Jack wiped the spit from his eye as he slowly shrunk in form. His face became wider, his lip started sprouting hair, and his hair became stark black. His clothes transformed into a beige suit with a swastika armband.

“You are foolish! You have failed our people and the Reich. This plan of yours? Scheisse! Do you think that if this war of theirs happens, they will leave us be?!” Fuhrer Jack said reaching back and smacking the man as hard as he spoke. “You will go forth with what they wish, and bring some honor back to the Reich; or you may as well not return!”

Fuhrer Jack smacked him once again for good measure.

"But, but Fuhrer!" said the Commander. "You said that you wanted this war! Once you make an order, you never go back on it! To do otherwise would be to disgrace the Reich itself! You cannot be telling me to disgrace the Reich! Please tell me you are not!"

Fuhrer Jack glared down at the man. "No. I never said that. Whoever it was that told you such a plan is a fool and will be dealt with properly." He said and looked at the man, trying to pass the hardness in his eyes off as sympathy. "I understand, mein friend. You simply wanted to help the homeland. But I'm afraid you've doomed us all. If you do not take your punishment now, we are all truly doomed. Do not let the child dishonor us so."

Jack then nodded to the man and squeezed his shoulder again, this time feigning comfort instead of fury. "It's the only way."

The man began to sob, tears streaming down his face like a flood as he began to realize the awful truth. "Yes. Yes, I have failed. I must take my punishment. It is the only way."

He then reached for a knife at his side. In the blink of an eye, he whipped it out, held it to his neck, and slit his throat. And he dropped dead on the ground.

The third cat glared at Sam. "Well?"

"Hold on!" said Jezebel. "You're not just gonna let him do this, are you?! I know what's it like to go through this shit! And it ain't fun!"

"Believe me," said Jasmine, "I know how you feel. But we don't have much choice." She pulled out her lute, getting ready to play another tune. She called out to Sam. "Hey! Keep your ears open! Lest you wanna start having a taste for catnip!" She started to play. It was a soothing, blissful tune like a soft serenade. Not that it stopped what was to come.

Sam doubled over, almost sick to his stomach. He could feel his muscles starting to tense, becoming stronger and tougher if not necessarily bulkier. His build was actually becoming sleeker and more athletic, well suited for scaling walls or leaping across long distances. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. His skin was covered with goosebumps as thick white fur started to grow out of it, covering his body from head to toe. His legs became hocked as his fingernails turned into long claws, gleaming in the moonlight. A long tail shot out through his rear, ripping the back of his pants as it swished to and fro with ease. His face formed into a muzzle, and his teeth grew into sharp, fierce fangs. His ears rose closer to the top of his head and became noticeably more pointed as a pair of whiskers grew around his triangular snout. And his eyes were as sharp as a sabretooth's. He growled, his new instincts coming to the fore, even as Jasmine's song kept the rest of his mind intact.

"Well, well," said the second cat person. "Not bad. More importantly, the debt has been paid. Blood for blood. Our blood is now yours. As long as he remains like this, no harm shall come to you or the rest of your kind. As long as nothing such as this happens again."

"It had better not," said Flora. Her eyes were always somewhat cold, but in this moment, they were as sharp as a thorn. "You just had one of my students give up his humanity for some outdated custom that should have been outlawed ages ago. The only reason I didn't lift a finger is because I didn't want to cause any more unnecessary bloodshed. But mark my words. If anything such as this happens again, there will be a reckoning."

"If you say so. But for now, this will do. Though I would suggest leaving the forest as quickly as possible. The debt may have been paid, but some of us may still be somewhat on edge." She turned to Sam. "But as he is now, he is welcome any time."

"I cannot imagine that offer is necessary, Samuel," Mahvash pulled Samuel to his feet, albeit leaving him to steady himself while she watched. She didn't really know what he would do. "If you need time or rest, you can make the return trip on my wagon."

She paid the cat-people no further attention beyond slight awareness of their babbling. This did not 'balance' things, if I even liked that obsession with balance in the first place, but we have to deal with the actual problem. Don't know if there are more interdimensional fanatics around. Plus Samuel needs to adjust. This special lot comes later. Still, don't want to give myself a reputation for letting insults go unavenged. Then again, if Class 1 isn't my problem, their fate probably doesn't impact me anyway.

