constant breakdowns don't help her image, either, which got tiresome after a while. Her gross hygiene was another major contributor to her infamy.
    • Faysal and Haleigh. Faysal for being extremely stupid, petty, and Yandere over Haleigh, especially having become HoH and taking a third option rather than putting two Level Six members up, he puts one member of Level Six, and the only other person left who would even consider being his ally: Scottie of all people just because Haleigh "can't have male friends". This alone would make him a Scrappy but Haleigh kind of saves him from that (normally) being the brains to his brawn and genuinely hating most of his irrational decisions not unlike Caleb Reynolds. Haleigh herself, is also quite divisive for refusing the love of any guy that tries to flirt with her (she even said she's using Faysal to stay out of the crosshairs) including Tyler, Brett, and Faysal. Plus they have been seen by watchers (especially Faysal) as The Bore. All they do is sit around flirting with each other and complaining at each other, which gets VERY old.
    • Level Six as a group. Are they a well liked group of people who just happen to be against seemingly the worst alliance in BBUS history and wouldn't last if they had gone against a real alliance like The Brigade or The Detonators? A bunch of bullies and Jerk Jocks who deserve every attack by Zingbot they got? Paul and the Minions 2.0 making the season extremely boring because the winner is so obvious? Nice people that just play dirty? Even the polls can't seem to agree on what they are.
    • Season 20 in general. Is it a good season with blindside after blindside and no repeating HoH after the travesty of S19. A boring season where yet another dominant alliance steamrolls the competition? Or is it a combination of the two?
  • The winner of Big Brother Canada 1. Topaz meant to vote for Gary, but because she wasn't paying attention she thought they were voting to evict the final member, not for the person to win. Topaz votes for Jillian, Jillian wins, and everybody - fans and contestants alike- begin debating afterwards who the "real" winner is and what should happen (suggestions ranging from a revote, to simply Jillian handing the money or a portion of it to Gary). Gary, though, is fine with it, citing the previous sentences during the season where rule technicalities played a big part in the game and that the end result was still fair.
  • The winner of Big Brother Canada 4, Nicholas and Philippe Paquette seem to be very divisive if comments on Facebook are any indication. Tim was the favourite to win for sure, but many fans saw Nick and Phil as annoying and cringe-inducing having no real gameplay to speak of (only winning competitions when they had to, even losing the final Ho H which could have cost them the game). Unlike many examples though, while they aren't hated, per se, there is a vocal minority who threatened to stop watching all future seasons of Big Brother if Nick and Phil won, making them this.
  • Big Brother Canada 4 in general. Was it the best Canadian season thus far with the twist of the players from the UK and Australia giving the cast a good needed seasoning, or did Canada pick the two most annoying houseguests in Big Brother history who should have gone home immediately, but only stayed because of their standing with the house? There's also a camp who tolerates Nikki and Tim, but despises the other houseguests saying the season was only the least bit entertaining because of them, and if they weren't there, they would have quit watching weeks ago.
  • Canada 5's winner Kevin. There's no denying he played hard, but is he worthy of being placed next to players like Dan, Tim, and Will, or is he too much of an underdog to really count? Plus you have people saying Ika played a better game because she sided with a newbie and tried to get the other vets out. He's still generally a liked character though.
  • Nikki Graeme of BB UK. You will genuinely either love her or hate her because she is the biggest tantrum thrower ever. Her tantrums will either entertain far more than any contestant you've ever seen going nuts or cause migraines... or both. The UK certainly seemed to love her, as when she got evicted for the first time, she got one of the loudest ovations of the entire series, and this is a region which has no qualms about booing the people they openly despise as houseguests and readily campaigning to evict their scrappies. Even crazier— Nikki isn't putting on an act, she's literally this way in real life! Not convinced? Go watch her reality show, Princess Nikki. Yes, they actually made a show just to invoke more Nikki tantrums.

[up] Big Brother should be cutlisted since real life people can't be Base Breaking Characters.

Reality Shows are not Real Life for the purposes of troping and never have been.

I still think counting them as not real people is an excuse to trope real people. Sure, it's a grey area, since it's edited content, but we're still talking about real people. It's no different from troping reviewers, interviewers, interviewees, LPers, or anyone appearing on TV like not real people regardless of whether they have a stage persona.

Thanks for clearing that up, Septimus, feel free to restore the page. I think its up to the discretion of mods whether or not Reality Shows are able to be troped, as now I see it as most of the people in Big Brother don't actually act like jackasses in day to day activities meaning they play a character. Same thing with The Amazing Race and Survivor. I'm talking characters who seem like jerks like Russell Hantz are Mean Character, Nice Actor and it's not an excuse to trope real life people. Think of it like this, it's reality TV, but it's a gameshow, meaning it's very much like a movie or drama. I don't know if the same should apply to Magnificent Bastard as that trope was cut because they thought they were troping real life people and not people playing a character like a film.

YMMV.Re Creators has it bad.

" Base-Breaking Character:

Sota. You either see him as a complex character with his personal problems, experiences and a look at pop culture, or a very slow-witted coward, whose indecision is causing the people close to him to suffer and die. Still, this reception of him is much better than how he was originally received by viewers during the first few episodes before the The Reveal about his backstory, as a large portion of the fanbase saw him as either bland or useless (or both) for almost always being relegated to the background despite being billed as the main character and for being surrounded by way more interesting characters around him (both Creators and Creations). He also drew a lot of flak from the fans when he decided to withhold vital information on Altair from Celesia and Meteora before eventually being confronted about it when he got fleshed out more when his backstory was revealed.

Despite the fact that some viewers see Mamika as an obvious sacrificial lamb, she still gets enough sympathy and love from the audience and the authors. She even got her own "funeral ceremony" in real life.

Having only appeared in two episodes at the moment, Hikayu quickly became this for several viewers. While some viewers see it as a cheap attempt to make the show a reason for vulgar and ambiguous humor, others consider her appearance as a rather witty move that helps expand the show's appeal to various aspects of Japanese pop culture. See Replacement Scrappy on this page for more details.

Ohnishi. Quite a few fans see him as less of a character and more of the series creator making an attack on ecchi and H-game writers and their fans. Others think that it's entirely plausible that someone who makes Porn with Plot might not be the most upstanding person, and that he has more personality than the other Creators, who they consider bland.

While Meteora is generally liked, there are still some viewers who aren't totally won over by her, due to her exposition heavy dialog that goes practically unchallenged and her growing amount of power. She does manage to shake off some critics after the first six episodes, and moments like Episode 13 helped endear her to audiences."

[up] Cut Mamika and Meteora because they appear to be well-liked characters, with the latter's entry even mentioning that. Also, Hikayu's Replacement Scrappy entry may need to be cut if she's a Base-Breaking Character.

[up][up]

  • Sota's entry focuses a lot on arguments against him that were apparently discredited after only a few episodes had aired. Other than that, it depends on whether his cowardice and slow wits are meant to be endearing traits.
  • Mamika's entry gives only one negative trait, which doesn't seem to be that strong.
  • Hikayu's example is written as if it was added shortly after she was introduced, which doesn't leave enough time to tell whether the conflict is sustained or not. If she's still controversial, it still needs to be rewritten.
  • Ohnishi COULD be OK. I'm not familiar enough with the show to comment.
  • Meteora's entry only claims that she hasn't "totally won over" certain fans, indicating that she doesn't really have haters, just people who are indifferent.

Bringing up this example from Growing Around:

  • Base-Breaking Character: Anna would become this as a result of her personality. She's either liked for it, or disliked for coming off as annoying.
