Shuukan Shounen Hachi (from the author of Jitsu wa)

Yeah, in his previous series he thrived on Mood Whiplash, but this time around it seems more like he's trying to find a balance between the two rather than oscillating back and forth. It just took a few chapters to really zero in on it.

Chap 21: the geoglyph was a big success, everyone's panicking, Hoozuki does not take it well, there's a super sweet moment of chemistry, and Ran wants to climb that big, erect thing. By that I mean the tower. Probably. Boy, Shiho would be proud.

Also pretty cute that Handa talked to Ran with her own voice for the first time at the end.

Come on, dude, you don't get to be pissy when the only reason you didn't get a slice is because of your lousy attitude.

Hell, he is included in the praise, even though he didn't do shit… even less reason to complain… I guess he's just salty to be proven wrong.

A wild Fanservice appeared!

Chapter 22 is out.

"Say, Masuda-sensei, your manga's great and all, but how about we give a little fanservice to our readers? Like, a bath house episode, to show some naked skin!"
"…Oh yeah. Sure, I'll do that. "

Seriously though, it's nice to see Masuda show his chops in this domain (yeah, there were the Perverts in Jitsu wa, but… yeah. X) ). Inohara's just dangerous… also, I hate to admit it but goddammit Enma…

More seriously though, I liked that the chapter also advances the plot somewhat. Enma's comment to Tanuma that he shouldn't let others "drag him around" was probably point blank… If Tanuma denounced Enma's methods to the media though, how is that supposed to make him win the Like Battle?

Drama always draws attention. If his team's feed is linked to the controversy, they'll get tons of hits.

Well, sure, but if he gets kicked out or punished for that it won't do him much good. >.>

True. He might just have given up hope of actually advancing and just wants to torpedo the program.

Possibly… I mean, said program is completely assholish. Being told "nope, you're not good enough, bye bye" based on just one assignment − one that doesn't even depend on your artistic skill at that − is fucked up no matter what.

My guess is that the justification for it would be to frame it as not choosing who gets kicked out, but who gets a chance to stay. Like, they just say "Those in Class E are already doing so poorly that we could just kick them all out for not being up to our standards. This competition gives some of them the opportunity to prove that they deserve a second chance."

Of course, there's also the possibility that Enma is just B Sing and his real goal is to light a fire under the students to ferret out who actually has the drive to keep going and who's just going to give up.

I figure it must be something of the sort, but that would be predictable and Masuda doesn't do predictable. Can't really see what else it could be though. =[ Makes you wonder why they don't just do an entrance exam if they're gonna proceed this way…

On another note, I can't edit the trope page of the series, for some reason. Is it blocked or something?

Huh, it seems to be edit-locked. No idea why that would be; the edit history doesn't show anything. Maybe post in the locked pages thread to ask what the deal is. It might just be a bug related to the recent update.

Chap 23 will be a bit late on our side. Meanwhile, volume 1 and 2 are out, and it turns out chapter 4, 5 and 6 were tweaked a little − some of the monologues were changed, the scene where Saru remotivates Hachi was extended, and Enma is introduced a bit earlier looking at Hachi's storyboard with a smile.

Interesting. You guys going to reupload the compiled versions, or leave it as is?

Yeah, either a reupload, or we'll put the altered scenes with the omake (because yes, there are also omake :þ). We'll see, but we'll translate them either way.

Chapter 23 out. I have a feeling that Hoozuki might not be such a nice guy. I don't know if it's the constantly shadowed face or the creepy font, but it's subtle.

I did not expect to like Enma this much when he was introduced, but boy is this character growing on me.

Matsuda does seem to have a thing for taking characters and giving them depth from unusual angles. I'm curious exactly how his press conference is going to play out.

Also why Hoozuki is determined to tank his team.

Huh, the way he puts it, I suspect he doesn't want to tank his team so much as he wants to tank Hachi (who has to take 1st place to survive). But I'm not sure what his deal is other than that. If he's given up, why didn't just drop out at the end of the previous year?

On another note, next chap◊ preview.◊ Bonus points if you spot the Jitsu wa character in the first page.

Maybe he wants to fail in style. I dunno.

Also I feel like I should be able to pick the character out, but I'm not seeing anything clear.

Chapie out. Enma confirmed as the biggest troll of this series. Now either Onigahama will get droves of new candidates or angry townspeople with Torches and Pitchforks. Or both. I also wonder what rank Mikeya's dad is teaching. If it's the A rank, that must be awkward…

Well, it is a pretty niche series.

I actually can't read it now since I'm on vacation. Maybe later today.

I guess Champion is a pretty niche magazine nowadays… Beastars and Yowapeda are its biggest sellers and they don't even have a thread…

It also probably has to do with the fact that his previous series was also pretty niche, and this one is pretty different, so it might not have carried a lot of the audience over.

Maybe if we get it entries on more pages people will look into it more.

Chapter 25: building a Hate Sink 101. It's so damn satisfying to see Hoozuki's evil plan backfire so spectacularly. Him transitioning to his sob story immediately after making fun of a handicapped girl only makes him more hateable. No, you don't get to have an excuse for being an asshole of this magnitude.

I feel like Masuda should tone it down a little with the thick bubbles and creepy font though.