Mahvash gave Mikael a sideways glance. "You too, Red Hot. Just in case you have something to discuss. I don't know at what age you normally learn to kill, but you all seemed fresh faced to me when you first arrived in class."

Mikael merely stared at the now-transformed Sam with something like sadness in her eyes. She shifted back to a male form, now that she was free of the dome, and he sighed at Matten's comment. "Saw the corpse, did you? Well, I don't feel conflicted about it. I've killed a lot of animals," Here he cast a glare at the catfolk, "and as far as I'm concerned killing a Nazi was far more justifiable. Especially one that was trying to kill me. Or worse."

He offered a clawed hand to Sam. "I should still be able to warp back to camp - or to the dorms since I doubt we'll be staying in these woods after this debacle - so if you need to lay down after your transformation, I can take you if you wish."

Sam's mind was reeling as he transformed, with everything around him starting to freeze. With a glare, a path of cold and snow was formed, stopping just short of any cat people. But the temperature around them was suddenly, quickly dropped. Then, it stopped, things went back to normal.

"There, happy?" He snarled, his voice sounding rougher, and there was a rage no one ever heard before "Take this as a warning for the next time you even think of threatening us" A strong blizzard blew, and just like that, he was gone.

Tonight, a cat left the forest.

Deep Forest Expedition, Outside the Dome

Mahvash grimaced at Sam's departure, brushing snow off her shoulder, arm, and a good part of her torso. "Superb timing for that fire in your gut, Snow-Bunny." Undignified, impotent threats is a trait of the people you're supposed to stomp on. Flora's rage came a tad late as well. The fae-cats had little reason to believe that Class 1 wouldn't fold again, and this display was just petty.

"They 'won' this confrontation, Banu Flora." And really gained nothing really. They just deprived another of his body. The daeva shrugged at the teacher. "Meh. More importantly, Samuel prevented the enemy's unwitting pawns from gleefully aiding the people who killed their leader. We'd do better to give Samuel attention and some reward if you have any."

In accordance with her own statement, she never even glanced at the cat-people, instead eyeing Mikael next. "You don't have to justify anything to me. Fire to the apparently unprotected head. Decisive and effective. I remind you that Saint and Interceptor gave their first lesson—with all that implies—on preserving lives, and you lot are vastly different from me."

The daeva looked over the body with the broiled head. Well, I got the blood from that corpse already. Rienbach can study the rest of the body and whatever 'enhancements' he tried on himself in more depth. I'll explore my golem idea with something else.

"Should we leave the injured in the care of Banu Titania?" Mahvash asked Flora, suddenly reminded of the 'lab'. "And for that matter what to do with the enemies from the dome?"

Suddenly Quetzy took a deep breath. She calmed herself, her wings fluttering like a gentle breeze as if order has been restored. "Whew! Things normal again! Mostly." She turned to Remix. "Now we save friends! Come! Quetzy show you way! She began to slither off, the goatman hopping behind her, with every expectation that Remix would follow.

Dome — The Back

Hei's shadowy doppelganger had been searching the Dome for what felt like days, but as they reached the back room, they finally found what they were looking for. Scores of mutates were crammed into dense steel cages like animals, growling and howling for release. A release that had yet to come.

Deep Forest

"Titania can take care of the Forest Dwellers," said Flora, " but I wouldn't trust her with anything else. No doubt she'd turn our enemies into her playthings. Which normally I wouldn't have a problem with, but we need at least some of them for further interogation. If they still know something, I want to know what. Though I suppose we don't need all of them."

"You people are giving me mixed signals," Mahvash tlted her head at Flora's answer before throwing up her hands. "If condemning one's enemies to Baleful Polymorph does not offend Saint's sense of heroism, I will do so directly. That certainly resolves the prisoner thing. And I bet Class 1 would be satisfied to have a hand in the process instead of contracting out."

Not killing, polymorph an acceptable heroic option, and something 'inspiring'. Well, going by what Laurie said then the glamour caused the most unease with the whole Elim thing, and my latest, Clarissa has her mind. And has it with better clarity than ever before. On the other hand, Laurie did say something about dignity though, if she wasn't just playing on my ignorance of things back then.

