Okay, so I have a new pet project. It's a Magical Land story, but with a twist: the Magical Land isn't exactly a typical magicalland. Sure, it has magic and magical creatures, but, whereas most magical lands are wondrous, beautiful worlds where our Kid Hero can come, destroy the evil plaguing its inhabitants (returning it to Arcadia status in the process), and return to their own world, my Magical Land is... well, it's beautiful and sometimes wondrous, but it's also a mixture of Überwald and Campbell Country, swarming with Werewolves, Vampires, and Eldritch Abominations. Arcadia would be nigh-unachievable in this world, and a Kid Hero would be lucky if they were able to survive their first night in this world.

Other ways in which it is different from the typical Magical Land include:

  • It is old. Really old. It does have Narnia Time, but even with Narnia Time taken into account, it has been around longer than our world, and it shows.
  • It's also bigger than our world.
  • Its primarily populated by humans, and has been for the last few thousand years. Population density is pretty low, and there are few cities (due to the size of this world), but there are general regions that have been (poorly) mapped, and a few nation-ish entities maintain loose control over (relatively) small areas.

Random facts about the world in general:

  • There are no oceans in this world. The world is comprised almost entirely of forests, swamps, and mountains, with scattered human settlements and ruins left over from Advanced Ancient Human civilizations. This is explicitly because of magical reasons.
  • Though most of the modern human population is comprised of people from various time periods and areas who became Trapped in Another World (or, for some reason, had an opportunity to leave but decided to stay), It does have a native human ethnicity. Called "Gaunts", they are Eerie Pale Skinned Brunettes with very large eyes and small noses. Although they might technically be considered white (or "Caucasian" if you must), they could also be considered a different ethnicity due to their different origins, the differences listed above, and other, less prominent differences.
  • A large theme in this world's history is the Rise, Golden Age, Decadence, and Fall of various civilizations of Advanced Ancient Humans (known a "Great Civilizations"), with centuries or even eons separating one Great Civilization from another. Once a civilization becomes a Great Civilization, they develop innate knacks related to things their civilization was good at (such as an affinity for machines or great mental fortitude against Eldritch Abominations). After these civilizations fall, the knacks are mostly lost as the descendants of the civilization interbreed with those without the knacks and forget about their origin and their legacy, but there are inevitably a few (usually isolated and/or xenophobic) groups who maintain their knacks, such as the tinkermen or the bog folk.
  • Most people live in groups (usually towns if everyday folk or isolated enclaves if people who retain knacks). If you meet someone who lives alone, they are either A: Incredibly stupid; B: Incredibly wise; or C: Incredibly nuts. Unless A is the case, they are are also almost always incredibly dangerous. Try and avoid them either way.

Anyways, that's most of it that I've developed so far. any questions/advice/comments/ideas? I appreciate feedback.

This world seems quite interesting. Not my cup of tea, but still Interesting...

  • It seems brilliant so far. Who is the unfotunate? hero in this story.
  • I get the feeling the Lovecraftian stuff is mostely there for the occasional minor "decoration", am I right?.
  • Don't so much get a feel of Überwald + Lovecraftian stuff about this as Überwald and Folkloric stuff. Some Folkloric critters can be both cool & creepy...

I would love to hear more

[up] Thanks for the feedback!

  • The hero is rather unfortunate. He/she is a high school/college student who is unfortunate enough to open that weird closet in his/her creepy new house at midnight during a lunar eclipse during one of the more "powerful" times of the year and gets sucked in. He/she survives mostly by luck until he/she finds a relatively safe town. I haven't fleshed the story out much beyond that.
  • Partially. The Lovecraftian stuff is much less noticeable, but it's definitely there, in the crannies and corners so dark that even vampires and black magician subconsciously avoid them. They are old, far older than even the first gaunts and possibly as old or older than the world itself. Though their time has passed, it will come again, but they don't care enough to hurry it along. When you've lived for eons upon eons and operate upon a system of morality so alien that even getting a fraction of their perspective would drive a human insane, you can afford to wait a few million or even billion years more... usually.
  • That is mostly my fault, I didn't put enough influence on the Campbell Country part of it. See the above bullet point.
I will update periodically if you're interested, but don't have that much time at the moment.

Umm... so, I was here, I guess. If I wasn't, someone hacked my account. So, yeah.

Your Campbell Country that is seasoned with Überwald actually sounds a lot like a lot of Folklore / Mythology taken up to 11. There are, as I said in the earlier post, loads of creepy and wierd things and places that show up in mythologies and folklores from all around the world... Search the old legends and you will find lots of critters and places that would have been right at home in Überwald. The same is even true for some Lovecrafian-esque stuff. That kind of stuff pop up in the legends too...

For example: Did you know that the word Eldricht originaly meant "Fairyland"? And given what we know about The Fair Folk ...

Poor hero. It would be fun to hear more about the poor chap...
