Duplicate tropes discussion thread

Go To

A thread discussing similar tropes.

Note that two tropes being distinct in theory does that mean they are distinct in practice. If participants agree that two (or more) tropes really don't seem distinct enough to be separate, one can start a thread in the Trope Repair Shop for further discussion. A a wick check demonstrating redundancy will likely be required, though.

Before asking "What's the difference between these tropes?", check the Canonical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions and Laconical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions lists. They may contain the answer. Feel free to contribute to them, too.

    Original OP

I've decided to start a new cleanup thread dealing with trope similarities. This thread is for discussing tropes that appear to be a duplicate of another trope, and if it's agreed upon that the two tropes talked about are similar enough, one should start a thread about it in the Trope Repair Shop.

I'll start with my issue...

Asian Hooker Stereotype and Mighty Whitey and Mellow Yellow are pretty much the same trope—they both involve a white man and an Asian woman.

The idea seems to be that having (a) threesome(s) is an indication of being sexually charismatic and/or adventurous. Situations like "attempting to have a threesome to spice up your sex life but wind up backing out because it's awkward" follow that idea.

What's the difference between Fandom Nod and Ascended Fanon?

I've noticed the former is not even mentioned in the latter's description.

I think Fandom Nod is for any reference to the fandom, including meta aspects like a Fan Community Nickname, while Ascended Fanon is for Fanon ideas that become canon in the text. So I think the latter could be a subtrope but the former's trivia for some reason (maybe for the meta reasons).

I think that Slow Doors is superfluous. In itself, a door that takes a lot of time to close is chairs. The trope description makes it seems about a door closing slowly giving time for someone to pass it at the last second, but that part is covered by Indy Hat Roll. Then there is the real life section of the examples, which just lists slow doors.

I think Insurmountable Waist-Height Fence and Gravity Barrier overlap a lot more than they probably should, due to the former's description trying to pull in all conceivable means to the same end.

[up][up][up] Um ok then, for the record I had found an ADC example that felt like misuse of Genius Bonus cuz it was simply referencing an Hispanic fan made parody but I wasn't sure where to move it, guess that I'll move it to Fandom Nod then since it feels like it's just a reference.

I don't think Hopeless with Tech and Walking Techbane need separate pages. It's just that one is a destructive exaggerate form.

I don't think they are similar nor mutually exclusive, one is someone who doesn't understand technology due to generational gap, and the other is someone who breaks anything they touch.

Generational gap isn't a required part of Hopeless with Tech. It's being bad with technology in general. Walking Techbane is treated as extreme of trope as written in the compare/contrast section of Hopeless with Tech.

I think there's a difference between someone who is genuinely clueless about how to use technology (Hopeless with Tech) and someone whose very presence harms surrounding technology, either due to cluelessness, clumsiness, or having actual powers that causes technology to break around them.

Weapons-Grade Vocabulary: Words that literally injure people when heard or read.

Harsh Word Impact: Something upsetting or insulting a character says to another is shown injuring them as a visual metaphor.

Devastating Remark: Something a character says to another causes them to have a Heroic BSoD or some other kind of breakdown.

Yes, as far as I can tell, Mana Drain is a subtrope (where the character absorbs the enemy's magic power).

EDIT: Fixed an awful typo.

Immortal Iconic Car and Invincible Classic Car seem suspiciously similar, if not fully in content, then at least by name, maybe needs some work?

[up]The tropes are quite distinct, the similarity of the names is the only problem that I see.

And taking one of them to Trope Repair Shop (heh, I like the automotive flavour of the name in this case) for a rename would be a non-starter unless you could prove that the name is causing problems.

Domed Hometown should be a Subtrope to Citadel City, right?

Asking this because neither are mentioned in each other's pages

[up] Yes. Wingdinglish requires the alien language to be based on English, and Artificial Script requires the author to have come up with the script.