"I'll think about it," the daeva finally said after curling her fingers around her chin. "In the meantime," she tuned into the howls in the dome as they were. An accident, as she had actually been partly scanning for enemies, mostly checking to be sure that Remix a) had a living aura; and b) was not currently saying prayers in fear. "And apparently, we missed some people."

Deep Forest Expedition, The Back

Mahvash had left the bulk of the golden armor arranged as was, with the body of the fallen one, taking only a section as a sample for Rienbach and very deliberately folded space around herself to warp ring only a short distance past the hangar. She'd left that mess with Hei Lin and Lucy and Mikael and whoever. Did not serve her well to dwell on it. Still, she made of point of running and warp-skipping around obstacles only when necessary. Practice.

The daeva spent no time staring at the cages on her arrival. Why make them wait for release after she had arrived? To that point, she sent tendrils of unmaking essence along the walls of the cages, carefully. Not for risk of booby traps, but injuring her charges—however temporary, would be uncouth. "I'm just assuming that you all have your wits about you and aren't eager to kill me;" she paused a second tilting her head and shrugging. "though I'm not always right on that point. I shall lead you out of here, and we'll discuss your health and future plans on the way."

As soon as Matten's tendrils finished dissolving the cages, the mutates' roars and grunts ceased. And then they saw their chance. They charged out of the room in a mighty stampede, barely noticing Matten as she was caught up in their wake.

"FREEDOM! FREEDOM!"

Deep Forest

"Well," said Flora, "I suppose we'd best be getting back. Though I suppose I'd better make a phone call." She reached into a small bag tied around her waist and pulled out a bright green cellphone. One never knew when something would come up. "Let's just hope we still have reception." She opened it up and made the call. Hopefully he was in a good mood. "Saint? Yes, I'm doing swimmingly. Unfortunately, most everyone else is not. We need to talk."

And talk they did.

Saint Academy Rooftop

Sam was brooding. This much was evident. He was sitting on the edge of the rooftop, hunched over and looming over all like the creature he now resembled. What was going through his head was anyone's guess, but chances were it wasn't anything pretty.

"Careful now. Cats don't always land on their feet." Saint stood on the center of the rooftop. He was holding his cellphone in his hand. He was still wearing his suit, not that he had any time to change after Flora made the call. He walked over to Sam, coming just short of putting a hand on his shoulder before thinking otherwise. After all, he didn't want to lose a digit.

"I heard about what happened from Flora. And I just want to say I am sorry. Not that it means a whole lot. Normally, this would be the part where I'd say we'd do everything in our power to get you back to normal or at least try. But I think we both know that isn't going to happen. The only reason we aren't in the middle of a bloodbath is because you turned yourself into one of them. As long as they think we're to blame, there isn't much we can do."

He stepped forward towards the edge of the roof. The sun was as red as embers as it sank into the Earth, and Saint couldn't help but admire its' beauty. "For what it's worth, what you did was commendable. I'm not even sure Interceptor would have had the guts to step in there. But at the end of the day, sometimes we make mistakes. And sometimes the only thing we can do is own up to them. For better or worse. Which is part of what being a hero's all about."

It would be hard for Sam to tell how he left the forest. Maybe he ran, maybe he flew. But in either case, he ended up on the roof. A mix of rage, guilt and sadness spun around and around in his mind as he looked down the floor below. He messed up. That much was obvious. And he had to toss away his humanity to fix it. What is he supposed to do now?

Those thoughts kept repeating in his mind when Saint got to the roof. But he could only nod sadly at what he was saying. Until the cats stop being idiots, he'll be stuck like this.

Saint's next words did cause a reaction, a quiet sob came out of the boy, who started curling into a ball. For today, the wall of ice in him broke.

"Ahahahaha!" A few moments of giggling like a little girl later, Mahvash remembered that traumatized mutants were making a mad rush in any direction. Well, who doesn't love a good game of being tossed around like this? She'd clung to one randomly—after feeling four or six dozen pinball her around the room—and the big guy was not the biggest guy. She couldn't see quite where they were going.

And they don't seem to be in a talkative mood. Let's go path of least resistance! The daeva made no attempt to steer or direct the stampede, merely blocking a path here with rubble and opening one there with lesser ruination. That and steadily nicking the crowd for samples of blood. If I'm not about to calm then down before they run in some random direction, then I can collect them after they wear out. There's alot of aftermath to deal with with this trip.

Saint Academy — One Week Later

After the near disaster that was the Saint Academy trip and all the clean up that was involved, things were considerably less frantic in the week that followed. SA continued to do their best to make sure their students were prepared for what was out there. From learning how to disable a giant death ray to how not to have all the hostages in a bank heist horribly killed, it was business as usual at SA.

That said, one uneventful week wasn't enough to calm everyone's nerves. The events of those first few weeks still hung over everyone's heads. Some more than others. Even their therapist had been driven half-insane as a result. There were rumors that it was only a matter of time before she put on a jester suit and started parading around the school like some sort of deviant. Something had to give. It was time for a change of pace. Time for something fun. And so, not two days after Class 1 came back from the camping trip, a very special event was announced: 'Meet the Parents'. It was bound to happen sooner or later, but for one reason or another, it was happening now. And as Class 1 emerged from their last class of the day, they knew that tonight was the night.

With any luck, their parents wouldn't try to sue.

Mikael snapped at Remix, absentmindedly cleaning his nails with his thumbclaw and trying to look aloof. "And my Opa, who at this point is arguably worse. "At least you have parents." Evergreen stood in the back of the class, almost as stiff as an actual tree untill Remix opened his big mouth. "Some of us aren't so lucky." She contemplated just porting her consciousness away to another body like Flora taught her, but she supposed marching out of the classroom was as good as anything. And she did just that.

She began heading over to Flora's greenhouse. The two of them had spent quite a bit of time together over the last week. Between helping out in the garden, experimenting with new fauna, and exploring the green, it may as well have been her second home. So much so that some of Flora was starting to rub off on her. Her wardrobe had been reduced to a tanktop and a pair of hotpants, all leaf green, and her leafy hair was reaching down to her rear. If this kept up, her hair might not have been the only thing made out of leaves.

And yet, something was holding her back. Part of her still wanted to be human. Or at least pass herself off as one. After all, that was what her handlers wanted, wasn't it? If she had anything close to a parent, it was them. If they wanted her to behave like something she wasn't, then that was what she would do.

But was it truly what she wanted?

Whatever. Gardening was about to start and Ever didn't want to mess it. Besides, her handlers were supposed to be showing up tonight. She could ask them anything she wanted then. Assuming they'd be willing to answer.

Halls, Outside Classroom

"I know!" Mahvash leaned against the wall outside the classroom, pumping a fist in the air that the folks couldn't have seen even had she been doing 'facetime'. And of course she knew her parents were coming, but the family always caught up like this. Except when the folks had to lay low for some silly thing or another. Still did not make their visit any less worthwhile. Besides, they could skip the small talk when they met face to face. "Just don't miss me. Salutations and regards!"

"♪Come watch your daughters and sons excel♪," The daeva locked her fingers above her head and did a twirl before skipping around the hall, quite literally unrolling a red carpet in her wake. "♪Call it assurance that you did well. Behold! The first daughter weds heaven and hell...♪ Remix may need to write a new jingle. Nah, I like it!" She had enough carpet for the halls—yes, all of them, and hopefully the demons would not tred too heavily on it.

Well, the daeva put far more focus than necessary into lining up flowers, sticking out from everyone's lockers. The intangibles are still ...confusing, but being around such a bunch has put me on the fast track! A speck of light crackled in her presence, something Mikael might recognize should he get past the sickly glow, . What darling parents they must have.''

It's nice that your parents care to visit once in awhile Hei thought to himself as he listened to the students discuss their parents coming to visit. He didn't even know if his mother would bother to appear in his life after her first (and only) visit during the start of school. As for his other family...

"...really appreciate it old man, but you don't have to force yourself to come to a Hero school just to see me. I can visit, ya know?" Hei spoke into his phone, chuckling as a gruff voice said something in reply. "Alright, if you insist. So Lady Kagami's joining you...uhuh...wait, you'll send a list? That doesn't fill me with confidence." More chatter came through, and Hei sighed. "Fine,.. I'll take a look. Stay safe old man." He hung up just as his phone lit up displaying a text message. Hei tapped the icon and began reading the names listed in it.

Classroom - Timeskip

Lucy, like Hei, had received a call just a little after class, but to her concern only Hannah and Jane were actually on the line. She hadn't heard any word from, or indeed even any mention of David.

When she had asked if he was coming, there was an uncomfortable pause, followed by a clipped 'Yes'.

She knew it. She shouldn't have put off calling for this long. She thought that once every now and then would be enough, but no. Over the course of two and a half weeks she had fought a hardlight Godzilla, got caught up in a cross-dimensional catastrophe at the forbidden pool, turned into a giant mass of ink in the cafeteria, had to witness the boy she had a crush on get turned into a girl, had to then be roommates with said boy (how the hell had she even survived that?), found out she had DID, fought in the Arena and lost in an act, got mixed up with her own alters, confessed to Hei, for some reason didn't kiss him until after the Arena Event, and then there was a whole cluster that happened in the forest.

One of which was hit a low point.

She didn't like to think about that. She was disgusted with herself for doing that.

But in the process of recovery and leaving the dome, she had discovered something. Something forgotten, tucked away on a crate, presumably being looked over by one of the Nazis before the dome was infiltrated.

It was a datapad. More specifically, it was a datapad on the Livingstons, although she had no idea how they had gathered so much information. She could remember waiting until they had come back to the dorms, exhausted, purposefully pretended to be asleep until Hei drifted off so she could get a glimpse of what was on the pad. She was that desperate to know.

This was what she had found.

Livingston Willpower:

An anomalous phenomenon defined primarily by the presence of abnormally potent reality-bending tenacity in the descendants of the late Bahram Sardar, who was fused with the energies of the artifact known as the Amulet of Anwaar. The willpower remains latent unless tapped into, and when it reaches an initial peak (usually triggered by high stress) it violently floods outwards, manifesting superhuman abilities in the subject based off of their desires, habits, personality, or obsessions. The willpower then settles back into a suppressed state, although sufficient amounts of stress may reawaken it and temporarily grant the user incredible mastery over their supernatural abilities. Despite being called 'Livingston Willpower' the phenomenon is present in all of Bahram's descendants, including branching families otherwise unrelated to his direct offspring. The power can also be partially transferred via mental infiltration, allowing for artificial superhuman production with results of varying success. Due to the abnormal potency, the effects of overusing Livingston Willpower can be anything from immense fatigue, physical or mental degradation, or even death.

She was so flooded with wonder and mild confusion that it had taken her several rereads to even grasp what it was implying. Several rereads over the course of a few days. She didn't even think she got to tell anyone about her find yet, she had been so focused on understanding the damn thing in the first place.

Plus, Lucy had no idea who this 'Bahram Sardar' was, but she was sure maybe Dr. Bozo had something on him. The name sounded somewhat Persian, too, then maybe Matten would know.

If she could bring herself to ask her after what had happened in the dome.

Enough of that. Whatever the case, this was a huge help. Even if there were still a few missing pieces, she now had a solid idea of what was going on with her.

Inkwell wasn't real.

The Entity wasn't real.

They were just figments. Constructs by herself. The result of poor circumstance and a too-potent determination attempting to follow through, no matter the detriment to herself. It had cost her mind's wholeness, but now...

Now she felt she was starting to put it back together.

Dragging herself out of her thoughts and back into the present, she sidled up next to Hei once his call ended. Whenever they weren't in an immediately dangerous situation, her shyness tended to resurface, although at this point she was starting to be used to it rather than get irritated by it.

“U-Um... my mom, sister, and brother are coming. And erm... they kinda don't know yet...? About... us, I mean?” she practically squeaked in embarrassment at the thought of the sheer awkwardness this would cause. ”I-I'm sorry, I guess I kinda got caught up in things, and... well... oh god this'll be awkward...” she groaned, slumping slightly into his shoulder. Hannah she knew would be ecstatic, but it was her mother and David that she was worried about. The former depended on her mood, but the latter...

From how he was barely mentioned, she was rather wary.

Everyone's parents arriving inspired some slightly unpleasant feelings in Caleb, though he clearly wasn't alone in that.

"Not to bring the mood down but I'm pretty sure I'm either still a missing person or my folks think I'm dead, so..."

Strictly speaking this was part of Ace's role but he was kind of a deadbeat mentor so that was more trouble than it would be worth. Though if he could get past the cringe it could be fun to watch him embarrass himself.
